INEQUALITIES

There are four types of inequality : (i)  (ii) > (iii)  (iv) <

Properties: vi. If a > b > 0 then

(a) for n > 0 an > b n
i. If a > b & b > c then a > c (b) for n < 0 an < b n

ii. If a > b then a  k  b  k  k  R vii. If a > 1 then an  1  an  0 ; n  0

iii. If a > b & c > d then a + c > b + d viii. If 1 > a > 0 then an  1  an  0 ; n  0

iv. If a > b then ix. If a > b then a2n + 1 > b2n +1

; n N
(a) for k > 0 ka > kb
(b) for k < 0 ka < kb
x. If a x  a y then
(a) for a > 1 x>y
v. If a > b > 0 & c > d > 0 then ac > bd
(b) for 1 > a > 0 x<y

INTERVALS

Definition: Interval are the subset of real numbers.

There are four types of Intervals:

I. Closed Interval: III. Semi-closed, Semi-open Interval:

If a  x  b then we write x  [a, b] If a  x  b then we write x  [a, b)

a b a b

II. Open Interval: IV. Semi-open, Semi-closed Interval:

If a < x < b then we write x  (a, b) If a  x  b then we write x  (a, b]

a b a b

(No common factor in Numerator & Denominator)

Steps to solve:

i. Neglect all the even powered brackets.

(But note down the value of x corresponding to that bracket)

ii. Now make coefficient of x, positive in the remaining odd powered bracket.

iii. Draw number line and plot (a, b, c etc) corresponding to odd powered bracket, & put (+)
sign on right of the largest number & alternate +, – sign from right to left & draw curve.

– + – +
a b c

.
iv. Answer positive interval or negative interval according to  0 or  0

v. In case of  0 or  0 , include the value of x where Numerator is 0, & also exclude all those
x where Denominator is 0.

LOGARITHM MATHS
x  0
y  loga x where  ; a = base of logarithm, x = domain (input of logarithm)
a  0, a  1

Definition: Logarithm of positive number is defined as “Index y of that power of a, which equal x.”

i.e. ay  x which can be written as y  loga x

Example:
y  log2 64 is equivalent to 64  2 y which is clearly y = 6
So value of y  log2 64 = 6

Log and Anti-log:

antilog
1. ay  x 
log
y  loga x 2. y  loga x   ay  x

Points about base (a):

1. If a = 10 (i.e.) y  log10 x then log is called common logarithm.

2. If a = “e” (Natural base, e = 2.718) then log is called Natural logarithm.

y  loge x is written as y  ln x .
