1) Derive an expression for steady flow energy equation for compressible CO1 L3
flow with usual notation.
2) Give general classification of powerplants used in an aircraft. CO1 L1
3) Explain with neat diagram the working principle of a petrol engine. Write CO1 L2
the difference between four stroke engine and two stroke engines.
4) Write short notes on: (i) Constant pitch propeller (ii) Constant Speed CO1 L1
Propeller (iii) Momentum theory of propeller.
5) With a neat sketch explain blade element theory and criteria for blade CO1 L2
selection.

6) Draw a schematic diagram of a gas turbine engine. Explain its CO1 L2


components and working principle.

7) Draw schematic diagram of and write the thrust equation of (i) Turbo CO1 L3
Prop and (ii) Turbo Fan engines.

8) The effective jet velocity of a jet engine is 2000 m/s. the forward velocity CO1 L3
is 1400 m/s. Airflow rate is 80 kg/s. Calculate (i) Thrust (ii) Thrust Power
(iii) Propulsive efficiency. [Use simplified thrust equation]

9) What are the advantages and disadvantages of (a) Turbo Prop Engine (b) CO1 L1
Turbofan engine?

10) The following data applies to a turbojet flying at an altitude where CO1 L3
ambient conditions are 0.458 bar and 248 K. Speed of aircraft = 805
Km/hr. Compressor pressure ratio: 4:1, Turbine inlet temperature is 1100
K. Nozzle outlet area: 0.0935 m2, Heat of reaction of the fuel = 43 MJ/kg.
Find thrust and TSFC. Assume Cp = 1.005 KJ/kg.K and γ= 1.4.

11) Explain the following with reference to gas turbine cycle (i) Thermal CO1 L2
efficiency (ii) Propulsive efficiency (iii) Overall efficiency.
