Located at Grand Central Airport, LFC has a dedicated approved AMO maintenance operation at FALA and
operates, C172s, C172RG, Cessna 182, Beechcraft Duchess and Piper Seneca, King Air, Flight Simulator
Training Devices and the desire to deliver the highest quality products and services to the industry. Grand
Central Airport has 2 runways, and has easy access to ILS, VOR, NDB and DME approaches plus approach
lighting. The airport and its environment is perfect for training.

Controlled airspace provides the student with an excellent grounding in procedures and enables them to cope in
any situation and not be intimidated by heavy traffic. Grand Central Airport is conveniently located between
Johannesburg and Pretoria and experiences very few delays on departure and arrival giving the student more
flying time per lesson. The flight training area is in close proximity to the airport (10 minutes from the airport).
This allows the student to spend more time flying and practicing the exercises rather than transiting from one
airspace to another.

LFC train from ab-initio to ATPL. Whether you want to fly for pleasure with a Private Pilot’s Licence, or open a
lifetime of opportunities with a career in commercial aviation, we can guide you through an approved course of
comprehensive practical and theory training.

Lanseria Flight Centre has graduates who now fly for many large airlines and corporate operators throughout the
world. Some of these include: SAA, SA Airlink, Flysafair, British Airways, Qantas, Emirates, Cathay, Gulf Air, Aer
Lingus, Air Mauritius, Execujet and many more.

We are focused on achieving the aspirations of our customers in a friendly and professional atmosphere.

What is a Commercial Pilot Licence?

The commercial licence allows you to work as a professional pilot and be remunerated for flying. As part of the
commercial licence you will gain an instrument rating allowing you to operate under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules)
in IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions). With a commercial licence you will be eligible for employment
with any commercial operation such as charter flying, contract flying, corporate flying, survey flying, agricultural
flying, flight instruction and airline flying.

What does the training involve?

To obtain a Commercial licence with an instrument rating you need to be the holder of a South African Private
Pilot Licence (PPL), obtain a Class-One Aviation Medical and be no less than 18 years of age. Should you not
have a PPL then the first step would be to get one (please ask our staff for more information on this licence).
The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) requires a total flight time of 200 hours and applicants must have passed the
10 theoretical examinations which can be written locally at the CAA headquarters.
The minimum 200 hours total time is to be broken down into the following:

 100 hours pilot in command (PIC)

 50 hours cross country time as PIC (One flight must be at least 300nm)
 10 hours of night flying as PIC (One flight must be at least 100nm)
 40 hours of instrument flying of which no more than 20 hours may be done on a CAA approved
simulator.
 Must be the holder of a General Radio Licence.

The hours accumulated doing your PPL do count towards the 200 hours needed. The flight school will plan your
flying with you to assist you in finishing your commercial licence on 200 hours and ensuring that you have
complied with the above flight training objectives. If you have already done some flying our staff will sit down
with you and work out what still needs to be done and in what order.
The sequence of your training will typically be as follows:

1. Complete your PPL

2. Once the PPL is completed, the night rating should be started. This rating will allow you to fly at night in
VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions). A night rating will require 15 hours of flight training, which
includes 10 hours of instrument instruction (which count towards your instrument rating) and 5 hours of
night flying.

3. Now that you have a PPL and a night rating you need to start building up hours and accumulate the 100
hours PIC required for the Commercial licence. It is during those hours that you will fly cross country,
mostly during daytime (50 hours required) but some should be at night (10 hours required), all of which

2
must be flown as pilot in command. In order to get the maximum benefit from these hours, the flight
school will advise you on where you can go.

4. Once you have a total time of 170 hours the instrument rating should be started. You should by then
have 100 hours PIC, 50 hours cross country and 10 hours of night flying. The instrument rating will allow
you to fly IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) in IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) and comprises of
40 hours of instrument instruction. You will already have 10 hours of instrument instruction from your
night rating; you will therefore need a further 30 hours of instrument flying to complete the rating. You
have the choice to complete your Commercial Licence on a twin engine or on a single engine aircraft.
Should you choose the twin, you will do a twin conversion before you start your instrument rating and do
some of your instrument rating in the twin.

Although it is possible to self study, attendance at our ground school covering the theoretical Commercial
Licence subjects is strongly recommended, this should be done while you are building up your hours. It
should be noted that you need to have finished your Commercial Licence within 2 years of having passed
your last theoretical exam; otherwise the subjects expire and will have to be done again. The subjects are
the following:

 Aircraft technical and general

 Meteorology
 Air law and procedures
 Instruments
 Radio aids
 Human performance
 Flight planning
 Navigation and plotting
 General Radio
 IR

5. Once you have complied with the hour requirements, completed your instrument rating and passed all 8
theoretical exams you will be ready to do your flight tests. An Instrument flight tests as well as a
commercial flight test need to be done. These tests are normally combined in one flight and conducted
by a CAA designated examiner. With the flight test passed and exam subjects completed you will be
able to go to the CAA and get your Commercial Licence issued.

How do I get started?

The first step is to either start your PPL or, if you already have one, book an appointment with us so we can look
at what flying you have already done and advise you on what you need to do next. Lanseria Flight Centre
operates on a case by case basis; we will therefore ensure that a training plan suiting your individual
requirements is set up. Should you wish to train full time our staff will set up a training schedule that suits your
time requirements and make sure that every hour flown is beneficial to your training. Lanseria Flight Centre
operates 7 days per week from 07h00 to 18h00. The time slots available for flight training are as follows:

07h00 to 09h00 09h00 to 11h00 11h00 to 13h00

14h00 to 16h00 16h00 to 18h00

There is no time limit in which you must complete your commercial licence, the only restriction as mentioned
earlier, is that your licence must be completed two years after passing your last exam. If you anticipate that it
will take you more than two years to finish the licence, we advise you to delay doing the theoretical exams until
you know the two year restriction will no longer be a problem.
Should you not reside locally, accommodation and transfers to and from the airport can be arranged in guest
houses and lodges very close to Grand Central Airport.

Advantages of training at Lanseria Flight Centre located at Grand Central

 Training at Grand Central Airport offers the students the best of both worlds, an airport that is conducive to
flight training and access to neighbouring busy challenging Airports environment that will give you a huge
advantage once you are qualified. You will become accustomed to the busy ATC (Air Traffic Control) and air
traffic environment of Grand Central giving you the confidence and professionalism to fly in and out of any
busy airports or airspace system. The efficient air traffic controllers ensure that no time is wasted on the
ground or in the air as delays are extremely rare.
 Grand Central Airport is the hub of business and general aviation in South Africa. By training and spending
time there you will most likely meet many people in the industry and hear of possible job opportunities. Your
3
chances of finding employment once qualified are therefore greatly increased due to the wide exposure to
the aviation industry you will experience at Grand Central.
 Lanseria Flight Centre has an extensive fleet of aircraft and a team of full time instructors ensuring that
aircraft and instructor availability is never a problem.
 The flight school has its own AMO (Aviation Maintenance Organisation). Any aircraft snags or mechanical
problems are therefore quickly rectified and training is not disrupted.
 Our administration and booking system is fully computerised thereby preventing any errors from occurring.
 The weather at Grand Central Airport is good all year round allowing almost uninterrupted training.

What other qualifications can I do?

~ Instructor rating: This rating will allow you to work as a flight instructor once you have completed your
commercial licence. It involves writing two more exams and an additional 25 hours of flight training, 25 hours of
briefings and 50 hours of preparation.

~ Type ratings: You may choose to get rated on some aircraft types commonly used in commercial operations to
increase your chances of finding employment.

~ Airline Transport Pilot licence (ATP): You will need to accumulate 1500 hours of flight time before being eligible
for such a licence. This experience is normally gained during the course of employment. You may however write
the ATP subjects before you have 1500 hours and qualify for a “frozen ATP” until you meet the hour
requirement.

Should you be interested in any of the above ratings please ask our staff to give you more specific information
on the above. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.
