Inductors

1
• an Inductor is nothing more than a coil of wire wound around a
central core.
• When current flows through it, a magnetic field is produced around it.
• are categorised according to the type of inner core they are wound
around, for example,
• hollow core (free air),
• solid iron core or
• soft ferrite core

inductance
• The current, i that flows through an inductor produces a magnetic flux
that is proportional to it.
• an inductor opposes the rate of change of current flowing through it
due to the build up of self-induced energy within its magnetic field.
• However an inductor will easily pass a steady state DC current.
• This ability of an inductor to resist changes in current is called
Inductance which is given the symbol L with units of Henry, (H)

Inductor color coding
• First find the tolerance band, it will typically be gold (5%) and
sometimes silver (10%)
• Starting from the other end, identify the first band and the second
band. Write down the numbers associated with those colours.
• The third band is the multiplier.
• The value you get is in μH
• A silver first band is a Military identifier
