Water

Water distribution from Jolo Mainland Water District is limited to

the city and nearby towns.

Most commercial or retail outlets in town have access to running

water though not potable.

Other areas have deepwell as water source and boiling drinking/

potable water is a must for residents on a daily basis.

Irrigation systems needed for large scale farming.

More water refilling stations also needed.

Power

Power is provided by Suleco, though only less than half of the entire
province is electrified.

In areas with power they experience few outages on a daily basis.

Those who can afford have gensets; cost of diesel is lower owing to
supply trade from Malaysia.

Electricity is limited to the areas of Jolo, Maimbung, parts of

Patiukul, Indanan and Talipao.
Connectivity

Globe - with mobile signal (poor data connectivity)

Smart - no signal or data connectivity

Outside Jolo - no signal / no data connectivity

Bank of America also partnered with GK for these villages.

The first collaborative partnership with Sulu’s LGU and GK was for
the village in Parsugbatan Patikul established in 2007 and home to
30 families selected as beneficiaries. Cost of each home is about
Php 150,000 by today’s standards (3x4 size). Partner was Philippine
Marines who helped the families build the houses. LGU
counterpart was the 1 hectare land on which the village stands.
They have two small classrooms for children (27) covering kinder to
grade 3.

Agri-Fisheries
Tillable, arable land
Perfect climate for agricultural produce
Human resource – farmers, fishermen
Abundance of seafood due to island waters
Lake Panamao – study if this can be harnessed for irrigation
systems
Agriculture
Most of barangays are farming or fishing communities. Majority of
farmers earning about Php 150.00 every two-three days from cash
crops. There is an abundance of land for planting, and because
climate conditions in Sulu are ideal, produce such as Coconut,
Durian, Mangosteen, Guava, Papaya, Vegetables, Eggplant, Patola,
are grown successfully and in abundance. Coffee is their strong
product now owing to its great flavor. More land is being planted to
this crop (liberica, robusta).

However, there are no post harvest facilities or SSFs in the area.

Processing is done in zamboanga.

Sulu could benefit from identifying specific agri-fisheries industry

roadmaps and investing in TRAINING and post harvest facilities.
(coffee, cacao, bamboo, fruits processing, seafood processing).
Public Schools

Visit made to public schools in areas outside Jolo such as the one in
Sultan Jamalul in Brgy Lawm Maimbung. Most classrooms are in
dire state of neglect and disrepair. Classrooms are badly in need of
rehabilitation. Congestion is the norm where average number of
students per class is 60-80. Some schools have no access roads.

There is also the Abijitu school of arts and trade which is

operational but lacks equipment to have decent operation. No
SPED school exists in the province.

Inside GK villages, the Madrasa (Islamic religious) school system is

in place for young children up to grade 3. Teachers earn an average
of Php 4,000 per month. Small classrooms donated to
accommodate teaching these students.
Private School – Notre Dame College
(Oblates of Mary Immaculate - OMI)

The largest private Catholic academe is the Notre Dame School,

located beside the DPWH compound and heavily guarded by
military forces with only one access road for entry and exit to/from
the school campus for security purposes.

The school is run by the Oblation of Mary Immaculate (OMI).

They have livelihood programs focused on the minority Badjao
settlers, and in 2017 plan to pilot a student entrepreneurship
program in partnership with Go Negosyo.

Notre Dame campus was also the safe haven of Muslims during the
Jolo massacre in 1974. And conversely, when identified Catholic
priests were marked for arrest under Martial Law, it was the MNLF
group that brought the priests to hide in the hinterlands.
The Oblates have also established 4 residential villages in Jolo.
