Utilization of CRMB and RAP for Asphalt

Pavement Construction in Qatar
Outline
❑ General Background
❑ RAP Overview
❑ CRMB Overview
❑ PWA Roadmap for recycling
❑ Instructions to use RAP & CRMB
General Background
❑ Road pavement construction in

Qatar has traditionally relied on

primary materials

❑ Most primary materials such as

aggregates and bitumen are

imported

❑ More than 15 million tons of

aggregates are imported yearly

to Qatar
General Background
❑ Large quantities of waste materials

(around 20 million tons/year)

generated from excavation waste,
demolition rubble and used asphalt

❑ At the same time there is shortage

of primary materials in Qatar with

the current crisis in the Gulf region
General Background
❑ These wastes are considered
reusable materials that can be
processed and recycled into the
pavement
❑ Recycling of waste materials is a
very well established technology in
most developed countries
❑ Up to 100% recycled asphalt used
in some countries including USA &
Japan
General Background
❑ Currently, there exist the

knowledge and experience in

Qatar to utilize most of these
waste materials

❑ The current QCS2014 and

upcoming amendment (QCS2018)

incorporates adequate
specifications for the use of
recycled materials. Good news!
Available Recyclable Materials in Qatar

❑ Construction Waste

❑ Excavated Waste

❑ Reclaimed Asphalt
Pavements (RAP)
❑ Used Car Tyres
(Crumb Rubber)
❑ Steel Slag
Benefits of Using Recycled Materials

❑ Substantial cost saving compared

to imported material
❑ Preservation of natural resources
(virgin aggregates)
❑ Reduces asphalt demand
❑ Reduction of the amount of
construction debris placed in
landfills (20,000 tons per day)
❑ Environmental sustainability
Recycled Material Utilization
Recycled Material Utilization

❑ Recycled materials can be

utilized in the embankment
and pavement structure.
RAP
What is RAP

❑ Removed and/or reprocessed

pavement materials containing
asphalt and aggregates

❑ When properly crushed and

screened, RAP consists of high-
quality, well-graded aggregates
coated by asphalt cement.
How is RAP Obtained
Generated when asphalt pavements are removed
for reconstruction, resurfacing, etc
❑ Milling
❑ Hot in-place
❑ Cold in-place recycling
❑ Full-depth removal
(ripping and breaking)
❑ Excess from daily production.
RAP is processed using a series of operations,
including crushing, screening, conveying, etc. as
in RAP Guidelines
How is RAP Obtained

Plant Waste
CRUMB RUBBER
What is CRMB

❑ CRMB is made from combining

crumb rubber from used car/truck
tires and bitumen
❑ Highly controlled specialized
blending process
❑ Meets or exceeds all performance
requirements of PMB but have
superior environmental and cost
benefits
CRMB Overview
Benefits of Crumb Rubber Asphalt

❑ Reduction of the amount of used tire

debris placed into landfills
❑ Improve pavement performance
❑ Reduction of pavement cracking
❑ Increased durability of asphalt
❑ Reduction of pavement noise
(Quiet Pavement).
❑ Reduction in overall lifecycle cost.
Outline
PWA RAP & CRMB Instructions
❑ PWA President’s Instruction to use CRMB in
Lieu of PMB
❑ 2019 RPD Instruction to use CRMB in the
Wearing Course and BC-Class B as required
❑ 2019 RPD Instruction to use RAP in the
Base Course for all roads carrying traffic up
to 3 million ESALs
