TOPIC: ATOM versus MOLECULES

What is an atom?

 smallest unit into which matter can be divided without

the release of electrically charged particles. It also is the
smallest unit of matter that has the characteristic
properties of a chemical element. As such, the atom is
the basic building block of chemistry.
 smallest unit of matter that retains all of the chemical
properties of an element.

Atomic Particles

 Atoms consist of three basic particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus (center) of the
atom contains the protons (positively charged) and the neutrons (no charge). The outermost regions
of the atom are called electron shells and contain the electrons (negatively charged). Atoms have
different properties based on the arrangement and number of their basic particles.
Subatomic Particles Properties
Particl Symbo Location Charge Mass Actual mass, grams
e l
electron e- Electron clouds/ -1 1/1 840 approx 0 9.109 x 10 -28
orbitals
Proton p+ nucleus +1 1 1.672 x 10 -24
neutron n0 nucleus 0 1 1.675 x 10 -24

What is a molecule?

 Molecules is a larger particle formed by combination of two or more atoms.

For example, water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms that have
combined to form water molecules. Water is a molecule; it is made up of one
oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms
 Atoms combine to form molecules, which then interact to form solids, gases, or liquids. Many
biological processes are devoted to breaking down molecules into their component atoms so they
can be reassembled into a more useful molecule.

Molecules:

Phosphorus – P Carbon Dioxide -- CO2
Sulphur – S Table Salt - NaCl
Hydrogen – H Water – H2O

Elements elements

REMEMBER: Atom, the smallest unit that matter can be broken down into without releasing any
electrically charged particles. Atoms are also the smallest unit of matter that exhibits the characteristic
properties of an element. While, molecule is a particle made up of two or more atoms that are chemically
bonded together. Very large molecules exist; they are known as macromolecules. An example of a
particularly large macromolecule is DNA, which contains hundreds of billions of atoms.
