This lesson shows you how to create a very

simple ear wire.

Materials for one ear wire:

 3” length of 20ga soft wire

Tools:
 Round nose pliers
 Wire cutters
 Chasing hammer & Steel block or jeweler’s
anvil, or tumbler for hardening the ear wire
 Round pen, pencil or wooden
dowel approximately 3/8” diameter
 Metal file or emery board

Step 1:
Cut a 3” length of wire and round the end by
rubbing it on a file.

Step 2: Using the smallest possible end of
your round nose pliers, make a small closed
loop at the filed end of the wire.

Step 3: Roll an open spiral.

Step 4: Use a pen, dowel, or pencil, whatever

you’ve chosen to form the top of the ear wire.
The bottom of the pen should line up with the top
of the open spiral.

Hold the wire firmly in place with your thumb and

push the wire over the top and around to the
back of the pen. Give the spiral a slight push
toward the underside of the pen.

Step 5: Slip the wire off the pen, flip it over
and hold it firmly against the pen.

Push the wire end down to the pen leaving a

straight length of wire as shown.

Step 6: Lightly hammer the wire to

strengthen, or you can put the ear wires you
make into a tumbler after Step 7 to harden.

Step 7: FINAL STEP! Trim off any excess wire
and rub the wire end against file to round the
end.

To attach dangle, slip over the end you’ve just

filed and down to the open spiral. Use your
round nose pliers to roll the open spiral closed
enough to keep the dangle from slipping beyond
the spiral.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
