World Cancer Day
(4 February)

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on 4 February to raise awareness of

cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day is
led by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World
Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The slogan for this year’s WCD has been known to be
‘Close The Care Gap’.

The term cancer first came about by the discoveries of Greek scientist Hippocrates (460-
370 B.C) who was able to deduce that cancer generally develops where the balance of
the four body humours(blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile) were lost.

Since then, there have been many breakthroughs and discoveries focusing on the causes
and prevention of cancer. A well- known example is that of Marie Curie, who invented
radiation as a method of treating cancer, as radium killed diseased cells faster than
healthy cells. Other scientist involved in these major feats include Rudolf Virchow,
Giovanni Morgagni, John Hunter, Johannes Muller and Stephen Paget.

Today we have been assigned with this task: To help save lives by spreading awareness
against cancer, and take action against the disease.
So, why don’t you go out there and ‘Close The Care Gap’
