Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Linear Dimensional stability (LDS) and surface detail reproduction (SDR)

of elastomeric impression materials play an important role in fixed prosthodontics.

Hence the aim of this study was to calculate the Dimensional stability and surface detail

reproduction of polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) and polyether (PE) elastomeric impression

material.

Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of chemical

disinfection on dimensional stability and surface detail reproduction of polyvinyl

siloxane (PVS) and polyether (PE) elastomeric impression material.

Materials and Methods: A stainless steel mold was made to fabricate the study

specimens for nonaqueous Polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) and Polyether (PE) elastic dental

impression materials. Single mix impression techniques with light body and Putty

consistency of polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) and polyether (PE) elastomeric impression

materials were used to prepare the test specimens. The specimens were immersed in

Glutaraldehyde (Cidex) 2.45%, Sodium hypochlorite (Hypo) 5.25% and Chitosan 1%

disinfectants for 15 min (T1), 6 hours (T2) and 12 hours (T3) immersion after which

dimensional stability and surface detail reproduction were recorded using digital Vernier

caliper and stereomicroscope respectively.

Results: Intragroup comparisons within each material over the three time points were

done. For PVS, the F-statistic was 280.1 with p<0.001, indicating a significant difference

across time points. Similarly, for Polyther, the F-statistic was 599.9 with p<0.001,

signifying a significant difference in dimensional stability over time. Surface detail

reproduction of Polyvinyl siloxane exhibited a mean score of 1.70 with an SD of 0.93,

while Polyether had a mean score of 2.02 with an SD of 0.81 and the associated p-value
Abstract

was 0.018, indicating a statistically significant distinction in scores between PVS and

Polyether materials.

Conclusion: Polyvinyl siloxane impressions display acceptable linear dimensional

stability (LDS) for clinical use with immersion disinfection. Although some statistically

significant differences in surface detail reproduction were observed among Polyvinyl

siloxane and Polyether, but the clinical impact of these differences is minor considering

the overall accuracy of impressions which was high.
