What is an atom?
Atomic Particles
Atoms consist of three basic particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus (center) of the
atom contains the protons (positively charged) and the neutrons (no charge). The outermost regions
of the atom are called electron shells and contain the electrons (negatively charged). Atoms have
different properties based on the arrangement and number of their basic particles.

What is a molecule?
Examples of
Molecules:
REMEMBER: Atom, the smallest unit that matter can be broken down into without releasing any
electrically charged particles. Atoms are also the smallest unit of matter that exhibits the characteristic
properties of an element. While, molecule is a particle made up of two or more atoms that are chemically
bonded together. Very large molecules exist; they are known as macromolecules. An example of a
particularly large macromolecule is DNA, which contains hundreds of billions of atoms.
ACTIVITY 5.1 Tell whether the illustration in each number represent an atom or molecules.
ACTIVITY 5.2 Complete the Venn diagram below by providing information about similarities and
differences between Atoms and Molecules.
