Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

One of the main focuses of a student is learning how to cope with the various

activities that they are facing academically and non-academically (extracurricular

activities). Oral recitations, school projects, written works and quarterly

assessments are some of the examples of the academic activities that most

students focus in, but there are also the extracurricular activities such as

educational sports, school clubs, dancing and singing tropes and a lot more,

which are just as necessary as the academic ones. The current state of the

students’ learning mechanisms have both improved and worsen through the

years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Multitasking is one of the

solutions that students have found, often related to the issue of procrastinating.

Because of the students’ different ways of approach, countless research studies

all over the globe was made and it was proven and tested to provide good and

bad results.

It is stated that the human brain is not made for multitasking because it will

split the attention that the mind needs in order to focus and concentrate which

leads to the reduce of productivity and efficiency. However, a lot of people also

stated that it can help shape the human brain into something more adaptable to

tasks that has to be done in a short period of time which often leads into the

method of multitasking. Recently, multitasking received an increase of attention

in the past few years (specifically when the pandemic started), and is still

continuously increasing up until now.

Back in 2019, there was a pandemic called COVID-19 that broke out which

affected a lot of people. One of its most affected victims are the students,

specifically those in higher levels. As stated by

The researchers found several gaps relating to this topic from other research

studies, learning how to cope with the various activities in school offers

numerous publications all over the globe. Countless research studies often focus

on the physical and psychological ways of catching up with the different types of

approaches such as: sleeping early, stress relieving toys (sensory toys), tutoring

lessons etc. However, there isn’t really that many studies that is focused of the

methods used by the students in order to catch up. Multitasking is one of those

methods, as stated on the introduction, it has both positive and negative results.

Studying the influences of multitasking on the Senior High School students in

Holy Cross of Bunawan Inc. will certainly prove to be useful for the future

incoming Senior High students.

The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of multitasking

various academic and extracurricular activities on the academic performance of

the students whether if it is really negative or positive. At this time of age after the

COVID-19 pandemic where most students find studying hard and joining

extracurricular activities a problem, it is very important that this study will be

conducted in order to gain knowledge from the possible experiences of the

participants to provide motivation and guidance to the future Senior High School
students for the possible challenges that they will encounter that is related to the

topic.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the influence of multitasking various academic

and extracurricular activities and its connection to the academic performance of

the Senior High School students in Holy Cross of Bunawan Inc. At this point of

the study, the hardships and experiences of the students will be defined as a

guide and a lesson to the future Senior High School students. This will help them

in their journey into becoming a student with enough knowledge and skills in

order to deal with the various activities that they will encounter.

Research Questions

1. What are the possible experiences of the students who multitasked their

academic and extracurricular activities?

2. What are the possible challenges encountered by the students when

multitasking?

3. What are the realizations of the students after comparing their actions in

multitasking to their academic performance?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The participants of the study will be the Senior High School students in Holy

Cross of Bunawan Inc. The primary focus of this study is to understand the

influence of efficient methods in multitasking various academic and

extracurricular activities on the students’ academic performance. Upon selecting

the participants, the following must be considered: (1) He or she must be a

Senior High School student in Holy Cross of Bunawan Inc.; (2) He or she must

be involved in extracurricular activities such as: Drum and Lyre Corps (DLC),

Gazette, Crossian Scout, Student Council (SC) etc. and must be active with it; (3)

He or she must have an

METHODS

This chapter presents the methods that will be used by the researchers in

gathering the data. It also includes the methods, sampling technique,

instruments, and analysis treatment to be used.

Research Participants

The participants of the study will be the Senior High School students S.Y.

2023-2024 of Holy Cross of Bunawan. In phenomenological studies and

interviews, Creswell (1998) suggested to have at least two to ten participants. As

the researchers identified the population of the participants, there are 663 in total.

And basing from the suggestion of Creswell, there will be 10 respondents for this

study.

Research Sampling
In this study, the researchers will use non – probability sampling method,

specifically the purposive sampling method to choose the sample. Purposive

sampling will be used to select respondents that are most likely to yield

appropriate and useful information’ (Kelly, 2010:317) and it is also a way of

identifying and selecting cases that will use limited research resources effectively

(Palinkas et al., 2015).

Data Collection Procedure

In order to accomplish the study, the researchers will follow the following

steps: First, a request letter will be sent to the school president in order to allow

the researchers to conduct an interview with the Senior High School Students.

After the approval, there will be assent letters for the 10 chosen participants to

sign. Then, the researchers will proceed to interviews which will be done in the

school depending on the availability of the participants using the validated

interview-guide questions. Also, the participants will be given a free time to think

and express their thoughts during the interview in order to have a thorough

discussion. Next, after gathering the data, the researchers will proceed to data

analysis using thematic methods. The researchers will be transcribing the

collected data from interviews, and will later produce printed copies in order to

proceed to data analyzing. After data analysis, the themes and centered

responses will be interpreted and discussed with supporting information. These

will be presented for further discussion. Lastly, after gathering, analyzing,

presenting, and creating conclusions, these data gathered will be kept to

maintain confidentiality.

Data Analysis

In analyzing the data collected, thematic analysis will be used. According to

Caulfield (2019), he defined thematic analysis as a method of analyzing

qualitative data. It applies a set of texts and transcriptions of the data collected.
