Instructions to Candidates:
¾ Answer ANY FIVE full questions.
¾ Use of steam table is permitted.
¾ Assume, CpWater = 4.18kJ/kg. CpSuperheated steam = 2.25kJ/kg.

representation also.
1.C Explain the principle of taper turning by set over method in lathes. 2.5
1.D A flat open belt drive consists of pulleys of diameter 1000mm and 500mm with the
center distance of 1500mm. The coefficient of friction between the pulley and belt is
2.5
0.3. When the maximum tension in the belt is 700N, find the effective pull of the belt
drive.

2.A Two boilers one with superheater and other without superheater one delivering equal 04
quantities of steam in to a common main. The pressure in the boiler and the main is 15
bar. The temperature of the steam from a boiler with a superheater is 3000C and the
temperature of the steam in the main is 2000C. Determine the quality of steam
supplied by the other boiler.

3.A What are the merits and demerits of water tube boiler over fire tube boiler? 03
3.B List the desirable properties of an Ideal lubricant and mention their importance. 02
3.C Explain different types of patterns with neat sketches. 03
3.D A gear train consists of Six spur gears A, B, C, D, E and F and they contain 20, 30,
40, 50, 80, and 100 teeth respectively. Show the gear arrangement of gears to obtain 02
maximum Velocity ratio.

4.A A saturated steam at a pressure of 16 bar is generated in a boiler. Saturated steam 04
leaves the boiler to enter a superheater. Before entering the superheater it losses heat
equal to 600 kJ/kg. And in the superheater, steam is superheated to temperature of
3800 C. If temperature of feed water is 300 C, determine
a) Total heat supplied to feed water in the boiler
b) Dryness fraction of the steam at the entry of superheater.
c) Total heat supplied in the superheater

5.B Draw the theoretical cycle P-V Diagram of a compression ignition engine and label all 02
the process on it.
5.C Two pulleys of equal size are connected by means of an open belt drive. The linear
speed of the belt is 20 m/sec and it transmits 10 kW power. Determine the belt tension
03
on each side of the belt, if the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is
0.25
