INTRODUCTION
Spot Speed is the average speed of vehicles passing a point, or the time mean speed. Spot Speed
studies are conducted to estimate the distribution of speeds of vehicles in a stream of traffic at a
particular location on a highway. It is Carried out by recording the speeds of a sample of
vehicles at a specified location.
To Analyze the Speed and the number of vehicles on a determined road Spot Speed is the
average speed of vehicles passing a point. Spot speed studies are conducted to estimate the
distribution of speeds of vehicles in a stream of traffic at a particular location on a highway
which is carried out by recording the speeds of a sample of vehicles at a specified location. Spot
speed studies are used to determine the speed distribution of a traffic stream at a specific
location. The data gathered in spot speed studies are used to determine vehicle speed percentiles
which are useful in making many speed-related decisions.
2. METHODS OF SPOT SPEED MEASUREMENT
Spot speeds may be estimated by manually measuring the time it takes a vehicle to travel
between two defined points on the roadway a known distance apart (short distance) usually less
than 90m. Distance between two points is generally depending upon the average speed of traffic
stream. We had used Stop Watch Methods to measure spot speed of vehicles in a traffic stream.
3. EQUIPMENT USED
The equipment required to carry out stop watch method is
1. Stop watch
2. Measuring Tape
3. Flag

4. PROCEDURE/METHODOLOGY
For the spot speed study, the stop watch method is used. This is one of the simplest methods
for spot speed determination. Two reference points are marked on the pavement at a suitable
distance apart and an observer starts and stops watch as a vehicle crosses these two marks.
From the known distance and the measured time intervals speed are calculated. The spot data
is used to calculate the average speed of traffic stream and the safe speed on the stretch. The
50th percentile speed refers to the average speed and the 85 th percentile speed refers to the safe
speed. The frequency distribution table is the convenient method to find the percentile speed.

5. APPLICATIONS
A spot speed is made by measuring the individual speeds of a sample of the vehicle passing a
given spot on a street or highway. Spot speed studies are used to determine the speed
distribution of a traffic stream at a specific location. The data gathered in spot speed studies
are used to determine vehicle speed percentiles, which are useful in making many speed-
related decisions.
6. CALCULATIONS
The data obtained from the spot speed study were calculated and the following results were
obtained:
37.2 Km/hr
Average Speed (Kmph)
Standard Deviation (Ꝺ) 10.72
Variance (V) 114.87
Model Speed (Kmph) 33 Km/hr
