IMPORTANCE OF FRESH CONCRETE

Fresh Concrete has a tendency to crack and preventative measures at the time of
placing and curing remain the best means of minimizing cracking. While most
type of cracks do not affect structural stability, all cracks are unsightly and in
extreme cases it can reduce the use and serviceability of the structure.

In HOT weather, instances of plastic shrinkage cracking are observed,

particularly where proper care in placing and curing of concrete is not taken. It
mainly occurs in unfavorable ambient weather i.e high temperatures, LOWER
HUMIDITY and / or WINDY conditions. In structures like slabs and flooring, rapid
early drying and evaporation of water from concrete induces shrinkage and
consequently, cracking on the surface. Further delay in curing would widen and
deepen such cracks thereby causing leakages through slabs.

PREVENTIVE MEASURE TO REDUCE AND CONTROL CRACK IN CONCRETE

▪ After Placing the concrete do not allow concrete to DRY, START CURING AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE
▪ During Summer, consider early morning or evening placement schedule to avoid
higher mid-day temperature.
▪ Ensure Properly constructed and braced formwork.
▪ Moisten the formwork and reinforcement to prevent moisture loss.
▪ Erect sunshade to reduce concrete surface temperatures.
▪ Arrange Wind breaks to reduce wind speed over the concrete slabs.
▪ Arrange adequate manpower to place, compact, finish and cure the concrete without
any delays.
▪ Do not add water to ready mixed concrete before and during placing / finishing.
▪ Compact concrete, particularly low slump mixes, adequately
▪ Provide sufficient Contraction joints to allow for shrinkage.
▪ Protect concrete during any appreciable delay between placing and Finishing.
▪ Float properly after placing the concrete.
▪ Start Sprinkling / Misting concrete surfaces (Care must be taken not to use high
pressure hose pipe to sprinkle, they may damage the surface/wash away cement
particles)
▪ Ensure appropriate and adequate curing under all circumstances.
