religion, known for his work in comparative mythology and his book
"The Hero with a Thousand Faces," which examines the common
elements of myths from different cultures.
Campbell believed that myths and stories reveal universal patterns
of human behavior.
Campbell studied in Columbia University in NY, where he received
a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and a Master of Arts
degree in medieval literature the scientific researches about the
universalis exist since 19th century. After that he moved to Europe
where he took a lot for his researches
There he found the book Ulysses by James Joyce, which became
one of his favorite authors. Then, he met the definition of
"Monomyth" in the James Joyce's book and it became the main
purpose of creating here with a thousand faces. Monomyth says
that all the stories or, initially, myths have the same pattern. So, we
can see the same system, as the rite of initiation almost in each
culture and it became a strong base for literary works. So, it has
become the object of research by Joseph Campbell. But not only
Joyce inspired him.
NORTHROP FRYE
whose text we already commented should be mentioned. he is a
Canadian literary critic, shared common ground with Joseph
Campbell in their exploration of archetypal patterns and mythic
structures in literature. not be direct
GILBERT DURAND
is a French anthropologist and sociologist. there we can say almost
the same as we have mentioned about Frye. The shared interest in
universal archetypes and mythic structures between Durand and
Campbell suggests a broader intellectual kinship rather than a
direct influence on this specific work.
CARL JUNG
was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical
psychology. Jung is known for his concept of the collective
unconscious, which he believed contains universal symbolic
patterns and archetypes that are expressed in myths, dreams, and
cultural symbols. Does this remind you of anything? While they
had some similarities in their views, they also had some
differences. Campbell focused more on the universality of myths
and the hero's journey, while Jung emphasized the importance of
individual psychology and the archetypes of the collective
unconscious.
