CHAPTER I

The Problem and It’s Background

Background of the study

Online game is very popular and most used to this modern era. The rapid spread of

mobile technology in recent years has significantly altered our lives, including students'

education. Some people enjoy playing mobile games in their leisure time because of the

excitement they provide. Furthermore, because of a lot of schoolwork, adolescents tend

to feel stressed during school hours therefore, playing mobile games will ease their

stress. Today's youth are the most influenced by technology. They are always focused

on their gadgets.

Students are often focused on playing more than doing their school works. Mobile

gaming is one of the factors which affect academic performance of students. With the

invention of computers, cellular phones, and the internet. Most students tend to use their

vacant time playing games, especially mobile games. They prefer playing over than

having their free time on their school works. Students aged 10-20 are mostly those

who’s experiencing game addiction. Mobile game also contributes on the advancement

of student's cognition which will help him solve problems, either complex or not. Mobile

gaming brings negative impacts on students' academic performance.


Kids and teenagers are focused on mobile games like Mobile legends, Call of duty

mobile, Genshin impact and many more. They say that playing mobile games helps

them relieve their stress, for relaxation, enjoyment, and playing because of the

challenge and competition. Human progress and development are highly influenced by

the power of information and technology. Digital technology has made a big difference in

the lives of younger people, especially students. They socialize through mobile and

internet interaction.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to find out the possible effects of playing mobile games for hours, on

the passing of the students’ activities and projects on time.

1. How does playing games impact students' academic performance?

2. How do students who struggle with time management skills balance their academic

responsibilities with their desire to play mobile games?

3. How do the addictive games of certain mobile game destruct the students and

neglecting their academic responsibilities?

Scope, Delimitation/Limitation

Playing mobile games has a big impact on student’s academic performance. There may

be positive and negative impact, depends on how the student manage and handles it.

The participants of this research will be conducted among teenagers who are in
grade/level 9-10. This study will determine the types of online games played and its

impacts on teenage students in Lord’s Hand Academy Inc. The participants will be

students who want to focus on studying but finding enjoyment playing games.

Hypothesis

It is hypothesized that students who spend more time playing online games will exhibit

lower academic achievement, as evidenced by lower grades, decreased participation in

academic activities, and reduced focus on academic responsibilities. Additionally, this

relationship may be influenced by factors such as the type of games played, frequency

of gameplay, and individual characteristics of the students.

Significance of the study

The result of this study with benefit the following:

Students. This study will help students realize what are the importance of prioritizing

academics first before playing games. So, this research will benefit students by

persuading them to be more responsible in academics first.

Teachers. Through this study, the teachers may find way how to cope with students

prioritizing paying games than passing activities and projects on time.

Parents. Parents or guardians can guide the student by encouraging them to study first
before facing their phones to play.

Future researcher. The conducted findings of our research can serve as a guide source.

This study may be used as basis for more learning theory.
