Lesson Idea Name: Economic Understandings

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade Social Studies
Content Standard Addressed:
SS2E3- Explain that people usually use money to obtain the goods and services they want and
explain how money makes trade easier than barter.

outcomes.

Empowered Learner – 1.1d. Students understand

the fundamental concepts of technology
operations; demonstrate the ability to choose, use
and troubleshoot current technologies, and are able
to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging
technologies.

Knowledge Constructor – 1.3.a. Students plan

intellectual or creative pursuits.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I can set goals to research using new technologies to explain how and why people use money for
goods and services.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and are
mostly practice-based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given a voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will start the lesson by going over the learning goals and objectives and explain that in the end,
students will be creating a podcast about today’s topic. I will then use a whole group discussion to
review the material and have students share what they recall and review any misconceptions. I will
then go over what a podcast is and how students will be expected to use it. I will then allow students
to form groups of either two or three to begin brainstorming and creating their script. At this time, I
will be walking around the room checking in with students and will provide technology-related help
as needed. Before students begin their recording, I will have them show me their script so I can
provide any necessary feedback. Finally, I will conclude the lesson by asking for student feedback on
what they did and didn’t like about the activity and will provide them a way to listen to their peer’s
podcasts if they wish.
Managing student learning:
This tool will make students shift from passive to active learners as they have to apply their understandings in
a way that involves problem-solving skills and creativity. I will manage time-on-task by making students create
a podcast script before they begin recording and utilizing the ask 3 then me method. While I will be around
for questions and concerns, I will encourage students to inquire with their peers first.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This instructional tool aligns with the UDL principle of engagement as students are applying their learning and
understanding in a new and interesting way that helps to stimulate their motivation making them more
engaged in the learning process. Additionally, the podcast tool meets the action and expression UDL principle
as it offers support, so all students have access to create, learn, and share their knowledge on the topic. This
is because students can communicate verbally with their group, physically write their thinking in a script, and
actively create their final podcast. This accommodates to all learners of all abilities and learning styles.
Reflection:
I think this activity is great for stimulating student learning. Having students create something
publishable leads to greater effort and allows for everyone to engage in the process. I look forward
to implementing this entire lesson with students. I think this standard is a great one to do a podcast
with, however, anytime a podcast is possible I think it is a great way to get students thinking critically
and enjoy reporting what they have learned. This could even be used as a performance-based
summative assessment instead of having students take a typical test which I think could be a great
alternative.
