In this research used qualitative and quantitative method where the study was seeking to see
speaking difficulties of Turkish students in English in pronunciation, grammar and
vocabulary and find out why they have speaking difficulties in lecture comprehension, class
participation, and interaction with others. The research used interviews and questionaries as
sources for information. Students sometimes use wrong vocabulary and pronunciation due to
confusing items in the language like false friends which is known as ’language interference’.
In this study 3 reasons affect students and made them have difficulties in learning English.
Firstly, Common problems in pronunciation
Students tend to change the sound when two consonant sounds which have the same point of
articulation occurs such as ‘’On the other hand, (sounds hant),”” English is language which
connects whole world (sounds word)” and,” I think [tink].
Secondly, Effects of Speaking Difficulties Along Lecture Comprehension
Because of speaking difficulties students have difficulties of comprehension during class
lecture like ‘I get confused when I hear unfamiliar words in English’, ‘I have no capacity to
guess the meaning of some words in context.' and ’There are many new words and
expressions I do not understand.’ which are given in the survey and most of the student agree
with it also as Mennen, and Watson (2006) said that just as phonemes serve to distinguish
one word from another word, a system of prominence allows a speaker to contrast the relative
importance of words.
Thirdly, Effects of Speaking Difficulties along Class Participation
According to the study anxiety and insecurity affect most of the students and as Krashen
(1982) said motivation, self-confidence and anxiety plays role in language accusation and this
proved by the survey which ends with ’’strongly agree’’ some of these items are: ‘I am
insecure and anxious whenever I recite in class,’ ‘I am reluctant to participate in class
discussions because I am not sure of my answers/ideas,’ and ‘I hesitate to talk because I
cannot figure out the correct pronunciation of some words in English.’
Lastly, Effects of Speaking Difficulties along Interaction with others
Students have difficulties while speaking with others because of lack of fluency and accuracy
in English and this is one reason of Speaking Difficulties and this proved by the survey which
ends with ’’strongly agree’’ some of these items are: ‘I experience gaps in speaking to others
because I lack fluency and accuracy in English,’ ‘I feel awkward in talking to others because
I am afraid of negative evaluation,’ and ‘I get intimidated when I hear so many unfamiliar
English words around me.’
So as a result, the author suggests some recommendations in order to help students to come
over this situation like ‘The syllabus has to provide guided practice on sound production,
word and sentence stress, intonation, accent reduction and fluency improvement as students
work to develop clearer and more 'natural-sounding' English,’ and ‘Teachers have to think of
ways to provide learners with vocabulary learning strategies.’
In my opinion this study was objective because the author was invisible and did not try to
manipulate the readers, but he just did the research and the survey and provided us with the
results and recommendation.
I think this article would be very helpful for students who decides to learn English and study
its departments also this article helped me personally in some cases to see the solution of how
to come over speaking difficulties like speaking with others which personally I was suffer
from it.
