Environmental exposure from Extremely Low Frequency (ELF)

Radiation at the vicinity of a high voltage transmission line

Abstract
Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radiation has established a significant
attention as a potential threat to the safety and health of people living in
the vicinity of high voltage transmission lines, power stations and electric
distribution substations. Due to public concern, a study was conducted to
assess the Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radiations from an overhead
High-Voltage Transmission Line (HVTL). The study encompassed a
comprehensive ELF radiation safety assessment at the area below the
HVTL and at areas at close proximity to the HVTL. The results were
logged in the electric and magnetic field strength in the units of volt per
meter (V/m) and miliGauss (mG) respectively. The instrument setup and
measurement protocols during the assessment were adopted from
standard measurement method and procedures stipulated under the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standard. The
results were compared with the standards recommended in the
International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)
guidelines
