Resistance  
The  image  reflects  my  childhood  experience  in  a  repressive  oral  classroom  
when  I  was  a  young  child.    During  one  of  those  oral  speech  sessions  with  my  
Deaf  classmates,  we  were  assigned  to  sit  at  the  table  with  an  oral  teacher  
ƐŝƚƚŝŶŐŝŶĨƌŽŶƚŽĨƵƐ͘dŽŵLJŽƌĂůƚĞĂĐŚĞƌ͛ƐĚŝƐŵĂLJ͕/ŬĞƉƚŽŶƵƐŝŶŐŵLJŶĂƚƵƌĂů
homemade  hand  signs,  which  were  banned,  to  communicate  with  my  class-­‐
mates.  My  teacher  disciplined  me  by  taping  one  of  my  hands  to  the  table  to  
prevent  me  from  using  my  hand  signs  with  my  classmate  and  leaving  my  
other  hand  free  so  she  can  use  my  free  hand  to  feel  her  voice  box  when  she  
was  teaching  me  speech.    I  was  born  with  natural  instinct  to  use  my  hands  
and  eyes  to  communicate  so  I  kept  on  resisting  her  demand  and  continued  
to  use  my  free  hand  to  communicate  with  my  classmates.  At  last,  she  taped  
my  free  hand  to  the  table.    I  kept  getting  in  trouble  with  oral  teacher  a  lot  
until  I  went  to  another  school  that  used  sign  language.

to  symbolize  my  natural  instinct  to  be  a  person  of  eyes  and  hands.    One  of  
my  hands  got  strapped  and  locked  on  the  table  but  I  continue  to  resist  oral  
speech  lesson  by  using  my  free  hand  with  a  hammer  to  smash  the  wind-­‐up  
oral  chattering  teeth  toy.    
 
This  is  a  message  saying  that  some  Deaf  children  today  are  still  trapped  in  
oral  classrooms  across  the  country  like  I  once  was.
