from p 1 Downtown Healdsburg has blossomed into a boutique Mecca of fine dining, shopping, arts and world-class wine tasting. Yet the town also has its longtime favorite casual eateries for the best burritos and beers anywhere, our local artists wow with their homespun crafts, and some of our finest wines are such coveted, handcrafted productions that you wont find them anywhere else but right here. At the heart of it all is Hotel Healdsburg, home to one of the regions best spas, its top restaurant Charlie Palmers Dry Creek Kitchen, elegant rooms and lobby lounge, and a collection of chic shops. But Hotel Healdsburg and its main street neighborhood also brim with history, celebrating an authentic allAmerican town with deep roots in community partnership and entrepreneurial spirit that has endured for centuries.

The Healdsburg story starts in the early 1850s, when a hopeful gold miner named Harmon Heald set up a general store in an historic Pomo Indian settlement. After finding his calling as a merchant, Heald purchased a tract of land that encompassed what is now downtown Healdsburg. Heald hired a surveyor to mark out plots of land, which he sold for less than $100 each, and he gave plots to local faiths for the construction of churches. Significantly, he gave his most valuable possession, an acre of land in the center of his new town, to the community of Healdsburg to enjoy in perpetuity. Healds remarkable act of generosity created our gorgeous Spanish-style Plaza and remains the center and soul of Healdsburg to this day, showcasing our commercial and civic crossroads. Along the western border of the Plaza, about where Heald set up that first store, is where Hotel Healdsburg is today. But that block has actually existed as the epicenter of local hospitality for more than a century and a half. The Sotoyome House hotel was built nearby in 1858, and the town took on its first catchy slogan to woo weary travelers: Where the Redwoods and Redwood Highway Meet.

In the 1860s, the Union Hotel opened on the exact site where Hotel Healdsburg now stands, and quickly became renown for its fine service. Writing about a trip to the area in July of 1865, a traveler reported that he had passed through a wild and uncultivated tract of country, and arrived at Healdsburg about sunset, where we stopped overnight ... the hotel is kept by a man who knows how. In 1912, the Union became the Plaza Hotel, with 51 rooms and the first elevator in town. Over the following years, the town adopted the farming festivals it is still cherished for today, such as the first annual Prune Blossom Tour of Alexander Valley that was held in 1962 (at that time, prune orchards stood where vineyards now flourish), and the first annual Russian River Wine Festival that was held on the Plaza in 1972. Unfortunately, by the 1970s, the 300 block of Healdsburg Avenue had declined and become Healdsburgs Skid Row. The area was a prime candidate for urban renewal, and so the city bought the entire block, demolished the buildings and began the search for a developer who could bring the area back to life. continued on p 4

from p 3 In the late 1990s, the city sold the land to a partnership led by the Sher family, who own and operate Hotel Healdsburg today with partners Charlie Palmer, Paolo Petrone and John Holt. The ownership team and their staff have embraced the legacy of Healds generosity and community involvement. Over the past decade, Hotel Healdsburg has supported the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, the Healdsburg Steelhead Festival, the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, the Healdsburg Boys & Girls Club, the Healdsburg Shared Ministries Food Pantry, the restoration of Foss Creek which runs behind the hotel, summer concerts in the Plaza and our local schools with Charlie Palmers acclaimed annual Pigs and Pinot event. As it was in 1865, the towns tradition of warm and welcoming hospitality continues strong. To borrow a terrific quote, Hotel Healdsburg is kept by a group of men (and women) who know how. Heres to ushering in another wonderful decade of growth, discovery, and good old-fashioned, neverending charm in Healdsburg. 2001 Hotel Healdsburg and Charlie Palmers Dry

When Marjorie Sisneros-Smith meets a

Hotel Healdsburg spa client, she sees more than simply someone who might have sore muscles, tired skin, or perhaps some stress. She sees an opportunity to restore balance in mind, body and soul, plus a chance to showcase the healing power of Sonoma Countys best organic products, cultivated from local farms and winery gardens. As The Spa Hotel Healdsburgs lead massage therapist and esthetician, she helped open the 3,000 square foot, state-of-the-art property a decade ago, and even then, she was on the cutting edge of natural treatments, such as incorporating local herbs into custom made lotions and soothing creams. Today, working with a team of skilled therapists and spa manager Dawn Stephens, Sisneros-Smith continues her creative approach, putting together innovative packages like the Wellness Weekend, debuting in January at both Hotel Healdsburg and h2hotel. Guests can get a fresh start on the year with restorative and invigorating offerings, renewing their commitment to healthy living, Sisneros-Smith says. She is also trained as a life coach, and beleives that Energy plus healing equal balance. For inspiration, Sisneros-Smith needs to search no further than the fertile Sonoma landscape. She created a body milk of lemongrass, ginger and clove with herbs sourced from Stellaflora Botanicals of Sebastopol, and a footwrap of lavender and rose with flowers from Santa Rosas Matanzas Creek Winery. Herbs and flowers change with the seasons, and she also uses honey from Healdsburgs Quivera Winery and local mustard, custom blending products like peels, scrubs, body butters and aromatherapy fragrances for each client.

Over the years, Sisneros-Smith has welcomed many repeat customers, including some women who have participated in her Barefoot & Pregnant treatments, and now return with their children. Its constantly evolving, she says of her spa experiences. Its a journey. Its all about rhythm, yin and yang, and how nature energizes and revives. Wellness Weekends at Hotel Healdsburg and h2hotel January 6-8 and 20-22, 2012 Package includes: Welcome glass of organic biodynamic wine Daily yoga Outdoor exercise and training amid the beauty of a top Healdsburg winery vineyard Unlimited use of the 60-foot garden pool and private hot tub at Hotel Healdsburg or h2s solar heated pool overlooking Foss Creek Unlimited use of the Hotel Healdsburg gym Goal setting seminars on wellness, healthy cooking, and achieving balance in finances Optional restorative and detox spa services are available at special Wellness Weekend pricing including the Lavender Peppermint Restorative Massages, Wine and Honey Wrap or a Refining Body Polish.

The Acclaimed Healdsburg Artist

Wade Hoefer unveils his New Collection and New Expression

The flowing, meditative California land-

scapes of acclaimed Healdsburg artist Wade Hoefer grace numerous public and private collections and the lobby and hallways of Hotel Healdsburg, melding effortlessly with the dcor for a tranquil, inspirational mood. Beginning in November, Hoefer unveils his new collection, in its first-ever preview exclusively for visitors to and guests of Hotel Healdsburg. Titled (name?) the paintings represent a striking departure for Hoefer, with canvases depicting freeform and abstract shapes crafted with unlikely materials: a base of sea salt, painted with actual spices including black pepper, tumeric, cayenne, curry, paprika, and cumin. Hoefer refers to his designs as organic and celestial, and they do seem to represent moons, suns, planets, and even religious bodies. The shapes of the canvases themselves are expressive, stretched in yawning, distorted edges over frames of wood branches. Some frames are round, and playful, as what Hoefer calls cookies. For the Hotel Healdsburg showing, running November 1-30, Hoefer will display in the Grange and the Carriage House, with one space dedicated to new presentations of his traditional landscapes, and one space dedicated to the new collection.

The spices were inspired, Hoefer says, from his recent 11-year project as artist-in-residence at a small Spanish village north of Barcelona called Torroella de Montgr. The village marketplace brimmed with spices and Hoefer was attracted to their rich, deep, earthy colors in browns, yellows, black, ginger, orange and red. He would visit the market, study the spices, and think of how the idea translated so beautifully to the organic, agriculture and food-rich heritage of Sonoma County. For his process, Hoefer applies a base of clear acrylic gel to a hard salt canvas, and dusts the spices like a cake. He layers more gel and more spices, and then a fixative. The result resonates, mottles, trails in whispery halos at its edges, and sparkles as light moves across it. People leaning in closely can still smell the spices distinctive aromas. The new designs are truly new inspirations; they were created in September in Hoefers new studio amid the vineyards of Soda Rock Winery in Alexander Valley. Hoefer states, I want my work to be poetic visions that create for the viewer an inward sense of meditation and rest. The new organic spice portraits encourage introspection, as well: You can look at the shapes for hours and find your own imagination, says Hoefer.

Dr. C. N. Thomas, who has resided in the East near New York City, for the last seven years, returned last week with his family...They expect to remain on the Pacific Coast. I want to restate what I have often said before: that in my judgment Sonoma county is the best county in California. I have lectured in practically every city in this state, and I have thus had a good opportunity to study the various sections. I do not hesitate to say that in its natural resources this county is unequaled; and for beauty of scenery and delightful climatic conditions it is un-

surpassed. In fact, in all my travels, I know of no spot, take it all-in-all, that for beauty, climate, and productiveness, is the equal of Sonoma county and the choicest post of the county lies within a radius of seven or eight miles about Healdsburg. Yes indeed, I am glad to get back to California, and I trust that I may be a useful citizen and stand for the best things, socially morally, spiritually and intellectually. Our favorite quote from a guest: This bike rides like butter. We also liked this one, too: I am so comfortable on this bike, I might just ride it home. Did we mention that the bikes are beautiful? The architectural frame design is based on the classic Parisian Mixte that was one of the most popular and enduring city bikes during the 1960s and 1970s. We picked this style for the elegant bird-like nature of the construction; its like riding on a fine piece of engineering. The Plaza Suites Redux The Plaza Suites showcase Healdsburgs quiet, comfortable luxury, in grand, yet entirely welcoming style. In 2012, the Suites take on some extra sparkle, as designer Ken Pacada updates their look in new layers of luxury.
