GENERAL BACKGROUND

Cotton as a crop it is depended upon by almost 40% of the population direct or indirect and it is one of
the key cash crop in the country for poverty eradication

Cotton farming in Tanzania is small holder based and has a production range from 350000to 600000 per
annum

Tanzanian average yield is 285kg/ha while the global average yield is 738kg/ha compared to the world
standards, the low productivity is due to poor quality seed and poor plant spacing by famers

TANZANIAN NUTRITION CONTEXT

The government has developed plans and programs that address the issue of food and nutrition security
an example is the Tanzania food security investmesnt plan (TAFSIP) .apart from plans and programs
Tanzania also recorgnized that sustainable food and nutrition security requires well strengthened early
system to provide reliable and timely data food and nutritional security and surveillance

The ultimate goal of the government has been to attain acces to adequate food to all people all year
long

Tanzania food basket comprises of several food staples from cereals to roots and tubers

PROBLEMS AND ISSUES NEED TO BE ADRESSED

Cotton is only smallholder based

Lack of attainment of stable markets by cotton farmers

Cotton farmers lack enough capital to invest in agriculture

Low cotton yield in Tanzania

PROJECT LOGICAL FRAMEWORK

The goal of the project is to support small scale cotton producers in the production ,distribution of by
products and associated food crops in order to contribute to uncreased income and improve food and
nutrition

Forseen result of the project

Validation of model for production, value addition and commercialization of cotton and its by
products(first result)

this result will be attained by starting with the increase in availability of improved cotton seeds(first
product of the result project ), in doing this it alleviates the problem of using poor seeds in production
as it was stated in the background where as farmers use poor seed quality in production
secondly as it is stated that early generation seed farms are rain fed dependent thus the project will
establish irrigation infrastructure that will allow seed multiplication to be done twice a year , the
irrigation facilities will improve production of pre basic cotton seeds from 10 tons (2022)to 40 tons
enough to produce 1920tons of basic seeds by 2025

and also the project will enhance treatment of seeds before planting in oder to protect them from
pathogeny and early insect pests hence alleviating the problem of pests to farmers

acquisition of simple processing machines(second Product) to improve seeds and cotton by product as
it was stated that most of the farmers use hand hoes and local tools thus by using machines it enhances
production activities and simplifying farming

cotton and associated food crops in multiple cropping system improved (second result of the project )
so as to attain this result the( first product) is cotton compatible multiple cropping system where by this
will involve multiple cropping system of cotton and associated crops such as oranges ., multiple cropping
system result to crop diversification that improves food nutrition security where as as stated in the
country nutrition context that improving food nutrition is one of the goverments aim thus aids the
government in improving nutrition . but also it reduces risk of crop failure

strengthed promoted nutrition security and disseminated commercialization startegies of associated

food crops for creating healthy eating habbits (third result).the first product of the result to be attained
is supporting food diversification and utilization program through use of bio-fortified crops of local
foods and the introduction of nutritious food crops where as it develops food nutrition where as the
project will enhance to build capacity to farmers on access to adequate quality food
