CHEM STANDARDIZATION OF UNKNOWN BASE

I. Standardization of unknown base.

1. Take about 25 mL HCl in a 150mL beaker.

Pipet a 10.00 mL sample of 0.300 M HCl into a 250mL Erlenmeyer flask.
Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator.

2. Take about 50 mL NaOH in a 250mL beaker.

Fill the buret with NaOH solution of unknown molarity. Be sure to fill the tip of the buret
before starting.

3. Add the NaOH solution to the flask of HCl. You should notice a localized pink color where
the NaOH solution is being added. Add the NaOH solution rapidly at first ( about 25 mL)
then slowly as the color begins to persist. When one drop of NaOH solution makes the pink
color stay you have reached the end point. Record the volume of NaOH solution used.

4. Repeat procedures 1 through 3 using a fresh aliquot (10.00 mL sample) of HCl. If you
overshoot the endpoint, do a 3rd titration.

II. Determination of concentration of acetic acid in commercial vinegar

1. Obtain about 15 mL of vinegar in the test tube .

2. Pipet 5.00 mL into your Erlenmeyer flask. Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator.

3. Fill the buret with the base that you standardized in part I. Be sure to fill the tip. Add the
NaOH solution the flask containing the vinegar. Swirl carefully. Titrate to a pale pink end
point as in part I. Record the volume of NaOH solution used.

4. Repeat the titration

5. Clean-up
