Topic Ecology
Learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
define ecology, habitat, ecosystem, biosphere and population
create artificial set up of various types of habitat
calculate the population density of a population
describe a community
Anticipation Learner can differentiate between living and non living things
Entry behaviour: The teacher begins the lesson by taking the learners for a walk around the school
environment. Learners are asked to note down their observations about the environment.
Step 1: Definitions
Ecology is defined as the study of the relationship between organisms and their effect on the various factors in their
environment.
The two main branches of ecology are autecology and synecology
Habitat is the natural dwelling place of an organism. There are three types of habitat;
terrestrial habitat
aquatic habitat
aboreal habitat
Ecosystem is defined as a self supporting unit which comprises of a living and a non living component.
Biosphere is the area where life exists on earth. Biosphere consist of the following;
Lithosphere
Hydrosphere
Atmosphere
A population is the total number of organism of the same species living within an area.
To calculate the population density, the total number of organisms of the same species living within a unit or calculated
mathematically as;
Population density =population size/area
A community refers to a group of living organisms of different species which live within an area.
