Day 1: Prejudice and Bias

Concept Notes:
The main difference between Prejudice and Bias is that Prejudice is a prejudgment or forming an
opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case, while Bias is an inclination or outlook to
present or hold a partial perspective.
Bias
 Bias is prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a
way considered to be unfair.
 People may develop biases toward or against an individual, an ethnic group, a sexual or gender identity,
a nation, a religion, a social class, a political party, theoretical paradigms, and ideologies within academic
domains, or a species.
Example:
If someone has a bias about women, they can take two different approaches. If they're biased toward
women, they might hire only women because they feel they make better employees for some gender-
related reason. Conversely, if they're biased against women, they might hire a man over a more qualified
one.
Prejudice
 Prejudice is an affective feeling towards a person or group member based solely on their group
membership.
 In this case, it refers to a positive or negative evaluation of another person based on their perceived
group membership.
Example:
Other modern-day examples of prejudice include assumptions that men are more adventurous than
women, that women are more emotional than men, and that gay men are effeminate. Prejudice can be seen
1
in discriminatory actions, such as wealthy-looking people receiving better service in stores, women losing
out to men for promotions, and police paying more attention to black teens than white teens.
Exercise no. 18.1
Directions: State whether the statement for each item shows bias or prejudice.
_______ 1. A mentally disabled person should not be allowed to go to school. They do not possess the
capacity to learn.
_______ 2. A big amount of food was shared with his closest neighbor only.
_______ 3. He's considered dumb because his grades in all subjects are poor.
_______ 4. The newly opened hotel in our town accommodates only rich people.
_______ 5. Because he is a new member of the group, his opinion was rejected during the meeting as the
senior officers underrated it.

Day 2: Theme
Concept Notes:
A one-act play is a short piece of drama that consists of only one act. It usually has one or more
scenes but does not exceed one act. The theme is the most important element of a good screenplay. It is
the driving intention behind the play. It is the message that the writer is trying to get across to the
audience which, when effectively communicated, satisfies them, emotionally and analytically, and makes
them feel they have just watched a good play.
The theme is the message the play wants to convey. Themes develop from a playwright's
personal values (moral, social, or political) expressed through a play's plot and characters. In a sense, the
theme is your moral or ethical position about the story you are telling.
