◼ Characteristics of TEmn, TMmn waves in
rectangular waveguide
◼ Power transmission in rectangular waveguide
◼ Power loss in rectangular waveguide

3
Rectangular waveguide
◼ Is a 4 wall metal guide.
◼ Wave propagates in the enclosed volume.
◼ Has a rectangular cross section
a (broad) × b (narrow) Y
◼ It supports HOM: b
➢ TE mode X
a
➢ TM mode
Z

4
Rectangular waveguide
◼ TE mode: (Transverse Electric)
➢ Electric field don’t has component in the
direction of propagation
◼ TM mode: (Transverse Magnetic)
➢ Magnetic field don’t has component in the
direction of propagation

Representation of modes
◼ The general symbol of representation will
be TEmn or TMmn where the subscript (m)
indicates the number of half wave variations
of the electric field or magnetic field along
the a (broad) dimension of the waveguide
i.e., z- direction.

7
Representation of modes
◼ The second subscript (n) indicates the
number of half wave variations of the
electric field or magnetic field along the
b (narrow) dimension of the waveguide i.e.,
y- direction.

13
Dominant modes
◼ TE10 and TM11 are the dominant modes.
◼ It is the mode for the lowest frequency that
can be propagated in a waveguide.
◼ The longest operating wavelength.
