I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, at least 90% of the student will be able to:

a. Defined the notes and rests of the fundamentals of music;


b. Identify the difference between the notes and rests;
c. Construct the kinds of notes and rests.

Rhythm is the way that music is a
systematically divided into beats
that repeat a specific number of
times within a bar at a collectively
understood speed or tempo.

about the fundamentals of music
“The Notes and Rests”

discussed in Grade 4 and 5. Right? Yes, we think Ma’am, but we just forget it.

Since you forget it so I will


discuss it and all I want you to do
is to listen and stay with me all the
time. Okay? Yes Ma’am!

What is Note?

Notes are building blocks of


music. They are symbols that
denote pitch (highness or lowness)
and rhythm (long and short) a note
is held or played. A note
composed of head, stem, flag, or
hook.

Now let's move on to the Five


Kinds of Note.

definitions of the 5 Kinds of Note symbols based on its definitions and listen)
with its corresponding symbols)

1. Whole Note – represent by


hallow head shaped like an
oval. It has the longest
time value of four beats.
2. Half Note – also has a
hallow head shaped like an
oval is two beats or half

the value of a whole note.

3. Quarter Note – has a


shaded head with a stem.
To length of sound is one
beat or one fourth of the

duration of a whole note.

4. Eight Note – has a shaded


head with a stem and a
single hook attached to
it.To length of sound is one
half; or one eight of the

duration of a whole note.

5. Sixteenth Note – has a


shaded head with a stem
and a double hook attached
to it. To length of sound is
one-fourth; or one
sixteenth of the value of a Yes Ma'am!

What is Rest?

Rest denote silence. They add


beauty to the musical composition
and give the performer time to
relax or take a deep breath in a
performance. (The students will read and observe the
symbols based on its definitions and listen)
(The teacher will show the
definitions of the 5 Kinds of Rests
with its corresponding symbols)

1. Whole Rest – is a filled in


rectangular placed beneath

a line on a staff. The length


silence of a whole rest is
four beats.

2. Half Rest – is filled in


rectangular placed a top a
line on a staff. The length
of silence of a half rest is
two beats or half of a value
of whole rest.

3. Quarter Rest – looks like a

field in squiggle. The


length of silence of a
quarter rest is one beat or
one fourth of the value a
whole rest.

Eight Rest – is slanted stem


with a flag of left. The
length of silence of an
eight rest is one half beat
or one eighteenth of the
value of the whole rest.

5.

Sixteenth Rest – is a slanted


stem with a double flag on
the left. The length of
silence of a sixteenth rest
is one-fourth beat or one-
sixteenth of the value of a Yes Ma'am!

GENERALIZATION
In general, note tell us note what
to play and for how long, and rest
tell us how long to play nothing or
have silence in the music. The five
kinds of note and rest: whole, half,
quarter, eight, and sixteenth. Notes
and rests work in the same
duration with the same names.

What is the difference between the


note and rest? Notes denote pitch and rhythm while rests
denote silence.
