● Who we are and maybe History (Alexandra)
The International Paralympic Committee was founded on 22 September of 1989 as a
non-profit organisation. Thanks to the unique combination of ever-improving athletic
performance and increased global awareness, over the years it has become the number
one event to advocate for social inclusion and aims to advance the Paralympic
movement so that athletes can showcase their abilities and achieve sporting excellence.
Some of the values that the movement has adopted to act as a reference for all those
involved in sport are:
- Courage
- Determination
- Equality

● Classification research (Joa).

Para-sport is threatened by the possibility of an athlete competing against another

athlete with a lesser degree of disability, this is totally against the interests of the
organization, so para-athletes are placed in categories to compete according to their
disability; these are called sport classes.
Different sports require athletes to perform different activities, such as sprinting, pushing
a wheelchair, rowing and shooting. Because sports require different activities, the impact
of disability in each sport also varies.
Therefore, in order for the classification to minimize differences in disability, it must be
carefully crafted.

The classification consists in three stages:

1. Does the athlete have an eligible disability for this sport?
It is the first step to know if the athlete can participate. Eligible disabilities for the
organization are: muscle strength impairment, passive range of motion impairment,
limb impairment, among others.

2. Does the athlete's eligible disability meet the sport's minimum disability criteria?
The Paralympic classification rules for each sport describe how severe an eligible
disability must be for an athlete to be considered eligible.
Examples of minimum impairment criteria might be a maximum height for short
stature, or an amputation level for athletes with limb impairment.
3. Which sport class most accurately describes the athlete's activity limitation?
If an athlete is eligible for a sport, the classification panel will evaluate in which sport
class he/she will compete. A sport class groups athletes with a similar activity
limitation for competition so that they can compete equally.

This, again, means that sport classes are different per sport.

● THE REFUGEE PARALYMPIC TEAM(Lu): https://www.paralympic.org/refugee-

paralympic-team

Did you know that for the 2020 Japan Olympics they had a refugee paralympic
team. This team represents the more than 82 million people around the world
who have been forced to flee war, persecution, and human rights abuses, 12
million of whom live with a disability. Six refugees join the Refugee Paralympic
Team to spread a message of inclusion, solidarity and hope with other displaced
people.
For example, we have the story of Ibrahim Al Hussein who’s from Syria, where civil
wars have persisted for a decade. He has been through an accident that changed his
life, Ibrahim’s right leg was severely injured in a bomb explosion and had to be
amputated.Ibrahim has been good at swimming since he was a child. Even though he
had lowered mobility, he did not give up on his dream after the attack. “I want every
refugee to have opportunities in sport. I can’t imagine life without sports,” Ibrahim said.
