discipline to ensure a learning-focused environment. PPST 2.6.2

To avoid and prevent misbehavior, house rules/ standards/guidelines are set

before the class starts or before doing an activity.

3. Is it from east to west or west to east?
4. Is it clockwise or counterclockwise?
5. How many hours is one complete rotation or one day?

(Refer to the Powerpoint presentation)

Designs selects, organizes, and uses diagnostic, formative, and summative

assessment strategies consistent with curriculum requirements . PPST 4.5.2

Diagnostic questions are raised for learners to diagnose if they have background
information about the topic of the day.

higher-order thinking skills. PPST 1.5.2

The questions presented to check pupils’ comprehension of pictures and video clips
presented are arranged from lower-level to higher-level thinking skills. Pupils are challenged
to think creatively.

Standards for viewing a video presentation

Manages learner behavior constructively by applying

positive and non-violent discipline to ensure a learning-
focused environment. PPST 2.6.2

To avoid and prevent misbehavior, house rules/

standards/guidelines are set before watching a video clip.

Follow-up questions about the video clip presented:

6. Can anybody locate the axis of the earth?
7. What is an axis?
8. What do you call the movement of the earth on its axis?
9. How long does it take for the earth to make one complete rotation?
10. What causes day and night?
B. During the Lesson

4. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

(Integration of Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Health, and HOTS)

To further pupils’ understanding of the concept and skills, lead them to

demonstrate how the earth’s rotation affects day and night through the use
of an improvised setup.
(Prepare the globe and the flashlight ahead of time.)

Say:
We have here a globe and a flashlight.
(unlock the word globe)
We need three volunteers to illustrate to us the following:

1. Show us the correct direction on how the earth rotates on its axis.
2. Explain what causes day and night.
3. What makes a day?
4. What makes night?

Ask further:
How many hours are there in one complete rotation or one day?
How many hours do you spend in school?
How many hours do you spend at home?
How many hours do you spend sleeping?
What is the right amount of sleeping hours children need to be
healthy?

Applies a range of teaching strategies that enhance learner achievement in

literacy and numeracy skills. PPST 1.5.2

Is it good to stay awake late at night? Why?

Why is sleeping the right number of hours important?

Applies knowledge of content within and across curriculum teaching areas. PPST 1.1.2

Health is integrated into the questions presented about the topic

Applies a range of teaching strategies to develop critical and creative thinking, as well as
higher-order thinking skills. PPST 1.5.2

The questions presented are arranged from lower-level to higher-level thinking skills.
Pupils are challenged to think creatively.

5. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

(Integration of positive & non-violent discipline and Differentiated/Tiered
Activity)

Group Activity-Directions:
1. Group yourselves into four.
2. Choose your leader.
3. The leader gets the activity sheets and the assessment card from the teacher.

4. Go to your respective area assigned to you.

5. Begin doing the activity following the group standards.
6. Be mindful of the rubrics presented.
7. Finish in ten minutes, and then present your output in less than 3 minutes.

Uses differentiated, developmentally appropriate learning experiences to address

learners’ gender, needs, strengths, interests, and experiences. PPST 3.1.2

The learners are given differentiated/tiered activities according to their strengths and
interests.

Standards for the simple Science activity.

Manages learner behavior constructively by applying positive and non-violent discipline

to ensure a learning-focused environment. PPST 2.6.2

To avoid and prevent misbehavior, house rules/ standards/guidelines are set before
doing the activity. Learners are given positive feedback after each group sharing

Rubric in Assessing Group Performance in Simple Science Activity (Group-

Assessment)

Directions: Assess your group’s performance in

accomplishing the task provided.
Descriptions Ratings
1. All member take part
in the group activity. 1 2 3 4 5
2. Members agree and
supports with each 1 2 3 4 5
other.

3 - Good 4- Very Good 5- Exemplary
Group 1- Explain the Cause of Day and Night
Directions: Fill in the blank with appropriate word to complete the
sentence.
The light comes from the sun.
The light shines on our planet Earth.
Every day the earth rotates/spins around its axis.
When the sun shines on us it is daytime.
When we face away from the sun it is nighttime.

Group 2- Show what part of the earth is daytime and nighttime.

Directions: Label and color the picture to show where it is day and
where it is night.

Group 3- Is it Day or Night (Using Venn Diagram)

Directions: Copy the name of each picture below in the proper place
in the Venn Diagram with the headings Day, Night and Both

Day Night

Sun Butterfly Stars Moon Rainbow

Clouds Rain Lightning Bat Fireworks
6. Developing mastery
(Integration of Contextualization, Localization, and Gender-Fair)

Group Presentation/Reporting
(Learners are given utmost recognition in the task they are presented.)

Self-Assessment of the Group Activity

(Each group presents their group output rating by presenting their Self-Assessment
Card.)
(refer to PowerPoint presentation)

Applies knowledge of content within and across curriculum teaching areas. PPST 1.1.2

Contextualization, localization, and gender fairness are properly observed in the manner of
grouping, and in the choice of instructional materials. Through the accomplished simple
activities, pupils relate the rotation of the earth to the varied activities of people during the
day and night.

7. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Integration of HOTS, Predicting Outcomes & Identifying Cause & Effect relationship)

Ask:
1. What might happen if the earth does not rotate?
2. What effects might it bring to the earth itself, to the people and other living
organisms on it, to the temperature, etc.

Applies a range of teaching strategies to develop critical and creative thinking, as well
as higher-order thinking skills. PPST 1.5.2

The questions presented challenge the pupils to think critically.

Applies knowledge of content within and across curriculum teaching areas. PPST 1.1.2

Integration across learning areas like predicting outcomes and identifying cause and effect
are observed effectively

C. After the Lesson

8. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

Ask:
1. What is rotation?
2. What causes day and night?
3. Did you cooperate with your group in the activity?
4. Why is cooperation important in a group activity?

Designs, selects, organizes, and uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment
strategies consistent with curriculum requirements. PPST 4.5.2

Formative questions are raised to learners to diagnose how far they have
learned or if the objectives of the lesson are carried.
9. Evaluating Learning

Evaluation: Identifying true and false statements (1-5)

(refer to PowerPoint presentation)

Direction:
On a ¼ sheet of paper, write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if
it is wrong.

1. Rotation of the Earth causes night and day.

2. It takes one year or 365 & ¼ days for the Earth to rotate completely on its
axis.
3. Different parts of the Earth experience day and night because the Earth is
rotating on its axis.
4. When the sun shines on the part of the Earth, that part is nighttime.
5. The activities of people on the different parts of the Earth differ during
daytime and nighttime.

Designs, selects, organizes, and uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment
strategies consistent with curriculum requirements. PPST 4.5.2

The use of formative assessment consistent with curriculum requirements is followed to

interpret the result of the learners’ progress
