Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of Hip- Hop and Freestyle
move in modern dance.

Performance Standard: The learner will demonstrate proficiency in hip-hop and freestyle
dance techniques through an activity that showcases the different dance moves and dance
styles.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

 Define what is Hip- hop and Freestyle move.


 Realize that Hip-hop and Freestyle dances are effective and vibrant tools
for empowering a person to express his/her ideas, and advocacies, through
the different dance styles and choreography.
 Create their own dance choreography with the different dance styles and
techniques.

“Before we dig deeper in our lesson, it is important


for you to know the objectives of our lesson today for
us to be guided.”

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

2. Hip-Hop

History of Hip-hop:
Hip- first used in the African American Vernacular
English culture which means informed or current.
Hop- came from a rapper named Robert Keith
“Cowboy” Wiggins who was in the US Army who used
to rap the words hip-hop-hip-hop while mimicking
the sequence of the marching soldiers which later
became hip-hop into stage performances.

Artists performed the dance with disco goers with


new kind of DJ music and they call the dancers hip-
hoppers. The DJ’s used rhythmic beats by looping
accompanied by “rapping”. Which was later known as
beatboxing.

Hip-hop became popular in other countries which


also connected with graffiti craze. These art forms
not just showcase talents, but they also express social
issues, political issues, ideas, as well as advocacies.

3. Subgenre/Dance Styles

either quickly or slowly depending on the
dance.

 Locking- This consists of a series of


movements that involves quick action. It is
similar to locking one part of your body into
another position then freezing it in the last
position. The dancers of this style are
commonly called lockers.

 Breaking- This is also known as break dancing.
Dancers are called b-boying and b-girling or
breakers. This has movements to be
performed in different levels such as:
- Toprock- standing while performing.
- Downrock- when dancers are close to
the floor.
- Power moves- when dancers are doing
acrobatics.
- Freezing- when you freeze while posing.

 Whacking or waacking- The performer uses


his or her upper body and arms. “Waack”is a
strong swinging or sweeping of arms in
dramatic rapid way, creating movements like a
“human hummingbird.”

 Vogue or voguing- This became popular in


1980s in the East Coast in the United States.
This movement imitates the perfect lines and
poses of models as depicted in fashion
magazines such as Vogue, where the dance
got its name. Dancers are called voguer.

4. Freestyle move: when you do the moves on


the spot without practice.
 Street dance-
-Started as freestyle form of movement
performed in the streets or any open spaces
accompanied by upbeat music.
- used to describe self-styled dances which
include improvisations and social dances. It
encourages the public to interact and dance
with the performers.

Question:
 What is the difference between freestyle and hip-hop?
 How can hip-hop and freestyle help in vocalizing your thoughts
and issues in a powerful way?
 What are the social issues or political issues will you show in
your choreography?
VI. Assignment

 You must create your own choreography with the different dance
styles with your group. This will be preparation for your Scaffold
activity to be presented this Friday.
 The Presentation must be 2-3 mins only.
