CHAPTER
STEM as a foundation in taking STEM related courses in college

within Taytay, Rizal

As a foundation for pursuing STEM-related courses, it equips


students with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the
complexities of the modern world. This field is responsible and requires
the students to explore the role of STEM as a foundational element in
education, providing students with a robust platform for their future studies
and careers in STEM fields. It delves into the intricacies of STEM
education, its impact on learners, and its implications for the future of
education and workforce development.

However, everyone perceived that this field are more challenging


than other strands. This can act as a deterrent for students who might
otherwise have an interest in this field. For instance, in U.S.A De &
Arguello (2020) revealed that if the students see the value in the course,
they may perceived certain components less as challenging, leading to
more positive attitude that may lead to pursue the path they were taking.
Exploring the stem-education will later on help them to understand the
more challenge they will face the more chances it will help them to build a
strong foundation in the future. Students need to know enough about the
strands early on in order to avoid hesitation in their educational path.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is one of


the four strand that Philippines offers to Senior High School students. It
expose students to science and mathematics and it serves as their
foundation in college. Most schools in the Philippines organize events for
stem students to participate ,in that way it enhances the creativity of each
individuals. In the BBM Vlog 113 posted on Facebook, President
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. admitted that the Philippines is falling behind in
terms of science and mathematics. According to Melanie Sison (2022) in
the Philippines, despite numerous attempts to improve its educational
outcomes, has instead become an educational laggard, taking the
ignominious distinction of getting low rankings in three different global
evaluations that scored students’ performance in science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Moreover, being a stem student in Rizal ,the researchers noticed and
observed that STEM students often face challenges. Such as the lack of
resources , and the difficulty understanding complex concepts. Aside from
that STEM students often encounter high level of academic pressure due
to demanding curriculum. This may lead confusion and discouragement to
students whose plan to take STEM related courses.
Background of the Study

The current study, "STEM as a Foundation in taking STEM related


courses in college within Rizal " is to ascertain why senior high school
STEM education is important to take as preparation for STEM-related
college courses.

The study "STEM as a foundation in taking STEM related courses"


focuses on the ways in which students' pursuit of STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses might be positively
impacted by a solid foundation in these topics. By knowing their
connection, this study may help empower teachers and representatives to
provide better guidance and support to students in their STEM education
journey. students in their STEM education journey, by recognizing this
relationship this can boost a students' proficiency, intelligence, passion,
and success in STEM fields. Fields that play a pivotal role for innovation
and societal growth, making this study significant to develop a better
future for education.

After a thorough review of the existing literature on the influence of


STEM education on college course selection, it is evident that there is a
significant gap in understanding the role of STEM education in the choice
of STEM-related courses in college. While several studies have explored
the impact of STEM education on students' academic performance, there
is a lack of research focusing on how STEM education influences
students' choice of college courses. Therefore, the researchers intend to
take survey questionnaires to know how this affects the selected college
students. The data that the researchers gather will help them identify how
STEM became the foundation for some college students to take college
courses. To fill those gaps, researchers objectives are to investigate,
analyze, and gather information
Statement of the Problem:

The intent of this research is to find out how STEM education affects

courses in college.

Objectives:

 To investigate the effect of taking stem strand in senior highschool

to students that’s taking STEM related courses in college.

 Investigate and analyze the factors that influence college students

in Taytay, Rizal in taking STEM-related courses.

 Gather information about the advantages of taking STEM-related

courses in college.
Conceptual Chart

The graph shows how STEM has become the foundation for various

STEM-related courses. The phrase "SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,

ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS" represents the primary source of

advanced knowledge that enhances critical thinking, creativity, and skills.

STEM subjects like science, technology, engineering, and math are now

really important in college because they're recognized as vital in many

parts of society. By offering subjects that are necessary for their next

stem-related courses, stem helps students increase their knowledge and

how college students decide about their future job routes is influenced by

STEM-related courses.
STEM subjects provide the foundational knowledge necessary for

understanding complex concepts and theories within their respective

fields. Science and mathematics form the backbone of STEM-related

courses, providing the tools and concepts necessary for innovation and

problem-solving in various field. And because STEM covers different

areas, it helps students learn important skills like problem-solving and

creativity. Colleges have integrated STEM subjects into their curricula to

prepare students for careers in these dynamic fields, providing them with

the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed.


Scope and Limitations

This research aims to determine the effect of stem as a foundation in

taking stem related courses in college within taytay,rizal. The data

collection will be conducted to 10 randomly college students that takes

stem related courses. To prove the affirm of the study,we created a

google form with questions answered by the respondents.This study will

not cover other problems that are not related to stem courses. The

researchers will not take respondents that didn't take stem as a strand in

senior high school. Each of the respondents will be given a questionaire

through google form to answer. The result of this study will only be

applicable to the respondents of this study. The main source of the data

will be the questionaire, which is prepared by the researchers.


Definition of Terms

STEM education - in this study, this word refers to a field that highlighted

the advancements of science and technology-related. In Addition, this

platform also a practice for pursuing their future career.

Academic Performance - this refers to the performance of the students by

taking STEM education that promotes innovation and creativity that helps

to improve the knowledge of the students.

STEM strand - in this study, ths word refers to building a strong

foundation in the future by taking this strand that helps to enhance the

skills and knowledge of students.

Foundation - it is defined as a development of the skills and knowledge of

the students in terms of pursuing their path.

Stem-related courses - As used in this study, this refers to educational

courses pursuing in college that focus on science and technology related

topic. Also, taking this courses requires a strong foundation and

background in STEM strand in SHS


Students - in this study, this refers to a learners that taking STEM

education to build a strong foundation for taking STEM-related courses in

college.
