SLU-SSM Women’s Health Residency Scholarly Product Summary

Pelvic Health Educational Continuum


Brea Rhein, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT

The goal of this scholarly product was to optimize student preparedness and specialty program visibility
via streamlined educational opportunities that support student recruitment for clinical rotations,
residencies, and employment.

Undergraduate DPT Exposure


• Pelvic health specialty topics included in current framework of DPT undergraduate curriculum
to support early exposure and awareness of pelvic health specialty within physical therapy
Skills Practicum (PY1)
• 1x weekly clinical rotation without caseload requirements offer early observation and
engagement opportunities within the current clinical experience framework
• Supplemental syllabus to assist in student learning to new topics within pelvic health to
encourage increased active participation and hands-on learning
SLU Pro Bono Clinic (PY2, PY3)
• Initiated pelvic health physical therapy services within Saint Louis University’s Pro Bono Clinic
to improve community access and support SLU DPT students in a clinic setting
• Will require supplemental education such as educational modules or resources for students
to reference to promote student independence
MS IV Pelvic Health Content (PY3)
• Improved integration of pelvic health topics within DPT curriculum
Pelvic Health Seminar (PY3)
• Elective 1 credit hour course prior to final clinical rotations
Specialty Clinical Experiences
• Relationship with SLU and SSM includes pelvic health, sports, lymphedema, cancer
rehabilitation, and pediatrics with a guarantee of 50% specialty caseload
