Science
Choosing a research topic
● Previous shadowing experience
● Wanted more knowledge on how
phototherapy treats jaundice
Shadowing
experience
Who
Who, where, why ● Shadowed three different days, different
nurses each day

Where
● Prairie Lakes Hospital (OB),

Learned lots of information
Thought it was cool how I got to be in

All 3 days the patient’s room

information about what was
happening
● Liked how it’s active, you’re always
doing something

Research
Research
● “Phototherapy: The Most Effective
Way to Treat Jaundice in Infants”

paper
Research REsearch question
● What is the most effective way to

Paper cont. treat jaundice in infants?

Thesis
● Overall, the most effective way to
treat jaundice in infants is by the
use of bilirubin lights, also known
as phototherapy.
Research
● Major claims:

○ Doctor’s recommend phototherapy to reduce jaundice

by revealing the baby's skin to direct UV light.

Paper Cont. ○ Prolonged experience with phototherapy shows safe,

intended results.
○ Phototherapy is the safest, most effective approach for
lowering/clearing out bilirubin levels from a baby’s
system.

● Major piece of Evidence:

○ National Library of Medicine states that,

“Phototherapy is now the preferred method of
treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia by
virtue of its noninvasive nature and its
relative freedom from major complications.”
Research
● Call to Action:

○ By choosing phototherapy as your source of

Paper Cont.
treatment for your newborn who was
diagnosed with treatment, you're ultimately
picking the best option for your infant for
many reasons.

○ Communication
■ Allows all healthcare
“IF YOU DIDN’T providers assisting this
patient up to date with how
CHART IT, YOU the patient is doing, when
DIDN’T DO IT.” he/she last took medication,

Presentation Background of patient #1

Of product
Melissa Hanson is a 31-year-old who was admitted to the
hospital and ended up delivering a 9 lb 10 oz female via
forceps. Melissa had a 20-hour-long labor augmented

cont. with Pitocin as well as epidural anesthesia. After Melissa

gave birth, she experienced postpartum hemorrhaging.
She was administered the following medications to help
with several issues; ibuprofen, acetaminophen, pitocin,
cytotec, and methergine. The only diagnostic study
Melissa will need to have performed is to have a CBC 24
hours postpartum. Reading further into Melissa’s patient
care plan on the following pages will explain more of
what she is experiencing and what outcome we expect to
see.

Of product
Beth Simmons is a 24-year-old who was admitted in active labor
with a spontaneous rupture of membranes reported by the patient
for clear, odorless fluid. Beth got the epidural which provided

cont.
excellent pain relief as well as a catheter. As time went on, SVE
(sterile cervical exam) remained unchanged and the decision to
deliver by cesarean was discussed related to the failure of
progress. Beth consented to a c-section and then delivered a 10
lb 2 oz male. Beth was administered hemabate, morphine
sulfate, Tylenol, and Toradol to help with any pain. Beth will
have two diagnostic tests done: CBC (to check for blood loss
and infection) and Electrolytes (to check for imbalance).
Reading further into Beth’s patient care plan on the following
pages will explain more of what she is experiencing.
