• What is the name of canal?


• Where does it start?
• What direction does it go?

Carotid canal
• Starts in the inferior surface of petromastoid
part at the opening of the carotid canal.
• Goes upward and toward to the middle cranial
fossa.
• Ends at the internal carotid foramen.
• Contains internal carotid artery.
Caroticotympanic canals
• Starts at the wall of the carotid canal near the
opening of the carotid canal
• Goes to tympanic cavity
• Ends at the tympanic cavity anterior wall
• Contains blood vessels and nerves supplying
tympanic cavity
Facial nerve canal
• Starts at the inferior wall of the internal
auditory meatus
• Goes lateral to tympanic cavity, then goes
down forming the prominence of the facial
canal
• Ends at stylomastoid foramen
• Contains Facial nerve
Chordae tympani canal
• Starts proximally stylomasoid foramen of
facial nerve canal
• Goes forward through tympanic cavity
• Ends at the petrotympanic fissure
• Contains chorda tympani nerve
Bony part of auditory tube (canalis
musculotubarius)
• Starts at the apex of the petromastoid part
lateral to the carotid canal
• Goes to tympanic cavity
• Ends at the anterior wall of tympanic cavity
• Contains tensor tympani muscle and this canal
is bony part of the auditory tube
Mastoid canal
• Starts at the jugular fossa
• Goes lateral
• Ends at the tympanomostoid fissure (auricular
fissure)
• Contains the branch of the nervus vagus
Tympanic canal
• Starts between opening of the carotid canal
and jugular fossa (fossula petrosa)
• Goes upward to tympanic cavity and then to
the middle cranial fossa
• Ends at minor petrosus nerve hiatus
• Contains minor petrosus nerve
Ethmoid bone
