5. The preimage and image of WXYZ are shown. Use coordinate notation to describe the translation.

SOLUTION:
Point X is located at (−1, 1). Point X′ is located at (1, −4).
(x, y) → (x + a, y + b) Write the coordinate notation.
(−1, 1) → (−1 + a, 1 + b) Replace x and y with the coordinates of Point X.

Because Point X′ has coordinates of (1, −4). Write two equations to find the values of a and b.
−1 + a = 1 1 + b = −4 Write equations to solve for a and b.
a=2 b = −5 Solve.

So, the translation described using coordinate notation is (x, y) → (x + 2, y − 5).

ANSWER:
(x, y) → (x + 2, y − 5)

6. Open Response Triangle JKL has vertices J(−2, 2), K(−3, −4), and L(1, −2). Write the coordinate notation for a
translation of 8 units right and 1 unit up.
SOLUTION:
8 units right = +8
1 unit up = +1

(x, y) → (x + 8, y + 1)

ANSWER:
(x, y) → (x + 8, y + 1)

7. Jabari is walking to the park from school. The school is located on the map shown. He walks 2 units west and 4
units south to stop at a store to buy a snack. He then walks 6 units west and 4 units south to get to the park. If
Jabari were to walk in a straight path from the school to the park, what would be the distance? Round the answer
to the nearest tenth.

SOLUTION:
Use the movements to find the location of the park.
From school move 2 units west (left) and 4 units south (down).
school: (8, 8) → (8 −2, 8 − 4) = (6, 4)
From (6, 4) move 6 units west (left) and 4 units south (down)
park: (6, 4) → (6 − 6, 4 − 4) = (0, 0)

From the school to the park draw a right triangle. Find the length of the hypotenuse.

a2 + b2 = c2 Pythagorean Theorem
82 + 82 = c2 Replace a with 8 and b with 8.
120 = c2 Add.
± =c Definition of square root
±11.3 ≈ c Use a calculator.

The distance from the school to the park is approximately 11.3 units.

8. Andaya is riding her bike to her friend’s house from swim practice. The pool where she swam is located on the
map shown. She rides her bike 5 units east and 3 units north to stop at her house. She then continues riding her
bike 1 unit west and 2 units north to get to her friend’s house. If Andaya were to ride her bike in a straight path
from the pool to her friend’s house, what would be the distance? Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

SOLUTION:
Use the movements to find the location of her friend’s house.
From the pool move 5 units east (right) and 3 units north (up).
school: (1, 2) → (1 + 5, 2 + 3) = (6, 5)
From (6, 5) move 1 unit west (left) and 2 units north (up).

9. Reason Inductively A figure is translated by (x, y) → (x + 3, y − 4) then by (x, y) → (x − 3, y + 4). Without

graphing, how do you know the final position of the figure? Write an argument that can be used to defend your
solution.
SOLUTION:
Sample answer: The figure is in the same position as the original figure. Since 3 and −3 are opposites, and −4 and
4 are opposites, the translations cancel each other.

11. A classmate states that a two-dimensional figure could have each of its vertices translated in different ways and it
would still be considered a translation. Explain to your classmate why this is incorrect.
SOLUTION:
Sample answer: For the figure to be translated, every point or vertex must move the same distance and in the same
direction. Therefore, the vertices cannot move different distances or different directions.
