CHAPTER 1
The problem and its background

Introduction
The global issue regarding feeding programs and the health of students is the
impact of nutrition on their overall well-being and academic performance.
Adequate nutrition is crucial for students as it directly affects their physical and
cognitive development. Insufficient access to nutritious meals can lead to
malnutrition, which can impair growth, weaken the immune system, and hinder
cognitive abilities. This can result in poor academic performance, decreased
concentration, and increased absenteeism

.Nutrient and health problems are no longer new in the Philippines especially
among children in elementary and secondary schools both public and private.
Both government and non-government organizations launched several feeding
programs that can help reduce the malnutrition and nutrient deficiency among
students. The government launched feeding program to selected public schools
around the country, they call it School Based Feeding Program also known as
SBFP. A feeding program in schools is a targeted initiative designed to provide
nutritious meals to students during the school day. It aims to address the issue of
food insecurity among students, ensuring that they have access to adequate
nutrition for their physical and cognitive development. Because of this, the
researchers resorted to this action research to prove that School Based Feeding
Program has an impact on the academic performance of the beneficiaries in our
school

In Banyaga it can be noticed that there is a large number of children who are
underweight or called malnourished so the researchers will be conducted this
study to provide food to individuals or communities who are experiencing
hunger or food insecurity. These programs aim to ensure that people have access
to an adequate and nutritious food supply to meet their basic needs

national high school

theoretical framework
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory, food is considered a basic physiological need and
higher-ordered needs can only be achieved if the basic needs are met. In the education context, for
learners to concentrate on learning and for educational institutions to achieve high-quality learning,
learners’ physiological needs i.e. food and water must be met before delivering teaching and learning
activities. Therefore, different countries introduced ‘Food for Education’ in a form of ‘School
Feeding Programme’ and ‘Food For schooling Programme’ to achieve quality education and to
redistribute food to poor families.

I can relate this theory by acknowledging the importance of meeting basic physiological needs, such
as food, in the context of education. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory suggests that individuals
must have their basic needs fulfilled before they can focus on higher-order needs, such as learning
and personal growth.
In the education context, it is recognized that learners' physiological needs, including access to food
and water, must be met for effective teaching and learning to take place. When students are hungry or
malnourished, it becomes difficult for them to concentrate, engage in learning activities, and achieve
their full potential academically.
To address this issue, many countries have implemented "Food for Education" programs, such as
School Feeding Programs and Food for Schooling Programs. These initiatives aim to provide
nutritious meals to students, ensuring that their basic physiological needs are met. By doing so, these
programs not only support the health and well-being of students but also contribute to achieving
quality education. Additionally, in some cases, these programs also help redistribute food to poor
families, further addressing food insecurity and promoting equity in access to education
Significance of the study
The study on "Project BMI: Breakfast Muna to Boost Your Immunity" holds significant importance
for the students of Banyaga National High School. Here are some reasons why this study is valuable:

To the parents. Feeding programs aim to provide balanced and nutritious meals to their children
who may not have access to adequate food at home. By ensuring that their children receive regular
and healthy meals, parents can be assured that their children are getting the necessary nutrients for
growth and development. Proper nutrition is essential for children's physical and cognitive
development, immune system function, and overall well-being.
To the students. the feeding program offers several benefits to students. It ensures that students
receive proper nutrition, which is essential for their overall health and well-being. Improved nutrition
leads to enhanced academic performance, as it supports cognitive function and concentration.
Additionally, the feeding program addresses social and emotional needs by reducing stress levels and
fostering a sense of community among students. Overall, the feeding program plays a vital role in
supporting the holistic development of students.
To the future researcher. it can serve as a valuable source of data and information for conducting
research on nutrition, health, and related fields. By analyzing the data collected from the feeding
program, researchers can gain insights into the impact of different diets on individuals' health,
growth, and development. This information can be used to develop evidence-based guidelines and
recommendations for improving nutrition and addressing specific health concerns.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study is conducted to provide healthy balanced meal to students from Banyaga National High
School it also reduce vulnerability and boost family incomes, particularly in times of crisis. . This
study will explore the background of the participants. This study will only focus in addressing food
insecurity, improve nutritional education, and ultimately improve health outcomes students. The
number of participants will be limited for the study to be more manageable

Time and Place

This study will be conducted on SY: 2023-2024, at Banyaga National High School

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES
This chapter deals with the research design, respondents of the study, data gathering
instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data

RESEARCH DESIGN

Qualitative research is used to understand how people experience the world. While there are many
approaches to qualitative research, they tend to be flexible and focus on retaining rich meaning when
interpreting data. According to Pritha Bhandari (2020) qualitative research is commonly used in the
humanities and social sciences, in subjects such as anthropology, sociology, education, health sciences,
history, etc. Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video,
or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights
into a problem or generate new ideas for research. Qualitative research is aimed at gaining a deep
understanding of a specific organization or event, rather a than surface description of a large sample of a
population. It aims to provide an explicit rendering of the structure, order, and broad patterns found
among a group of participants from Banyaga National Highschool

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The participants of the study are the selected grade 10 students in Banyaga National High School who
are underweight students. The purposive sampling will be used to select the participants

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers use different data gathering method which is an interview and the questionnaire.
Through interview the researchers will be able to have ideas about the poor health or underweight. The
interview contained three open-ended question that will allow the respondents to express their
thoughts on the question given

DATA GATHERINGS

The researchers will first send a letter to ask for the permission of the officer-in-charge,

adviser, and the parents of the participants to gather information and implement this study.

When the request is granted, the researchers will start to select the participants using the

purposive sampling. It is used to determine who the underweight students. After the selection of

the participants, the researcher will give the participants a questionnaire to gather the needed

information about them. The researchers will then explain the purpose of the study and this can

help the participants. After gathering the needed data, the researchers will consult a statistician
to get an advice on what statistical tool is needed to be used in interpreting the collected data

Sampling Technique

The population of the study comprises of Banyaga National High School students that are malnourish. It
is a non-probability sampling technique in which researchers use the data about the students to select a
specific group of participant that will help the study meet its goals. The researchers will choose the
participants purposely based on their characteristics which is underweight students. With this, the
researchers will be able to achieve the purpose of the study.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers diligently selected, sorted, and subsequently summarized the gathered data. To ensure
the reliability of the results, the data obtained from the survey undergoes a meticulous statistical
analysis process. This thorough examinations aims to validate the findings and enhance the credibility of
the research. The researcher will examine the following:

Frequency. This is used in determining the number of occurrences of a repeating outcome per unit of
time. It is the rate of occurrence of a specific event.

Weighted Mean. This is used in giving different weights in different data points. It will be used to
estimate the progress of the participants based on the weight of different assessment items.

Composite Mean. This is the mean of several means.
