during the forecast period, supported by the pharma and ecommerce sectors.
The largest destination type for the market is “Domestic.” The domestic segment
is supported by destination type, wholesale, and retail trade end-user segment.
Among all the end-user industries, “wholesale” and “retail” trade are the largest
14
contributors to the freight and logistics market. Their end-user segment is
boosted by e-commerce in India, which has increased by 31.88% YoY and
reached $85.42 billion in 2021.
The Government of India has set the target to bring down the current 14% logistics cost
of India’s GDP to 9% by 2022 and has requested the Ministries of Railways, Transport,
Shipping, and Aviation to work in tandem to reach the aforementioned goal.

3.5 Warehousing and Fulfillment
Warehousing and fulfillment are two essential components of the supply chain management
process. Warehousing involves the storage and management of goods, while fulfillment
refers to the process of receiving, processing, and delivering customer orders. Both functions
play a crucial role in ensuring efficient inventory management, order accuracy, and timely
delivery.
The key functions of warehousing include:
• Storage:
One of the primary functions of a warehouse is to provide a secure and organized space for
storing goods. Warehouses are equipped with various storage systems such as racks, shelves,
bins, and pallets to accommodate different types of products. Proper storage ensures that
goods are protected from damage, theft, and deterioration.
• Inventory Management:
Warehouses play a vital role in managing inventory levels effectively. They keep track of
stock levels, monitor product expiration dates, and implement inventory control measures to
prevent stockouts or overstock situations. By maintaining accurate inventory records,
warehouses enable businesses to optimize their supply chain operations and meet customer
demands efficiently.
• Order Consolidation:
Warehouses often receive goods from multiple suppliers or manufacturers. They consolidate
these incoming shipments into larger quantities or units before distributing them to
customers. This process helps reduce transportation costs and improves overall efficiency by
minimizing the number of shipments required.
• Order Picking:
When customer orders are received, warehouses are responsible for picking the required
items from their inventory. This process involves locating the products within the warehouse,
verifying their accuracy against the order details, and preparing them for shipment. Efficient
order picking methods such as batch picking or zone picking can significantly improve
27
productivity.
• Packaging:
Warehouses are responsible for packaging products in a manner that ensures their safe
transportation while minimizing packaging waste. They select appropriate packaging
materials, such as boxes, bubble wrap, or pallets, based on the nature of the products being
shipped. Proper packaging protects goods from damage during transit and enhances the
overall customer experience.

28
to customers’ locations. They select appropriate shipping methods based on factors like
package size, weight, destination, and delivery time requirements. Fulfillment centers also
track shipments in real-time to provide customers with accurate delivery updates.
• Returns Management:
Fulfillment centers handle returns and manage the reverse logistics process. They receive
returned items from customers, inspect them for damage or defects, update inventory records
accordingly, and process refunds or replacements as per the company’s return policy.
Effective returns management helps maintain customer satisfaction and reduces financial
losses.
• Customer Service:
Fulfillment centers often provide customer support services related to order inquiries,
tracking updates, or product information. They serve as a point of contact for customers,
addressing their concerns and resolving any issues related to the fulfillment process. Prompt
and efficient customer service contributes to a positive customer experience.
Reverse logistics refers to the process of managing the flow of products or materials from
their final destination back to their point of origin. It involves activities such as product
returns, repairs, refurbishment, recycling, and disposal. The key functions of reverse logistics
are crucial in optimizing supply chain efficiency, reducing costs, minimizing environmental
impact, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
29

management ensures that returned products are properly assessed, categorized, and processed
for appropriate actions such as repair, replacement, refurbishment, or disposal.
• Remanufacturing:
Remanufacturing is a key function within reverse logistics that involves disassembling
returned products to their core components and rebuilding them into fully functional
products. This process not only extends the lifecycle of products but also reduces the need for
raw materials and energy consumption. Remanufactured products often undergo rigorous
testing to ensure they meet or exceed original product specifications.
• Inventory Management:
Effective reverse logistics requires efficient inventory management systems to track returned
products throughout the entire process. This includes accurately identifying returned
products, updating inventory records, and ensuring proper storage and handling of returned
items. By effectively managing inventory, companies can minimize costs associated with
excess stock and optimize the utilization of resources.
30
origin. This includes coordinating pickup, packaging, labeling, and shipping of returned
items. Efficient transportation and logistics processes help minimize costs, reduce transit
times, and ensure the safe handling of returned products.
• Data Analysis and Reporting: Reverse logistics relies on data analysis and reporting
to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. By analyzing data related to product
returns, repair rates, customer feedback, and other metrics, companies can identify root
causes of returns, implement corrective actions, and optimize their reverse logistics
processes.
31
SWOT ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
Overall Satisfaction: While some age groups show higher overall satisfaction,
there are still a considerable number of respondents in all age groups who rate
the overall level of service as "Poor" or "Very Poor." This is a clear weakness
that demands attention.
OPPORTUNITIES
THREATS
32
competitors excel in areas where the surveyed logistics providers have
weaknesses, they may lose market share.
Changing Consumer Expectations: Consumer expectations in the logistics
industry can change rapidly. Failure to adapt to evolving customer preferences
and demands could be a threat.
Negative Word of Mouth: Dissatisfied customers, especially those who
rated services as "Poor" or "Very Poor," may spread negative word of mouth,
potentially damaging the reputation of logistics providers.
In summary, this SWOT analysis suggests that logistics providers in India have strengths
in timely deliveries and dispute resolution, but they need to address weaknesses in
product availability and overall satisfaction. There are opportunities to improve these
areas and leverage the diverse age group composition of customers. However, they also
face threats from competition, changing customer expectations, and the potential for
negative reviews and reputation damage.
