Unit 1: Introduction (Properties of Fluids)
Basic Concept and Definitions of Fluid Mechanics, Properties of fluids, Application of Fluid
Mechanics, continuum concept, Effects of shear stress, Types of Fluid(Newtonian and Non-
Newtonian, Plastic and Real Fluid), Concept of control volume
Unit 2: Physical Properties of Liquids
Density(mass density, weight density, specific volume), Specific Gravity, Surface tension and
Capillarity, Compressibility and Bulk Modulus, Viscosity and Newton’s law of viscosity
Unit 3: Pressure Measurement
Pressure Head of a Liquid(Pressure Depth Relationship), Pressure at a point and pressure
relationship, Pascal’s Law, Measurement of Pressure, Differential Principle and its use,
Boardon Gauge
Unit 4: Hydrostatic Forces on Submerged Surfaces
Total pressure and centre of pressure, Pressure on horizontally immersed surfaces, Pressure
on vertically immersed and curved surfaces, Forces on gate, Dams and other water remaining
structures
Unit 5: Buoyancy and Flotation Concept
Thrust of immersed surfaces and Archimedes’ Principle, Types of equilibrium of floating
bodies, Metacentre and Metacentric height and its determination, Fluid within a rigid body
subjected to motion (Acceleration and Rotation)
Unit 6: Fluid Kinematics
Langrangian and Eulerian approaches of describing fluid flows, Catresian and Polar co-
ordinates, Discharge and mean velocity of flows, Types of flow lines (Path line, Streamline,
Streak line , etc), Types of Fluid Flows (Steady and Unsteady, Uniform and non- uniform with
time and space criteria)
Unit 7: Dynamics of flows
Various forces acting on a fluid, Euler’s equation of motion and its application, Derivation of
Bernoulli’s equation from Euler’s equation, Energy of steady fluid flow, Bernoulli’s Theorem,
Introduction to Navier stokes equation, Flow past submerged bodies, Drag and lift forces,
Drag on sphere and cylinder, Boundary layer definition, Concept of Thickness and Theory
Unit 8: Flow through Orifices
Orifice flow (introduction, classification, filling and emptying of tanks), Application of
Bernoulli’s equation to orifice flow, Discharge through orifices, Orifice meter, Nozzle meter,
Venturimeter, Principle of application of Notches and weir
Unit 9: Momentum and Dimensional Analysis
Impulse-Momentum Equation and derivation, Application of impulse-momentum equation
to calculate force on pipe bends, reducers, Impact free jet, Concept of angular momentum
(moment of momentum), Dimensional Analysis ( Rayleigh’s Methods, Backingham’s theorem)
