SUZIE CELERY
The Munch Bunch are a group
of fruits, vegetables and nuts.
One day they ran away from the
grocer’s shop where they lived.
They made their new homes in and
around an old, forgotten garden shed.
This is a story about Suzie Celery,
one of the Munch Bunch. A

Suzie Celery is one of the
Munch Bunch.
She lives in an oil can. And her best
friend is Supercool the Cucumber.
Suzie’s favourite hobby is dancing.
When she isn’t playing tricks on the
others, that is!
One evening, Suzie and Supercool
were having a lovely time dancing to
their records.
« You dance okay, for a girl, »
said Supercool.
« What! » yelled Suzie, « I can dance
better than YOU. You’re always
treading on my toes. Come to think
of it, I can do everything better than
you! »
« Oh yes? You’d better be ready to
prove that, you crazy girl, » laughed
Supercool.
So they went to see Spud and
explained all about their dispute.
« Yes, I’ll act as referee in your contest,
» he said. « We’ll draw up a list of
events together. But one thing must be
clear, I don’t want ANY CHEATING, »
he said sternly, looking at naughty
Suzie Celery.
The first part of the contest was to
be a test of bravery and skill… it was
juggling with raw eggs!
Suzie wanted to make sure of winning.
So despite Spud’s warning about
cheating, she boiled her eggs the night
before.
« This should fix that crummy
cucumber, » she laughed to herself.
And sure enough, although Supercool
was trying very hard, he broke his
eggs, one after another.
They went all over the place!
Corny-on-the-Cob thought it was
very funny.
« This is an EGGciting game. Ho! Ho!
Do you get it, Spud? Fancy some
scrambled eggs for tea, Supercool? »
But Suzie was the only one who
laughed. She had won so easily.
The next part of the contest was to be
a test of speed.
It was the sack race!
And, just before it was due to start,
Suzie put some heavy rocks in
Supercool’s sack.
« We’ll see who’s best at sack races,
you silly cucumber, » she giggled.
« You’ll never catch me up carrying
this lot! »
When the race started, Suzie soon
jumped into the lead.
And, no matter how hard Supercool
tried, he just couldn’t keep up with her.
He couldn’t understand why he was
going so slowly. Neither could the
spectators.
Suzie was the only one who knew the
reason, but, of course, she kept it a
secret!
The next event was a cross-country
run of over two miles.
And Supercool thought he had a good
chance of winning as he had been
training for a long time.
But Suzie had other ideas. She had no
intention of letting Supercool prove he
was better than her at anything.
Suzie let Supercool get a long
way ahead.
And then she hid behind some bushes
and relaxed for a while.
Poor old Supercool was going to run
two miles round the proper course.
But Suzie knew a short cut.
She waited until she could hear
Supercool puffing and panting on his
way back to the winning line.
Then she ran a little way ahead of him,
pretending that she had run the two-
mile course.
She easily beat him because he was
very tired after his long run.
Spud noticed that Suzie looked very
energetic after her two-mile run.
But nobody guessed the truth.
The last part of the contest was the
canoe race.
Suzie knew that Supercool was good
at canoeing. And so, to make sure he
didn’t win, she made a little hole in the
bottom of his canoe.
« You might get a bit wet Supercool,
but your life jacket will keep you afloat,
» she laughed to herself.
But Suzie had been a bit too naughty
this time. Bounce had seen what she
was up to and decided he’d better do
something about it.
Supercool and Suzie were getting
ready for the race.
« Why don’t you give up now?
Admit it. I’m the best at everything!
laughed Suzie.
But she was a bit worried when she
saw Bounce whispering to Spud.
Just as they were about to lower their
canoes into the water, Spud ordered
them to stop.
« I want you to swap canoes, to make
sure the race is fair, » he said.
Supercool didn’t understand what was
going on, but Suzie’s face grew very
long.
She daren’t say anything, though.
Right in front of everyone, Suzie’s
canoe sank to the bottom of the river.
And she was tipped out into the cold
muddy water.
Supercool turned his canoe round at
once, and helped her to the river bank.
So he didn’t even manage to win the
race!
Suzie caught a very bad cold from her
swim in the river.
But she soon cheered up when
Supercool and the others came to visit
her with little presents.
« See where cheating gets you! » said
Spud. But Suzie thought this was the
best part of the contest.
« Okay, I admit you’re the Winner, »
said Supercool. « But I’ll beat you next
time, you’ll see. »
