NANOTECHNOLOGY

1. What is Nanotechnology?
ʯ Nanotechnology or nanotech is the use of matter on an atomic, molecular,
and supramolecular scale for industrial purposes.

ʯ Nanoparticle: 1 nm = 10-9 m.

ʯ Generally speaking nanotechnology improves existing industrial processes.

ʯ Used across many different sectors: Nanofibers (in fabric), Energy and
environment, etc.

ʯ Many everyday products are already made using nanotechnology such

as sunscreen or waterproof clothing.
NANOTECHNOLOGY

2. History of Nanotechnology
ʯ Nanoparticles found in Ming dynasty pottery.

ʯ The origins of nanotechnology did not occur until 1959 – Richard Feynman.

ʯ In 1974, Norio Taniguchi introduced the term nanotechnology.

ʯ Breakthrough in the past few decades.

NANOTECHNOLOGY

3. Nanotechnology in the
Czech Republic
ʯ Nanotechnology the Czech Republic has been used since the 1980´s.

ʯ Major milestone came in 2003 – Company Elmarco.

ʯ Nowadays, nanotechnology has a strong position in the Czech Republic.

NANOTECHNOLOGY

4. The use of nanotechnology in Interior

Design and Architecture
ʯ Although nanotechnology is a very technical solution, there are only a few companies in the Czech Republic
that have used it and incorporated it into architecture and interior design.

ʯ Thanks to nanotechnology, windows clean themselves, tiles might resist build up of soap scum, etc.

ʯ If applied to interior decoration — for example nanoscale paint (nanocoating), nanomaterials will bring
changes to interior decoration.
NANOCOATING

5. What is nanocoating?
ʯ A process of applying a surface layer.

ʯ Very thin optically transparent polymer film.

ʯ Used in glass industry to give glass components a new metal finish,

reflection and unique look.

ʯ Allows a huge variety of colour finishes.

ʯ Provides many different options in terms of transparency of the colour, as

well as gradient possibilities that are pushing the boundaries even further.

ʯ Applies a level of protection that lasts for years.

NANOCOATING

6. Benefits
ʯ Added value to glass (reflection, colour, gloss) ʯ Surface cleans “itself“ (suitable for hotels)

ʯ Non-traditional surface treatment (blends heritage with ʯ Resistant to temperature changes

the latest technologies)
ʯ Humidity proof
ʯ Long durability (cruises, yachts, etc.)
ʯ Low carbon footprint
ʯ Large scale of transparency
NANOCOATING

7. Risks
ʯ Requires very strict working conditions
– working equipment has to be perfectly
clean, dust and scratch free.

ʯ Quick deterioration unless lacquered with

polymer after nanocoating.

ʯ Only TOP companies in different industries are

using such a technology, experience required.
NANOCOATING

8. Description of
nanocoating process
Magnetron nanocoating:

1. Product is placed in a nanocoating machine.

2. Air is sucked out which creates a vacuum.

3. Strong magnetic field is switched on and the magnetron plate

in the machine starts slowly releasing metal nanoparticles that
get attached to the product.

4. The magnetron plate inside the machine is replacable. If we put

a plate of stainless steel we will get silver nanocoating. Brass
gives us gold, titanium gives us blue, copper gives us rosegold…

5. The strength of the nanocoating is determined by how long we

leave the product inside.

NANOCOATING

9. Current Research
Currently conducting multiple different research with a few different
Czech Technical Universities.

 We focus on:

1. Salinity

2. New power transmission

3. The usage of nanocoating products in extreme conditions such

as under water (long term research)

4. Properties like flame resistance, UV stability, gloss retention

5. Nanocoating other material such as borosilicate glass or acrylic

NANOCOATING

10. Alternatives
Certain alternatives exist, however nanocoating offers by
far the most advantages.

Silvering – however only used for painting of the interior

of the components.

Other types of varnish/paint possible however it creates

a “plastic“ look and covers the texture of the glass, as
well as the engraving parts.

Alternatives are often too thick and very prone to peel.

NANOCOATING

11. Cleaning
ʯ Perfectly smooth surface.

ʯ No need to clean finger prints as nanocoated

components get lacquered with a polymer
ingredient after being nanocoated (prevents from
leaving finger prints on the surface).

ʯ Automatic dust prevention (minimum of dust gets

trapped on the component).

ʯ When cleaning, no chemicals are used – only water

and duster recommended.
NANOCOATING

12. Impact on the Environment

ʯ Basically zero impact on the environment, extremely environmentally friendly technology.

ʯ Leaves almost no waste, only power consumption.

ʯ Small amount of waste in case of partial nanocoating – small amount of plastic to be recycled.

ʯ Power supply can also come from renewable sources such as electrical panels.
NANOCOATING

13. Health and Safety

ʯ Extremely safe process but strong experience needed.

ʯ Replacing the metal plate provides no health risks.

ʯ After the nanocoating process is done, the temperature

in the machine is 80 degrees – completely safe to take
the components out very soon after the process.

ʯ No need for safety glasses, only gloves necessary.
