Assessment Description
You are to draft a 2000-word report entitled BIM and Data Management in the AEC Industry:
Collaboration, Legal Implications, and BIM Standards.

Objective:

This assignment aims to develop the students' understanding of Building Information Modelling
(BIM) by focusing on three key aspects: collaboration, legal implications of data sharing, and the
application of AEC (UK) BIM Standards in design creation. Students are expected to critically evaluate
the importance of collaboration, comprehend the legal complexities associated with BIM data
sharing, and analyse how AEC (UK) BIM Standards influence design processes.

Below is a suggested structure for your report.

Structure:

1. Introduction (Approx. 200 words):

 Introduce the significance of BIM in the AEC industry.

 Clearly state the objectives: evaluating collaboration importance, understanding legal
implications, and applying AEC (UK) BIM Standards.

2. Collaboration in BIM (Approx. 500 words):

 Define collaboration in BIM and discuss its relevance.

 Explore examples demonstrating successful collaborative BIM projects.
 Analyse challenges and benefits associated with collaborative BIM practices.

3. Legal Implications of Data Sharing in BIM (Approx. 600 words):

 Examine the legal aspects surrounding BIM data sharing.

 Discuss intellectual property issues, ownership of BIM models, and contractual
considerations.
 Evaluate risks and liabilities associated with data sharing in collaborative BIM projects.

4. AEC (UK) BIM Standards (Approx. 500 words):

 Introduce AEC (UK) BIM Standards and their significance.

 Analyse specific BIM standards set by AEC (UK) and their impact on design creation.
 Discuss the influence of adhering to standards on project efficiency and interoperability.

5. Conclusion (Approx. 200 words):

 Summarize key findings and insights from the critical evaluation.

 Emphasize the overall significance of collaboration, legal considerations, and BIM standards
in the AEC industry.

6. References:

 Students should utilise a variety of academic sources, including books, journal articles, and
reputable online resources.

Submission Details
Please submit through the Turnitin submission link under the module assessment tab on Blackboard.
Please ensure the piece is word processed and saved as an accessible file type.

What happens next?

Your marked assessment should be available 20 working days after submission. However, please be
advised that this may be subject to change in the event of Bank Holidays, University Closure, or staff
sickness. If there is something about the feedback you have been given that you are unclear about,
please see your module tutor.

Feedback Method
Individual written feedback (comments on the work) and feed forward (how you can adopt good
practices in future assessments) will be provided. This can be found under the assignments tab on
the relevant blackboard page.

Late Submission
The University has a late submission policy of 5 working days for all coursework. All work handed in
after the submission date and within 5 working days will be capped at 40%. A mark of zero will be
awarded if the assignment is submitted after the late submission date unless extenuating
circumstances are applied for and accepted.

Retrieval in the Event of Failure

If in the event, that you fail this piece of course work, you will have an opportunity to re-sit the work
during the summer resit period, if required, or you may be eligible for in year retrieval. Speak to you
tutor regarding your options.

Note: This module is bonded. This means that if you achieve a minimum mark of 30% in each
assessment element, a module pass mark will be awarded based on an overall average of all
submitted assessments.
