Course Description
This is the first course in a two-course sequence. It begins a conversation on self-management, offering opportunities for active
reflection on critical skill sets necessary for success in today's global market. We will build a foundation of entrepreneurial
knowledge and gain a competitive edge while becoming aware of your role in managing your own career.

Prerequisites or Corequisites
Prerequisite BA160 or Corequisite of BA163

#LIFEHAPPENS
Life happens to the best of us. It happens when we least expect it and even when we do expect it (it sometimes just gets worse)! We
rarely know when life is going to hit us but when it does, I hope you will know that I have your back (this term and from here on out),
I mean that.

I almost dropped out of college my first term and year. I grew up in a low income, single parent household where no one in my
family had attended college. It was a miracle that I graduated high school let alone got into college! I did not know a single person at
my college, moved out of state and had roughly $25 in my bank account (to get me through my first term). I called home every
weekend crying to my mom to let me transfer home. She made me stick it out a year, and I am glad I did. If it was not for my only
lifeline, Jodi, the only person I knew on my campus, my orientation leader, I may have never made it through that first year. She
reached out with a simple “how has your first week gone?” and I told her that it was going terribly. We had coffee, she made me
realize that I was not the only one struggling, and she helped me find an on-campus job (I needed more than $25 to get through a
term). Life happened to me, quickly. I jumped into college unprepared and unsupported, and emotionally I really struggled.

When life happens to you, I hope you will reach out. My first year of college is exactly why this job means so much to me. I want to
be the first person to listen to you, to hear your excitements and your anxieties and to help you figure out what your next steps may
be. If it is an extension on an assignment, a cup of coffee, a hug, or a place to vent about life – I promise I will be the first to listen
and I hope you will not go at anything alone. You just have to reach out.

Communication
Please post all course-related questions in the Q&A Discussion Forum so that the whole class may benefit from our conversation.

Course Policies
Yellowdig Participation

This course is offered through Oregon State University Extended Campus. For more information visit: 3
http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu.
This class will be using a program called Yellowdig to facilitate weekly conversations related to course content. Unlike a
traditional discussion board with weekly instructor prompts, Yellowdig is an online conversation platform where
students in the class guide the conversation. You receive points for participating in Yellowdig conversations weekly
throughout the term and the points you receive in Yellowdig factor into your final grade. Our Yellowdig Community will
thrive when we treat each other with respect and sensitivity. Your grade for Yellowdig may be reduced if you are not
following the community ground rules (found on Canvas).
Late Work Policy
Late assignments will not be accepted. Managing your time and meeting deadlines is an important part of the
professional work world. At the same time, life happens, so just as you will be asked to do in the work force, please
communicate with your instructor if you or your team is having a hard time finishing an assignment. It is your
responsibility to communicate with your instructor before the assignment is due.

Proctored Exams
This course will use an automated online proctoring system called Proctorio, where your exam session is recorded for
instructor review. You will not need to schedule proctoring appointments, and there is no cost to you to use Proctorio.

Please note that a functioning webcam and microphone are required for using Proctorio. If you do not have these, you
will need to locate and submit an alternative proctor through the exams and proctoring form and pay for any associated
proctoring fees. It is your responsibility to submit and complete this process following the rules and timelines set by OSU
Ecampus.

Your security and privacy are important. You can read more about Proctorio’s privacy and data security policies on their
website, and more information about using this tool can be found on the course site.

Makeup Exams
Makeup exams will only be scheduled in the case of documented military service, a documented illness/medical
condition, or religious observance. Typically, makeup exams involve more writing and are more essay-oriented. In
accordance with university policy, examinations may only be missed if notice is provided early enough in advance of the
event (i.e. not the due date) and/or proof of illness is promptly provided.

Expectations for Professional Communications

Formatting and visual presentation matter in everything that you do and is one of the major components of this course.
It is critical that the work you submit has a professional feel. These guidelines apply to emails, presentations, and class
assignments. Grades on assignments will be impacted by lack of professionalism or appropriate formatting.
• Typed
• Proofread
• Consistent in look and feel
• Clearly identified with your name
• Single-spaced paragraphs
• No indentation at the beginning of paragraphs
• Clean and crisp

Email Communications

This course is offered through Oregon State University Extended Campus. For more information visit: 4
http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu.
As stated above, it is expected that email correspondence is professional. Questions about assignments, canvas, the
class itinerary, or other class activities, should be directed to your class’s TA. Other questions, comments, or concerns
can be sent directly to your class instructor.

Professional Attire
During presentations, you will be asked to wear professional attire. Business Professional would be what you would
wear to a job interview; i.e. suits and ties.

Teamwork
During this course, you will work as a team with a variety of your classmates. In the workplace, employers expect
employees to work effectively in diverse team settings. In the best of worlds, working as a team can be difficult. Team
members have different learning styles, commitments, and dedication to learning. The upside is teamwork can be a very
rewarding experience in which the “sum is greater than the parts” and team members are exposed to new ways of
thinking and interacting.

Individually, team members should:

• Attend meetings
• Communicate clearly and regularly with team members
• Contribute (it is not enough to just show up)
Successful team members should:
• Fully participate
• Clearly define expectations as a team
• Communicate when there are issues or concerns

Peer-Performance and Self-Performance Review

Teamwork is an important part of this class. As such, it is important that you contribute fully to the team project in this
class. If you are having problems with a team member, please do your best to resolve the issue as a team first. If you
continue to have issues, please let your instructor know so they can try to help.

This term, you will have two opportunities to let your instructor know how you and your team members are or are not
engaging.

1. At the end of each assignment, each team member will identify what percentage of the assignment they completed
and/or supported. Your team in entirety will add these percentages up to 100% of the team assignment. These
percentages will be taken into consideration in addition to peer and self-evaluations (listed below). If by the third team
assignment of the term, you have not participated equally to your peers, you will begin to be graded on an individual
basis for team assignments based on your contribution.

Example: 3rd team assignment grade 16/20 points

team of 6 expected contribution: 16-17% (per team assignment)
Team Contribution on assignment: 8% or 50% of what is expected
Your grade: (16 * .50) = 8 points
Result: Grade drops from16 points to 8 points on prior team assignments.

This course is offered through Oregon State University Extended Campus. For more information visit: 5
http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu.
2. At the end of the term, you will have the chance to comment on the performance of fellow teammates and yourself
on various criteria. Performance reviews will affect individual grades on team assignments. Students scoring 80% or
higher will be awarded full points for team assignments. Scores lower than 80% will earn a percentage of their team
grade.

Example: Team grade: 207/230 points

Peer Assessment: 75/100 percent
Your grade: (207 * .75) = 155.25 points
Result: Grade drops from 207 points (90%) to 155.25 points (67.5%)

Statement Regarding Religious Accommodation

Oregon State University is required to provide reasonable accommodations for employees and students who hold
religious beliefs. It is incumbent on the student making the request to make the faculty member aware of the request as
soon as possible prior to the need for the accommodation. See the Religious Accommodation Process for Students.

Guidelines for a Productive and Effective Online Classroom

(Adapted from Dr. Susan Shaw, Oregon State University)
Students are expected to conduct themselves in the course (e.g., on discussion boards, email) in compliance with the
university’s regulations regarding civility. Civility is an essential ingredient for academic discourse. All communications
for this course should be conducted constructively, civilly, and respectfully. Differences in beliefs, opinions, and
approaches are to be expected. In all you say and do for this course, be professional. Please bring any communications
you believe violates this class policy to your instructor's attention.

Active interaction with peers and your instructor is essential to success in this online course, paying particular attention
to the following:
• Unless indicated otherwise, please complete the readings, and view other instructional materials for each
week before participating in the discussion board.
• Read your posts carefully before submitting them.
• Be respectful of others and their opinions, valuing diversity in backgrounds, abilities, and experiences.
• Challenging the ideas held by others is an integral aspect of critical thinking and the academic process.
Please word your responses carefully and recognize that others are expected to challenge your ideas. A
positive atmosphere of healthy debate is encouraged.

Commitment To Equity, Diversity, And Inclusion

I believe strongly that the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of students and the larger university community are a
strength and a benefit, both in class and in society. I strive to reflect and enact OSU's commitment to embracing equity,
diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of my teaching, research, service at OSU. You should be aware that some of the
materials we cover may be difficult to read and/or discuss, or may make you uncomfortable. As we examine this
material, it is essential that we are respectful to each other both online and face to face. Your suggestions for improving
this course are encouraged and appreciated, and I hope you will contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Each of us has a responsibility to work to create an environment free of harassment and discrimination. Please take

Expectations for Student Conduct

Student conduct is governed by the university’s policies, as explained in the Student Conduct Code
(https://beav.es/codeofconduct). Students are expected to conduct themselves in the course (e.g., on discussion boards,
email postings) in compliance with the university's regulations regarding civility.

Academic Integrity
Integrity is a character-driven commitment to honesty, doing what is right, and guiding others to do what is
right. Oregon State University Ecampus students and faculty have a responsibility to act with integrity in all of our
educational work, and that integrity enables this community of learners to interact in the spirit of trust, honesty, and
fairness across the globe.

Academic misconduct, or violations of academic integrity, can fall into seven broad areas, including cheating; plagiarism;
falsification; assisting; tampering; multiple submissions of work; and unauthorized recording and use.

It is important that you understand what student actions are defined as academic misconduct at Oregon State
University. The OSU Libraries offer a tutorial on academic misconduct, and you can also refer to the OSU Student Code
of Conduct and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standard’s website for more information. More
importantly, if you are unsure if something will violate our academic integrity policy, ask your professors, GTAs,
academic advisors, or academic integrity officers.

Use Of Artificial Intelligence

AI Integration by Assignment: In this course, students are required to integrate AI into some of the work of
the course. Make sure to review individual assignments to determine permissible uses. Unless otherwise
noted, you should be contributing original self-authored work for assignments in our course. Further
clarification on use of Artificial Intelligence in this class can be found on Canvas under the AI Use Policy.

College of Business Code of Honor

A code of honor represents the moral commitments of those abiding to it. While each person lives by his or her personal
code, the establishment of collective values creates a universal goal to which we can aspire. It is through the pursuit of
these professional attributes that we reduce the possibility of immoral actions ourselves.
In order to uphold our personal character and the organization that we proudly call our own, we take this oath.
Integrity
The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; integrity stands as the backbone of character
and is essential for success.
Respect
Respect for others and yourself is a commitment to the fair treatment of and the fair competition with others.
Through respect, we embolden the character of others and ourselves.

This course is offered through Oregon State University Extended Campus. For more information visit: 7

Responsibility
We are held accountable for our words and actions as professionals to embed a steadfast commitment to honor
in our decisions.

TurnItIn
Your instructor may ask you to submit one or more of your writings to Turnitin, a plagiarism prevention service. Your
assignment content will be checked for potential plagiarism against Internet sources, academic journal articles, and the
papers of other OSU students, for common or borrowed content. Turnitin generates a report that highlights any
potentially unoriginal text in your paper. The report may be submitted directly to your instructor, or your instructor may
elect to have you submit initial drafts through Turnitin, and you will receive the report allowing you the opportunity to
adjust and ensure that all source material has been properly cited. Papers you submit through Turnitin for this or any
class will be added to the OSU Turnitin database and may be checked against other OSU paper submissions. You will
retain all rights to your written work. For further information, visit Academic Integrity for Students: Turnitin – What is it?

During Fall, Winter, and Spring term, the online Student Evaluation of Teaching system opens to students the
Wednesday of week 8 and closes the Sunday before Finals Week. Students will receive notification, instructions and the
link through their ONID email. They may also log into the system via Online Services. Course evaluation results are
extremely important and used to help improve courses and the learning experience of future students. Responses are
anonymous (unless a student chooses to “sign” their comments, agreeing to relinquish anonymity) and unavailable to
instructors until after grades have been posted. The results of scaled questions and signed comments go to both the
instructor and their unit head/supervisor. Anonymous (unsigned) comments go to the instructor only.
