COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS:

TIMBER AND REINFORCED CONCRETE

FIVE (5) STRUCTURE AND COMPARISON OF TIMBER AND REINFORCED CONSTRUCTION IN

TERMS OF:

 BRIDGES
TIMBER-WOOD CONSTRUCTION:
Wood has always been a popular building material and
has contributed significantly to the advancement of
architecture. Short and medium span loads are well
suited for timber bridges. This includes moving objects
like bicycles, motorbikes, and foot activity. A proposed
design for LUO made for display and a pedestrian
walkway to the other side of the river is shown in the
picture, which serves as an illustration of this. Combining
the latest developments in wood design with the use of
glued-laminated timber, stress-laminated deck, and
preservative treatment enables the construction of
affordable, simple, and long-lasting wooden bridges.

However, wood also has significant drawbacks, such as

being extremely/highly flammable, and prone
to infestations, termites, and woodworm.

REINFORCED CONCERTE CONSTRUCTION:

Many countries' bridge designs have resulted in the
creation of standard precast, prestressed concrete beams
that are typically designed to work in conjunction with
a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck slab. Precast
sections of a bridge are often used for bridges
with medium spans of up to 40 meters. Segmental
prestressed concrete hollow box girders are commonly
utilized for lengthy spans.

Cracks, stripping and exposure of reinforcement, water.

leakage, flake off and discoloration, and deterioration
are frequent defects in concrete bridges, with corrosion
of the reinforcement being one of the main causes.
 BUILDINGS
TIMBER-WOOD CONSTRUCTION:
In contrast to building made out of woods, mass timber
construction employs a class of engineered wood products
made of huge, solid wood panels, columns, or beams that
are often fabricated off-site for load-bearing wall, floor, and
roof construction. Mass timber, like concrete and steel,
is manufactured for high strength ratings but is substantially
lighter in weight. Mass timber products are thick,
compacted layers of wood that combine to form strong,
structural load-bearing elements that can be attached with
roof panels.

REINFORCED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION:

Nowadays, reinforced concrete is the most utilized
material in the construction of structures because of
its undeniable strength due to the steel implanted in
such a way that the two elements operate together in
resisting forces. Unlike the timber wood construction of
a building, this incorporates components such as rods,
bars, mesh, which are absorbed by the tensie, shear,
and strengthen the concrete structure. A simple
structure, on the other hand, is insufficient to support
a skyscraper or tall building.

 FOUNDATIONS

TIMBER-WOOD CONSTRUCTION:
For generations, timber wood construction has been
employed, providing a versatile and renewable
building material that combines aesthetics with
environmental sustainability. One of the most
important concerns when starting a timber wood
construction project is the foundation. The foundation
provides the structural support and stability required
to ensure the building's lifespan and safety.
REINFORCED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION:
Reinforced concrete construction has transformed
modern building design by combining strength, durability,
and versatility. The foundation of a building is critical for
providing stability and support, making foundation
selection critical for effective reinforced concrete
construction. Maintenance and longevity are two
examples of reinforced concrete foundation qualifications.
While reinforced concrete is relatively durable, frequent
inspections and maintenance are required to identify
and resolve any signs of degradation, such as corrosion
of the steel reinforcement.

 WATERTANKS
TIMBER-WOOD CONSTRUCTION:
TimberTanks are water storage tanks that blend the
timeless beauty of wood with the durability of galvanized
steel roofs and the current water containment technology
of flexible membrane liners. To maintain the circular
shape, wood staves are custom cut and tied together
with galvanized steel bands. Timber wood water tank
building is a sustainable and visually beautiful alternative
to standard materials. Timber water tanks are a
one-of-a-kind solution for water storage needs due to its
combination of environmental conscience, design
creativity, and functional purpose. To maintain the lifetime
and functionality of these tanks, however, careful
consideration of timber's limitations and the need for
continuing maintenance is required.

REINFORCED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION:

Reinforced concrete water tanks are a reliable solution
for ensuring a stable and durable water storage system.
Their ability to withstand the challenges posed by water
, while providing strength and structural integrity, makes
them an essential component of water infrastructure.
Proper design, construction, and maintenance practices
are key to ensuring the longevity and functionality of
reinforced concrete water tanks, contributing to the
consistent and safe supply of water for various needs.
 RETAINING WALLS
TIMBER-WOOD CONSTRUCTION:
Retaining walls are crucial structures that provide support,
prevent soil erosion, and create level surfaces on sloped
terrains. Timber wood construction offers a versatile and
environmentally friendly option for building retaining
walls. Timber is a renewable resource, making it an
eco-friendly choice for construction. When sourced
responsibly, timber construction can have a lower carbon
footprint compared to other materials. Though, timber
is susceptible to decay and insect infestations,
necessitating proper treatment and maintenance,
timber has load-bearing limitations, affecting the height
and structural capacity of the retaining wall and proper
maintenance and protective measures are crucial to
extend the life of the timber retaining wall.

REINFORCED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION:

Retaining walls are essential structures used to
stabilize slopes, prevent soil erosion, and create level
surfaces in various landscapes. Reinforced concrete
is a popular and effective material choice for
constructing robust and durable retaining walls.
Reinforced concrete construction of retaining walls
offers a reliable and versatile solution to soil
stabilization and erosion control. The strength,
durability, and adaptability of reinforced concrete
make it a suitable choice for retaining walls of various
heights and complexities. However, proper design
and engineering are critical to ensure the retaining
wall's stability and resistance to soil pressure
