➢ BJP leader Basavaraj S Bommai has been selected as the
23rd chief minister of Karnataka.

➢ Basavaraj S Bommai will take his oath on 28th July, 2021.

recently.

➢ Basavaraj Bommai met ex-chief minister BS Yediyurappa as

➢ Previously, Basavaraj Bommai was home minister and was
among the top contenders for post of the state’s chief
minister.

➢ During the legislature meeting of BJP, BS Yediyurappa


proposed Bommai’s name for the post & it was supported by
Karjol Ashok Eshwarappa and all the other BJP MLAs.

➢ BJP has planned on having three deputy chief ministers in


Karnataka’s new government. Govind Karjol, R Ashoka and
Sriramalu are the ones who will most likely be appointed.

➢ Karnataka so far had 22 Chief Ministers but only three of


them were able to complete their full term.

About Basavaraj Bommai
➢ In the year 2008, Basavaraj Bommai joined the BJP & since
then he has rose in the ranks of the party.

➢ Previously, he had held the water resources portfolio.

➢ By profession, he is an engineer & with the Tata Group he had


started his career.

➢ From Shiggaon located in the Haveri district of Karnataka, he


is a two-time MLC and three-time MLA.

On its 15th Foundation Day the Ministry of Earth
Sciences (MoES) launched Earth System Science Data
Portal (ESSDP)

Highlights
➢Dr Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of World
Meteorological Organization (WMO), gave a lecture
during this event.

➢A report on ‘WMO, Disasters, Climate and COP-26’


was discussed along with the issues related to
climate change.

➢ Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of the Ministry of Earth
Sciences launched the MoES-ESSDP (Earth System Science
Data Portal).

➢ It is an integrated digital web portal of the MoES institutes.

➢ This web portal will make the data regarding the various
themes of earth system science available for public usage.

➢ This is available at https://incois.gov.in/essdp & it has been


developed by using the latest technological tools.

➢This portal has been aligned with the initiative,
Digital India, of the Government of India
which aims to transform India into a digitally

➢This portal will facilitate in the retrieval and


search of science data on earth system such

Other launches
➢ A new MoES website was also launched.

➢ This new website will provide a user-friendly interface as well as


cyber security experience to the public.

➢ A book entitled Hydrocarbon fluid inclusions in petroliferous basins


was also released by the minister.

➢ This book discusses about new tools for exploration of oil and is
authored by Dr Jayanthi JL, Project Scientist at NCESS and Dr V
Nandakumar, Former Director of National Centre for Earth Science
Studies (NCESS) which is located in Thiruvananthapuram.

Pune Weather Live App
➢The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also
launched a new mobile app which is named ‘Pune
Weather Live.’

➢This app will provide location-specific and real-time


weather updates for the city of Pune.

➢This app functions by capturing live data from more


than 80 weather stations which also includes
information on rainfall.

IMF World Economic Outlook- Update

➢ On July 27th the International Monetary Fund has cut
India’s GDP growth forecast to 9.5% for the fiscal year
2021-22.

➢ Previously, IMF has forecasted 12.5% GDP growth.

activity due to the second wave of Covid pandemic.

➢ Due to the 2nd wave during the months of March to May


the growth prospect of India has been downgraded & it is
expected that recovery will be slow.

➢The report states that steady recovery is not assured
in any country around the globe as long as the
population remain susceptible to the COVID-19 virus
& its various mutations.

➢For the fiscal year 2022-23, IMF expects an economic


growth of 8.5%, which is more than the 6.9 %
projected by them in the April month.

➢S&P Global Ratings projected a 9.5% growth in GDP


in the fiscal year 2021-22 and 7.8% in the fiscal year
2022-23.

down from the previously projected 10.5%.

➢The World Bank has projected India’s GDP

Global Economy
➢ In the latest World Economic Outlook report published by
IMF, the global economy growth has been projected at 6% in
the year 2021 & 4.9% for the year 2022.

➢ Gita Gopinath, Chief Economist of IMA, has said that


economic recovery globally is going on, but the gap is
widening gap among the developing, emerging and
advanced economies.

➢ IMF has estimated that this COVID-19 pandemic has reduced


the per capita incomes in all the advanced economies of
the world by 2.8%, with 6.3% of per capita loss annually for
the developing markets.

As per RBI data, digital payments in India have recorded a
growth of 30.19% during the financial year which ended on
March 2021.

Highlights
➢ The newly constituted Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI) in its
report said that at the end of March 2021, the index rose to
270.59 from 207.84 the previous year.

➢ The RBI-DPI index has shown the significant growth in its


index represents the rapid deepening and adoption of
digital payments across India in the recent few years.

About Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI)

➢The Reserve Bank announced the construction


of a composite Reserve Bank of India – Digital
Payments Index (RBI-DPI) to look into digital
payments data of the country.

➢March 2018 is considered as the base year to


capture the digitalization data.

Parameters of RBI-DPI
The RBI-DPI comprises of five parameters that enables
the measurement of penetration & deepening of
digital payments across the whole country.

The 5 parameters are:


1. Payment Enablers (25%)
2. Payment Infrastructure – Demand-side factors (10%)
3. Payment Infrastructure – Supply-side factors (15%)
4. Payment Performance (45%)
5. Consumer Centricity (5%).
