What is the importance of deferrals in the novel

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro?

In the novel, the whole story starts with a relationship between 3 friends;
Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. They all grow up together in a boarding school
called Hailsham, where all of them are all clones to later be donors of
organs. In this first part of the book, the term deferrals is introduced by
MIss Lucy but mainly by Madame. This word refers to different qualities
such as love or artistic talent, that grants you a chance to delay the
donation of your organs.

It all starts when this is introduced in Hailsham, but then they go to The
Cottages where Ruth and Tommy request this due to their love, but
they’re declined. The problem is that Kathy H. is also in love of Tommy
but he decides to stay with Ruth and ignore Kathy. That’s one of the
reasons why Kathy in Hailsham, is discovered by Miss Lucy singing to
the pillow as if it was her baby, and she gets her cassette of the song
NVLM confiscated. The main character has done this to show her desire
and necessity of a family structure by demonstrating she also has
emotions and not just a clone like all kids are in that school.

In the second part of the book at the Cottages, Kathy accepts her friends
love, and tries to live with it as much as possible until she then becomes
a carer and loses relationship with them.

Later in the book, after Kathy not knowing nothing about Ruth for 10
years, she by coincidence meets with Ruth while taking care of a donor.
They tell Kathy that her friend had a very difficult second donation, and
that she will probably complete in the third one. When she processes
this, she speaks with Ruth and takes her to meet up with Tommy, who is
also a donor. Once they are all together, Ruth apologises to both Tommy
and Kathy for not letting them be together basically. After that, Kathy and
Tommy demonstrate their love until Ruth completes in her third donation
and Tommy remains sad. This shows the strong feeling Tommy has for
love.
Subsequently, Tommy also completes in one of his donations and Kathy
finally finishes her career as a carer and starts her first donation.

In conclusion, deferrals show a big importance in the novel as it is also

related to love which is a main theme along the whole story as well.
They show an importance to their futures as they’re predetermined to be
donors of their own organs.
