The Particle Model of Matter

Matters have mass and occupy space.

• All matter is made up of particles.
• Particles are too small to see.
• One grain of sugar is made up of about 1 000 000 000 000 000 000
particles.
• A material that has one type of matter is called a substance.
• Substances include silver, sugar, and pure water.
All the particles in a substance are the same as each other.

Water is made of water particles.

Particles of different substances are different.

Silver is made of silver particles. Water is made of water particles.

Particles in material are moving constantly, and there’re
different types of interactions between them.

Particles want to spread out - this is called diffusion.
Air pressure comes from the collisions of particles between each
other and with the wall of container.
