MAKE - UP EXAMINATION - 2006
STRENGTH OF MATERIALS (CIE - 102)
(Revised Credit System)
18-07-2006
TIME: 3 HRS.] (MAX. MARKS: 50
Note: J. Answer any FIVE FULL questions.
2. Any missing data may be suitably assumed
Q.IA. A stepped bar with three different portion has a fixed supported at one of its ends.
The stepped bar is subjected to forces as shown in fig. Q. No. 1.A. Determine the
stresses and deformation induced in each portion. Also find the net deformation
induced in the stepped bar. E = 200 GPa. (05)
Q1B. A block of size 100mm x 80mm x 15mm is subjected to a force of 60 KN
(compressive) on 80mm x 15mm face and 50 kN (compressive) on 100mm x
15mm face. Determine the magnitude of the forces that are to be applied on face
100 x 80 if the decrease in volume is 10 mm*. Take 1 = 0.3, E = 200 GPa. Also
find K and G of the material. (05)
Q2. (i) Explain BMD and SFD (02)
(ii) Obtain the relationships between load intensity, shear force and bending
moments (03)
Q2.B. Draw SFD and BMD for the over hanging beam subjected to loading as shown in
Fig. Q.No.2.B. Locate points of contraflexure if any. (05)
Q3A. A simple beam of I section has two flanges of 150 x 30mm and a total depth of
300mm with web thickness of 30mm. The beam carries udl over the entire span.
Determine the span of the beam if the maximum bending siress is 5 times the
maximum shear stress. (05)
Q3B. The cross section of a beam is a T ~ section of overall depth 250mm width of
flange 200mm thickness of both flange and web 50mm each. Draw the shear
stress distribution if it carries a shear force of 100 KN. (05)Q4 Find the deflection at C for the beam loaded as shown in fig. Q. No. 4. Take El = 40
MNm. (10)
Q.5A.Prove that a hollow shaft is stronger and stiffer than a solid shaft of same material
length and weight. (05)
Q.SB. The internal and external diameters of a thick hollow cylinder are 80mm and 120
mm respectively. It is subjected to an extemal pressure of 40 MN/m* and the
internal pressure is 120 MN/m*. Calculate the circumferential stress at the
external and internal surfaces and determine radial stress at mean radius. (05)
Q6. At a point in a strained material the normal stresses fetoss two mutually
perpendicular planes are 75 N/mm? (tensile) and 50 N/mm? (compression). If the
maximum principal stress is to be limited to 81.25 N/mm’, find what shear
stresses that may be permitted on the above planes. Find also the magnitude and
position of the minimum principal stress and also the greatest shear stress. Also
find direct stress and shear stress on plane BF as shown in the Fig. Q. No. 6.
(10)
Q.7A. Find out Euler’s Buckling load for a column with both ends hinged. (05)
Q.7B. During a test on sample of steel bar 25mm diameter, it is found that the pull of 50
KN produced an extension of 0.09Smm on the length of 200mm and a torque of 20
x 10' Nmm produces an angle of twist of 0.9° in a length of 0.25m. Find the
poisson’s ratio for the material, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity.
