Ek is 'n Afrikaan is die titel van 'n toespraak deur Thabo Mbeki, namens die African National Congress

in Kaapstad,
op 8 Mei 1996 gelewer tydens die aanvaarding van die Grondwetsontwerp van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika. Mbeki
was die adjunkpresident van Suid-Afrika, en het in hierdie amp gedien onder pres. Nelson Mandela. Mbeki se
reputasie was as gevolg van die toespraak gevestig as dié van 'n politieke redenaar vergelykbaar met Martin Luther
King jr. In 2013, het oud-president Frederik Willem de Klerk, in Den Haag tydens die 12de Europese lesing sy eie
weergawe van die "Ek is 'n Afrikaan" toespraak gelewer: “My voorvaders was Hugenote uit Frankryk wat in 1688 via
Holland na Suid-Afrika toe gekom het ... My kultuur, soos die kulture van so baie mense dwarsoor die wêreld, is
deurtrek met ongeëwenaarde literatuur, kuns en musiek uit Europa. En steeds is ek 'n Afrikaan. ... Ek streef daarna
om sy belange in verhouding met die res van die wêreld te bevorder, en ek ondersteun sy sportspanne wanneer
hulle spanne van ander kontinente aandurf."
• Voorsitter,
Gewaardeerde president van die Demokratiese Republiek,
Agbare lede van die Grondwetlike Vergadering,
Ons onderskeie binnelandse en buitelandse gaste,
Vriende,
• Op 'n geleentheid soos hierdie, moet ons dalk by die begin begin. So, laat ek begin: Ek is 'n Afrikaan.
• Ek het my bestaan te danke aan die heuwels en die valleie, die berge en die ooptes, die riviere, die woestyne, die
bome, die blomme, die see en die ewigveranderende seisoene wat die aansig van ons eie land definieer.
• My liggaam het al gevries in ons ryp en in ons onlangse sneeu. Dit het ontdooi in die warmte van ons sonskyn en
gesmelt in die hitte van die middagson. Die kraak en die gerammel van die somerdonderslae, en die klap van
onverwagte weerlig, was al die oorsaak van beide bewing en van hoop.
• Die geure van die natuur was al so goed vir ons soos die aansig van die wilde blomme, die burgers van die veld.
• Die dramatiese vorms van die Drakensberge, die grondkleurige water van die Lekoa, iGqili en Thukela en die sand
van die Kgalagadi, is als panele op die stel van die natuurlike verhoog waarop ons die dwase dade van die teater van
ons dag uitvoer.
• Met tye, en in vrees, wonder ek of ek gelyke burgerskap van ons land moet toegee aan die luiperd asook die leeu,
die olifant asook die springbokke, die hiëna, die swart mamba en ook die verpeslike muskiet.
• Met menslike teenwoordigheid onder al hierdie, 'n kenmerk op die gesig van ons dus gedefinieerde geboorteland,
weet ek dat niemand my durf uitdaag wanneer ek sê ek is 'n Afrikaan nie!
• My bestaan is ek verskuldig aan die Khoi en die San, wie se troostelose siele op die weide platteland van die
pragtige Kaap spook; hulle wat die slagoffers was van die mees genadelose volksmoord wat ons land nog ooit gesien
het, hulle wat eerste was om hul lewens te verloor in die vryheidstryd om ons afhanklikheid te verdedig, en hulle wat
as 'n volk uitgewis is as resultaat.
• Vandag, as 'n land, behou ons maar 'n hoorbare stilte oor hierdie voorouers van generasies wat nog lewe, bang om
die gruwel van 'n vorige daad te erken, en opsoek na die uitwissing van hierdie wrede gebeurtenis in ons
herinneringe, 'n gebeurtenis wat deur voortbestaan as geheue ons eintlik moet leer om nooit weer onmenslik te
wees nie.
• Vanuit die emigrante wat Europa verlaat het om 'n nuwe tuiste in hierdie moederland te vind, is ek gevorm.
Ongeag hul optrede, bly hul steeds 'n deel van my.
• In my are vloei die bloed van die Maleierslawe wat uit die Ooste gekom het. Hul trotse menswaardigheid gee my
rigting in my lewe, hul kultuur vorm deel van my wese.
• Die strepe wat hulle op hul liggame vertoon van die slawedrywer se sambok, is 'n herinnering geëts op my
bewussyn van dit wat nie gedoen moet word nie.
• Ek is die kleinkind van die vegtermans en -vroue wat deur Hintsa en Sekhukhune gelei is, die patriotte wat
Cetshwayo en Mphephu gelei het op die veggrond, die soldate wat deur Moshoeshoe en Ngungunyane geleer is om
nooit die rede vir vryheid te verag nie.
• My verstand asook kennis van myself is gevorm deur die oorwinnings wat die juwele in ons Afrikakroon is, die
oorwinnings wat ons verdien het tussen Isandhlwana en Khartoem, as Ethiopiërs en as die Ashanti van Ghana, en as
die Berbers van die woestyn.
• Ek is die kleinkind wat vars blomme plaas op die Boeregrafte by St Helena en by die Vrouemonument, wat sien
deur die siel se oog, en die lyding ervaar van 'n eenvoudige landbewoner, dood, konsentrasiekampe, verwoeste
wonings, 'n droom in ruïnes.
• Ek is die kind van Nongqawuse. Ek is die een wat dit moontlik gemaak het om wêreldwyd handel te dryf in
diamante, goud, in dieselfde kos waarna ons eie mage smag.
• Ek kom van diegene wat vervoer is vanaf Indië en China, wie se bestaan uitsluitlik verbind was aan die feit dat hul
in staat was om fisiese arbeid te voorsien, wat my geleer het dat ons terselfdertyd plaaslik asook buitelands kon
wees, wat my geleer het dat die menslike bestaan self daarop berus dat vryheid 'n noodsaaklike voorwaarde is vir
menslike bestaan.
• Om deel te wees van al hierdie mense, en wetende dat niemand hierdie bewering durf betwis nie, sal ek eis dat ek
'n Afrikaan is.
• Ek het gesien hoe ons land homself uitmekaar skeur soos hulle, wat almal my mense is, mekaar aanval in 'n
titaniese stryd, die een om regstelling van 'n verkeerde daad wat gepleeg is deur die een teen die ander, en die
ander party wat poog om die onverdedigbare te verdedig.
• Ek het gesien wat gebeur wanneer een persoon oor 'n oormag van mag oor 'n ander beskik, wanneer die sterkere
besluit om selfs die gegewe dat God alle mense na Sy eie beeld geskep het, te misken.
• Ek weet wat dit beteken wanneer ras en kleur gebruik word om te bepaal wie menslik is en wie sub-menslik.
• Ek het die vernietiging van alle gevoelens van eiewaarde gesien, die gevolge van strewe om te wees wat 'n mens
nie is nie, net om 'n paar van die voordele te bekom wat diegene wat hulself as meesters voordoen, verseker
hulleself geniet.
• Ek het ondervinding van die situasie waarin ras en kleur gebruik is om 'n paar te verryk, en die res te verarm.
• Ek het die korrupsie van beide gedagtes en siele gesien, as resultaat van die nastrewing na 'n veragtelike poging
om 'n ware misdaad te pleeg teen die mensdom.
• Ek het al die konkrete uitdrukking van die ontkenning van menswaardigheid gesien, wat ontaard uit die bewuste,
sistemiese en sistematiese onderdrukking en onderdrukkende aktiwiteite van ander mense.
• Daar paradeer die slagoffers met geen maskers om die wrede werklikheid te verberg nie; die bedelaars, die
prostitute, die straatkinders, diegene wat troos soek in dwelmmisbruik, diegene wat steel om honger te sus, diegene
wat hul verstand verloor want om van gesonde verstand te wees beteken mos maar net dieselfde as om pyn uit te
lok.
•Miskien is wat die ergste is onder hierdie, wat my volk is, diegene wat geleer het om te moor teen vergoeding. Vir
hul is die omvang van die dood in direkte verhouding tot hul persoonlike welsyn.
• En so, soos pionne in die diens van waansinnige siele, maak hul dood ter bevordering van die politieke geweld in
KwaZulu-Natal. Hulle vermoor die onskuldiges in die taxi-oorloë.
• Hulle maak dood, vinnig of stadig, bloot vir wins uit die onwettige dwelmhandel. Hulle diens is te huur wanneer 'n
man sy vrou wil vermoor, of 'n vrou haar man.
• Onder ons skuil die produkte van ons immorele en amorele verlede: moordenaars wat geen sin het vir die waarde
van menslike lewe, verkragters met absolute minagting vir die vroue van ons land, diere wat poog om voordeel te
trek uit die kwesbaarheid van jong kinders, die gestremdes en die verouderdes, die rowers wat geen hindernis duld
in hul soeke na selfverryking nie.
• Al hierdie ken ek, en weet ek is waar, omdat ek self 'n Afrikaan is!
• As gevolg van hierdie, is ek in staat om 'n fundamentele waarheid te spreek: dat ek gebore is van 'n volk bestaande
uit helde en heldinne.
• Ek is gebore uit 'n volk wat nie onderdrukking sal verdra nie. Ek is vanuit 'n nasie wat nie sal toelaat dat vrees vir
die dood, marteling, tronkstraf, verbanning of vervolging sal lei tot die pleeg van onregmatighede nie.
• Die groot massas, as beide ons ma en pa, sal nie toelaat dat die gedrag van die minderheid ontaard in die
beskrywing van ons land, en ons mense, as barbaars nie.
•Geduldig, bloot omdat geskiedenis aan hul kant is, sal die massas nie aan wanhoop klou net omdat die weer dalk
sleg is vandag nie. Ook sal hul nie sommer triomfeer wanneer die son môre weer skyn nie.
• Wat ook al die omstandighede waardeur hul is en as gevolg van die ervarings wat hul beleef het, is hul vasbeslote
om vir hulself te definieer wie hulle is en wat hulle behoort te wees.
• Ons is vandag hier vergader om hul oorwinning in die verkryging asook gebruik van hul reg om hul eie definisie te
formuleer van wat dit beteken om 'n Afrikaan te wees.
• Die Grondwet, waarvan ons die aanvaarding vandag vier, maak uit en verklaar, ondubbelsinnig, dat ons weier om
te aanvaar dat ons Afrikaan-wese omskryf moet word deur ons ras, kleur, of geslag van historiese oorsprong.
• Dit is 'n ferm bewering wat deur onsself gemaak word wat sê dat Suid-Afrika aan almal behoort wat daarin woon,
swart en wit.
• Dit gee konkrete uitdrukking aan die sentiment wat ons deel as Afrikane, en wat ons sal verdedig tot die dood, dat
die volk sal regeer.
• Dit erken die feit dat die menswaardigheid van die individu 'n teiken is waarna ons samelewing moet streef, net
soos dit 'n doel is wat nie kan geskei word van die materiële welsyn van die individu nie.
• Dit poog om die situasie te skep waarin al ons mense vry is van vrees, insluitende die vrees van onderdrukking
uitgeoefen deur een nasionale groep oor 'n ander, die vrees van ontmagtiging deur een sosiale echelon oor 'n ander,
die vrees van die gebruik van staatsmag om enigiemand te ontken van hul fundamentele menseregte en ook vryheid
van die vrees van tirannie.
• Dit het ten doel om die deure oop te maak sodat diegene wat benadeel is hul plek in die samelewing kan aanvaar
as gelykes met hul medemens, sonder die inagneming van kleur, ras, geslag, ouderdom of geografiese verspreiding.
• Dit bied die geleentheid aan elke een en aan almal om hul opinies te verklaar en hul menings te bevorder, om te
beywer vir die implementering daarvan in die proses van regering sonder die vrees dat 'n teenoorgestelde mening
ontmoet sal word met onderdrukking.
• Dit skep 'n wetsgereguleerde samelewing wat skadelik sal wees vir arbitrêre regering. Dit veronderstel die
oplossing van konflikte op vreedsame wyse, eerder as om onderdrukking of intimidasie af te dwing.
• Dit juig in die diversiteit van ons mense, en skep die ruimte vir ons almal om vrywillig onsself as een volk te
definieer.
• As 'n Afrikaan, is dit 'n prestasie waarop ek trots is, trots sonder voorbehoud en trots sonder enige gevoel van
selfbewondering.
• Ons gevoel van hoogte in hierdie oomblik put ook uit die feit dat hierdie pragtige produk die unieke skepping is van
Afrikane hande en Afrikane gedagtes.
• Maar dit is ook 'n huldeblyk aan ons verlies van nietigheid, wat ons kan, ten spyte van die versoeking om onsself te
behandel as 'n uitsonderlike fragment van die mensdom, teken op die opgehoopte ondervinding en wysheid van die
hele mensdom, om te definieer vir onsself wat ons wil wees.
• Saam met die beste in die wêreld, is ons ook geneig aan kleinlikheid, prikkelbaarheid, selfsug en kortsigtigheid.
• Maar dit lyk asof dinge so gebeur het dat ons na onsself gekyk het en gesê het: die tyd het aangebreek vir ons om
'n supermenslike poging aan te pak en als behalwe mens te wees, om te reageer op die oproep om vir onsself 'n
glorieryke toekoms te skep, om onsself te herinner aan die Latynse slagspreuk: Gloria est consequenda Glorie moet
na gestrewe word!
• Vandag voel dit goed om 'n Afrikaan te wees.
• Dit voel goed omdat ek hier kan staan as 'n Suid-Afrikaner en as voetsoldaat van 'n titaniese Afrikaweermag, die
African National Congres, om aan al die partye vandag hier verteenwoordig, en aan die miljoene wat hul insette
gelewer het in die prosesse wat ons tans afsluit, aan ons uitstaande landgenote wat omgesien het na die geboorte
van ons stigtingsdokument, die onderhandelaars wat hul hande in hul hare gehad het, die een teen die ander, die
onsigbare sterre wat onsigbaar geskyn het as bestuur en administrasie van die Grondwetlike Vergadering, die
adviseurs, kundiges en promotors, aan die massakommunikasiemedia, aan ons vriende oor die hele wêreld heen, te
kan sê: Baie geluk en welgedaan!
• Ek is 'n Afrikaan. Ek is gebore uit die volke van die vasteland van Afrika.
• Die pyn van die gewelddadige konflik wat die mense van Liberië, Somalië, Soedan, Burundi en Algerië ervaar, is 'n
pyn wat ek ook dra.
• Die droewige skande van armoede, lyding en menslike agteruitgang van my kontinent is 'n smart wat ons almal
deel.
• Die demper op ons geluk wat afgelei word hiervan, en van ons swerwe tot op die buiterand van menslike orde, laat
ons in 'n aanhoudende skadu van wanhoop. Dit is 'n wrede pad wat niemand se lot behoort te wees nie.
• Hierdie handeling wat ons vandag geneem het, in hierdie klein hoek van 'n groot kontinent wat so beslissend
bygedra het tot die ontwikkeling van die mensdom, sê dat Afrika herbevestig dat hy voortgaan met sy opstanding
vanuit die ashoop.
• Wat ook al die terugslae van die oomblik, niks kan ons nou stop nie! Wat ook al die probleme, Afrika sal in vrede
voortbestaan!
• Maak nie saak hoe onwaarskynlik dit mag klink aan die skeptici, Afrika sal welvarend wees!
• Wie ook al ons kan wees, ongeag ons onmiddellike belang, maak nie saak hoeveel bagasie ons dra uit ons verlede,
maak nie saak die mate waartoe ons gevange was in die mode van sinisme of die verlies van geloof in die vermoë
van die mense, laat ons vandag juig en sê niks kan ons nou stop nie!

I am an African is the title of a speech delivered by Thabo Mbeki, on behalf of the African National Congress in
Cape Town, on 8 May 1996 during the adoption of the draft Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Mbeki was
the deputy president of South Africa, and served in this office under pres. Nelson Mandela. As a result of the speech,
Mbeki's reputation was established as that of a political orator comparable to Martin Luther King Jr In 2013, ex-
president Frederik Willem de Klerk, in The Hague during the 12th European lecture, delivered his own version of the
"I am an African" speech: "My ancestors were Huguenots from France who in 1688 via Holland to South came to
Africa... My culture, like the cultures of so many people across the world, is steeped in unparalleled literature, art
and music from Europe. And still I am an African. ... I strive to promote its interests in relation to the rest of the
world, and I support its sports teams when they face teams from other continents."

Dear President of the Democratic Republic,
Honorable members of the Constitutional Assembly,
Our respective domestic and foreign guests,
Friends,
• On an occasion like this, we may have to start at the beginning. So, let me start: I am an African.
• I owe my existence to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the plains, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the
flowers, the sea and the ever-changing seasons that define the face of our own country.
• My body has already frozen in our frost and in our recent snow. It thawed in the warmth of our sunshine and
melted in the heat of the midday sun. The crack and rattle of summer thunder, and the crack of unexpected
lightning, were the cause both of trembling and of hope.
• The scents of nature have been as good to us as the sight of the wild flowers, the citizens of the field.
• The dramatic forms of the Drakensberg, the earth-colored water of the Lekoa, iGqili and Thukela and the sand of
the Kgalagadi, are like panels on the set of the natural stage on which we perform the foolish acts of the theater of
our day.
• At times, and in fear, I wonder if I should concede equal citizenship of our country to the leopard as well as the
lion, the elephant as well as the springbok, the hyena, the black mamba and also the pesky mosquito.
• With human presence among all these, a feature on the face of our thus defined native land, I know that no one
dares challenge me when I say I am an African!
• I owe my existence to the Khoi and the San, whose despondent souls haunt the open countryside of the beautiful
Cape; those who were the victims of the most merciless genocide our country has ever seen, those who were first to
lose their lives in the freedom struggle to defend our dependence, and those who were wiped out as a people as a
result.
• Today, as a country, we maintain an audible silence about these ancestors of generations still living, afraid to admit
the horror of a past act, and seek the erasure of this cruel event in our memories,' an event that, by continuing to
exist as a memory, we must actually learn to never be inhuman again.
• From the emigrants who left Europe to find a new home in this motherland, I was formed. Regardless of their
actions, they still remain a part of me.
• In my veins flows the blood of the Malay slaves who came from the East. Their proud human dignity gives me
direction in my life, their culture forms part of my being.
• The stripes they show on their bodies from the slave driver's sambok are a reminder etched on my consciousness
of what should not be done.
• I am the grandchild of the warrior men and women who were led by Hintsa and Sekhukhune, the patriots who led
Cetshwayo and Mphephu on the battlefield, the soldiers who were taught by Moshoeshoe and Ngungunyane never
to despise the cause of freedom.
• My mind as well as knowledge of myself was shaped by the victories that are the jewels in our African crown, the
victories we earned between Isandhlwana and Khartoum, as Ethiopians and as the Ashanti of Ghana, and as the
Berbers of the desert.
• I am the grandchild who places fresh flowers on the Peasants' graves at St Helena and at the Women's Monument,
who sees through the soul's eye, and experiences the suffering of a simple country dweller, death, concentration
camps, ruined homes, a dream in ruins .
• I am the child of Nongqawuse. I am the one who made it possible to trade worldwide in diamonds, gold, in the
same food that our own stomachs crave.
• I come from those who were transported from India and China, whose existence was solely connected to the fact
that they were able to provide physical labor, which taught me that we could be local as well as foreign at the same
time, which taught me that the human existence itself rests on the fact that freedom is a necessary condition for
human existence.
• Being part of all these people, and knowing that no one dares to challenge this claim, I will claim to be an African.
• I have seen our country tear itself apart as they, who are all my people, attack each other in a titanic struggle, the
one for righting a wrong done by one against the other, and the other party which seeks to defend the indefensible.
• I have seen what happens when one person has a preponderance of power over another, when the stronger
decides to ignore even the fact that God created all people in His own image.
• I know what it means when race and color are used to define who is human and who is sub-human.
• I have seen the destruction of all feelings of self-worth, the consequences of striving to be what one is not, just to
obtain some of the advantages that those who pretend to be masters ensure themselves enjoy.
• I have experience of the situation in which race and color have been used to enrich a few, and impoverish the rest.
• I saw the corruption of both minds and souls, as a result of the pursuit of a despicable attempt to commit a true
crime against humanity.
• I have already seen the concrete expression of the denial of human dignity, which degenerates from the conscious,
systemic and systematic oppression and oppressive activities of other people.
• There the victims parade with no masks to hide the cruel reality; the beggars, the prostitutes, the street children,
those who seek solace in drug abuse, those who steal to satisfy hunger, those who lose their minds because being
sane means only the same as causing pain.
•Perhaps the worst among these, who are my people, are those who have learned to kill for compensation. For
them, the magnitude of death is in direct proportion to their personal well-being.
• And so, like pawns in the service of insane souls, they kill to further the political violence in KwaZulu-Natal. They kill
the innocent in the taxi wars.
• They kill, quickly or slowly, simply for profit from the illegal drug trade. Their service is for hire when a man wants
to kill his wife, or a woman her husband.
• Beneath us lie the products of our immoral and amoral past: murderers who have no sense of the value of human
life, rapists with absolute contempt for the women of our country, animals who seek to profit from the vulnerability
of young children, the disabled and the aged, the robbers who tolerate no obstacle in their quest for self-
enrichment.
• All these I know, and know I am true, because I myself am an African!
• Because of this, I am able to speak a fundamental truth: that I was born to a people made up of heroes and
heroines.
• I was born of a people who will not tolerate oppression. I am from a nation that will not allow fear of death,
torture, imprisonment, exile or persecution to lead to wrongdoing.
• The great masses, as both our mother and father, will not allow the behavior of the minority to degenerate into
the description of our country, and our people, as barbaric.
•Patient, simply because history is on their side, the masses will not cling to despair just because the weather may
be bad today. Nor will they simply triumph when the sun shines again tomorrow.
• Whatever the circumstances they have been through and as a result of the experiences they have had, they are
determined to define for themselves who they are and what they should be.
• We are gathered here today for their victory in obtaining as well as exercising their right to formulate their own
definition of what it means to be an African.
• The Constitution, the adoption of which we celebrate today, constitutes and declares, unequivocally, that we
refuse to accept that our Africanness should be defined by our race, color, or gender of historical origin.
• It is a firm assertion made by ourselves that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white.
• It gives concrete expression to the sentiment we share as Africans, and which we will defend to the death, that the
people will rule.
• It recognizes the fact that the human dignity of the individual is a target towards which our society must strive, just
as it is a goal that cannot be separated from the material welfare of the individual.
• It seeks to create the situation in which all our people are free from fear, including the fear of oppression exercised
by one national group over another, the fear of disempowerment by one social echelon over another, the fear of the
use of state power to deny anyone of their fundamental human rights and also freedom from the fear of tyranny.
• It aims to open the doors so that those who are disadvantaged can accept their place in society as equals with their
fellow human beings, without regard to color, race, sex, age or geographical distribution.
• It offers the opportunity to each and everyone to declare their opinions and promote their opinions, to strive for
their implementation in the process of government without the fear that an opposing opinion will be met with
repression.
• It creates a law-governed society that will be harmful to arbitrary government. It presupposes the resolution of
conflicts by peaceful means, rather than imposing oppression or intimidation.
• It rejoices in the diversity of our people, and creates the space for all of us to voluntarily define ourselves as one
people.
• As an African, this is an achievement I am proud of, proud without reservation and proud without any sense of self-
admiration.
• Our sense of height in this moment also derives from the fact that this beautiful product is the unique creation of
African hands and African minds.
• But it is also a tribute to our loss of vanity, that we can, despite the temptation to treat ourselves as an exceptional
fragment of humanity, draw on the accumulated experience and wisdom of all humanity, to define for ourselves
what we want to be.
• Along with the best in the world, we are also prone to pettiness, irritability, selfishness and short-sightedness.
• But things seem to have happened in such a way that we looked at ourselves and said: the time has come for us to
undertake a superhuman effort and be anything but human, to respond to the call to give ourselves ' to create a
glorious future, to remind ourselves of the Latin slogan: Gloria est consequenda Glory must be pursued!
• Today it feels good to be an African.
• It feels good because I can stand here as a South African and as a foot soldier of a titanic African army, the African
National Congress, to represent all the parties here today, and to the millions who gave their input in the processes
which we now conclude, to our outstanding compatriots who looked after the birth of our founding document, the
negotiators who had their hands in their hair, one against the other, the invisible stars who shone invisibly as
management and administration of the Constitutional Assembly, the advisors, experts and promoters, to the mass
communication media, to our friends all over the world, to be able to say: Congratulations and well done!
• I am an African. I was born from the peoples of the continent of Africa.
