Surgery. He has authored more

DR SHIRIN LAKHANI
Dr Shirin Lakhani has an extensive
background in medicine, having
worked both in general practice
and in a hospital environment. She
is also a trained anaesthetist. In
2013 she founded Elite Aesthetics
in Kent. She also practices from the
renowned Cranley Clinic in London.
She has a specialist expertise
in intimate health and appears
regularly on television and in the
press as well as speaking at medical

Emma Davies has specialised

Dr Uliana Gout is the founder of
London Aesthetic Medicine Clinic
& LAM Academy. She is president

Medicine (BCAM) and sits on

Dr Raj Thethi graduated from Leeds
University Medical School in 2013,
having completed an additional BSc

in the Yorkshire Deanery he qualified

completed a Level 7 accredited

44% rise in botched cosmetic surgery abroad as travel restrictions lift

The number of patients being treated
for serious complications following
cosmetic surgery abroad rose by 44%
last year as travel restrictions began to
lift and consumers sought out cheap
deals.
A new audit by the British Association
of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS)
showed that the annual number rose by
44% in 2021 compared to the previous
year, a period when people were being
advised against elective surgery and
unnecessary travel.
In 2021, 75 women and seven men
were treated for complications,
which included some with life-
threatening problems such as the
need for emergency surgical removal
(debridement) of dead skin tissue and
admission to intensive care for life
support following systemic infection.

New study shows potential to make skin cells
act 30 years younger
Scientists have devised a new technique that has the potential to
make skin cells perform as if they were 30 years younger.
The researchers, from Babraham Institute in Cambridge, have
discovered a way to rejuvenate cells without changing their
identity, which could be used to treat skin conditions in the
future.
Diljeet Gill and his colleagues at the Babraham Institute have
developed a method that uses Yamanaka factors to rejuvenate
skin cells without losing their previous functionality.
Yamanaka factors were first developed in 2007 by Shinya
Yamanaka at Kyoto University in Japan.
The technique can transform adult skins cells into stem cells by
inserting four specialist molecules that reverse cell development.
In the 2007 study, it took around 50 days of exposure to
Yamanaka factors for normal cells to be reprogrammed into
induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). However, these iPSCs lost
the original cell type and its functionality.
In the new study, reported in eLife journal, Gill and his team
collected skin cell samples from three human donors that had an
average age of 50.
The cells were then exposed to Yamanaka factors for 13 days
to partially anti-age the cells. The Yamanaka factors were then
removed and the cells left to grow.
Gill and the Babraham Institute team found that the epigenetic
clock and transcriptome profiles of the partially reprogrammed
cells matched the profiles of skin cells that belonged to people
who were 30 years younger.
The rejuvenated cells also functioned like younger ones,
creating more collagen than those that didn’t undergo
reprogramming.

1064nm lasers prove most effective for

tattoo removal in study
In a pre-clinical study comparing four types of lasers for
tattoo removal, 1064nm came lasers out on top due to their
ability to recruit macrophages, the white blood cells that play
an essential role in pigment metabolism.
Tattoo models with black ink were treated with 1064nm
nanosecond, 1064nm picosecond, 755nm and 595nm lasers
for one session.
The study evaluated and analysed the clinical
photographic, melanin index and hematoxylin and
eosin (H&E) staining, and demonstrated that increased
macrophage recruitment plays an essential role in laser
tattoo removal.

New hospital opens in
Battersea
Real Clinic, a state-of-the-art hospital
and clinic, has opened in the heart of
Battersea, offering a range of surgical

Results from a programme run by Dr Matteo Tosato at the Gemelli Hospital involved the

Appeal launched to support
doctors in Sri Lanka
Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, owner of London-
based The Skin Clinic by Dr Mayoni, has
launched a fundraising appeal to support
her home country of Sri Lanka, which is in
financial and political trouble post-Covid.

call for help from a medical colleague in
Sri Lanka who had run out of ventilation

Faces Consent app partners with Payl8r for payments
Aesthetics app Faces Consent has signed a deal
with online finance firm Payl8r which will allow
Faces Consent users to buy stock and pay later.
Faces Consent was launched two and a half
years ago by entrepreneurs Ben O’Brien and
Ashley Simpson Davies (pictured) as an app to
house the consent forms for their own private
aesthetic clinic.
They soon realised the technology had
potential for use in other clinics and gave free
access to other aesthetic practitioners.
Faces Consent is now used to create client
consent forms and purchase pharmaceutical
products and has more than 45,000 registered
users, 90% of which are UK based.
While the app itself is free, Faces Consent has
a range of commercial partnerships which bring
in revenue.
It currently sees an average of £20,000 of pharmaceutical sales each day as practitioners
purchase products such as toxins and fillers directly within the app. This figure is likely to
increase and the Faces Consent team has plans to increase the product range.
Payl8r has now become the exclusive buy now pay later (BNPL) partner for Faces Consent in
a deal that is expected to bring in £24 million in revenue to Payl8r in the first nine to 12 months.
Samantha Fogerty, managing director at Payl8r said: “The app processes around 3,000
transactions every day and we’re delighted to offer their 45,000 users flexible finance to buy
now and pay later.”
Ben O’Brien, co-founder and managing director of Faces Consent, added: “We spent a lot of
time looking into building our own finance technology, but it soon became apparent it would
be easier to partner with an existing buy now pay later brand.”

Presentation: 50/100 units of Clostridium Botulinum Neurotoxin type A, free
from complexing proteins as a powder for solution for injection. Indications:
Temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe upper facial
lines (glabellar frown lines, crow’s feet lines, horizontal forehead lines) in adults
≥18 and <65 years when the severity of these lines has an important psychological
impact for the patient. Dosage and administration: For intramuscular use
only. Unit doses recommended for Bocouture are not interchangeable with
those for other preparations of botulinum toxin. BOCOUTURE should only
be administered by an appropriately qualified healthcare practitioner with
expertise in the treatment of the relevant indication and the use of the
required equipment, in accordance with national guidelines . The intervals
between treatments should not be shorter than 3 months. Reconstitute with
0.9% sodium chloride. Glabellar Frown Lines: Total recommended standard
dose is 20 units. 4 units into 5 injection sites (2 injections in each corrugator
muscle and 1 injection in the procerus muscle). May be increased to up to
30 units. Injections near the levator palpebrae superioris and into the cranial
portion of the orbicularis oculi should be avoided. Crow’s Feet lines: Total
recommended standard dosing is 12 units per side (overall total dose: 24
units); 4 units injected bilaterally into each of the 3 injection sites. Injections
too close to the Zygomaticus major muscle should be avoided to prevent lip
ptosis. Horizontal Forehead Lines: The recommended total dose range is 10
to 20 units; a total injection volume of 10 units to 20 units is injected into the
frontalis muscle in five horizontally aligned injection sites at least 2 cm above
the orbital rim. An injection volume of 2 units, 3 units or 4 units is applied per
injection point, respectively. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to the active
substance or to any of the excipients. Generalised disorders of muscle activity
(e.g. myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome). Infection or inflammation
at the proposed injection site. Special warnings and precautions: It should
be taken into consideration that horizontal forehead lines may not only be
dynamic, but may also result from the loss of dermal elasticity (e.g. associated
with ageing or photo damage). In this case, patients may not respond to
botulinum toxin products. Should not be injected into a blood vessel. Not
recommended for patients with a history of dysphagia and aspiration. Caution
in patients with botulinum toxin hypersensitivity, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
peripheral neuromuscular dysfunction, or in targeted muscles displaying
pronounced weakness or atrophy. Bocouture should be used with caution
in patients receiving therapy that could have an anticoagulant effect, or if
bleeding disorders of any type occur. Too frequent or too high dosing of
botulinum toxin type A may increase the risk of antibodies forming. Should
not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Should not be used

during breastfeeding. Interactions: Concomitant use with aminoglycosides or
spectinomycin requires special care. Peripheral muscle relaxants should be
used with caution. 4-aminoquinolines may reduce the effect. Undesirable
effects: Usually, undesirable effects are observed within the first week after
treatment and are temporary in nature. Undesirable effects independent of
indication include; application related undesirable effects (localised pain,
inflammation, swelling), class related undesirable effects (localised muscle
weakness, blepharoptosis), and toxin spread (very rare - exaggerated muscle
weakness, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia). Hypersensitivity reactions
have been reported with botulinum toxin products. Glabellar Frown Lines:
Common: headache, muscle disorders (elevation of eyebrow). Crow’s Feet
Lines: Common: eyelid oedema, dry eye, injection site haematoma. Upper
Facial Lines: Very common: headache. Common: hypoaesthesia, injection

best treatments are post-pregnancy
regnancy causes many
P changes in a woman’s body.
The growing foetus causes
mechanical changes by
stretching skin, muscle, and fascia. The
amount of physiological change during
pregnancy varies among women but often
persists long after the post-partum period
despite the best efforts of the patient
regarding exercise and diet.
Many women find it difficult to deal with
these major body changes. Humanoid
females are almost unique among species
in accumulating fat in the lower abdomen
midriff, while males seem more prone to
develop visceral fat around their organs.
During pregnancy human skin often
stretches out of shape and loses the ability
to spring back, forming sagging breasts and
stretch marks.
In this physiological state the dermal
tissue of the abdomen has been distended
and is sometimes left with long-term
stretch marks. Stretch marks occur
during pregnancy and are caused by rapid
stretching of the dermal tissue of the
abdomen during the distension and weight
gain of pregnancy. It is thought that nearly
85% of women will develop some degree
of stretch marks during their pregnancy
and these usually appear after prolonged
weakening of the dermal tissues about the
beginning of the third trimester.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Various treatments are available for
improving the appearance of existing stretch
marks, including radiofrequency, laser
treatments, microneedling, dermabrasion,
carboxytherapy and prescription retinoids.
Many patients ask if there are any topical
creams to help with stretch marks, either
during their formation or after they have
occurred. There are no proper control
studies, but some research suggests a daily
application of a cream containing Gotu Kola
extract, vitamin E, and collagen hydrolysates
are associated with fewer stretch marks
during pregnancy.
Carboxytherapy is a simple and proven
technique that can dramatically improve the
appearance of stretch marks by improving
local tissue metabolism and perfusion.
Treatments are rapid, comfortable, and
effective for a high percentage of patients.
Also great for treating stretch marks is BTL
Exilis Elite, which uses radiofrequency to
lightly heat the skin, encouraging collagen
production for cell replenishment. This
smooths out and contours the area,
tightening it in the process. It’s an extremely
safe procedure, with temperature control
based on the skin’s temperature. The
number of sessions will depend on the
severity of the stretch marks; however, four
sessions are usually required for the desired
effect.
DURING PREGNANCY
The safety of cosmetic procedures in
patients who are pregnant and/or lactating is
a complex clinical question surrounded by
uncertainty. It probably goes without saying
everyday hair washing, makeup, bathing and
showering are perfectly fine. The physician
involved in giving the treatment will usually
be well versed in whether the procedure is
safe or not. However, we shall look at some of
the aesthetic procedures in more detail.
Pregnant women should not raise their
core body temperature above 39 degrees
centigrade. This is considered the maximum
temperature one should reach to keep both
mother and baby healthy.
Lasers
Although laser hair removal is generally
considered a safe procedure, doctors and
dermatologists usually advise pregnant
women to avoid the procedure. Co2
laser resurfacing uses quite a lot of high
concentration lidocaine and should be
avoided during pregnancy.
Facials
Pregnant women should be careful about
using only natural products. They shouldn’t
use any chemicals (including retinoids)
directly on their skin as they may be
absorbed into the bloodstream, and the
developing baby depends on that blood. A
mother’s skin is more sensitive during the
stages of pregnancy.

Peels
With respect to chemical peels, glycolic and
lactic acid peels are deemed safe; however,
trichloroacetic and salicylic acid peels should
be avoided or used with caution. Again, retinol
can damage a developing baby. Though
it also resides in FDA category C, which
technically means risk to the foetus cannot
be ruled out, most physicians feel this family
of products is to be avoided at all costs.
Botox
Although safety data on botulinum toxin
A is insufficient, the procedure may be
safe because systemic absorption and
placental transfer are negligible. Because
there is insufficient data to be certain, most
dermatologists recommend avoiding Botox
injections while pregnant.
There have been many studies on
pregnant women who had Botox injected
when they did not realise they were pregnant,
and no untoward effects have been
reported. Botox has very little bioavailability
in the bloodstream, so it is unlikely to cause
a problem, but I would not recommend
injecting Botox into pregnant women.
Dermal Fillers
With safe beauty in mind, we typically
recommend that patients refrain from
injectables during pregnancy. While there
have been no proven side effects linked
to injectables, this is the safest course for
women who wish to protect their babies. We

Lidocaine
Pregnancy category B, considered relatively
safe to use during pregnancy at doses used
in dermatological procedures. However, I
refrain from using it during the first trimester.
Regarding general anaesthetics, it does
not appear that anaesthetic agents have
teratogenic effects in humans. However
anaesthesia and surgery during pregnancy
are associated with an increased risk of
miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight
infants and infant death.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy can be safe during pregnancy
but must be avoided during the first
trimester and after week 36 of the pregnancy.
Consider also the differing sclerosing agents
and question the physician.
Dental work
While pregnant,dental work such as cavity

fillings and crowns, should be treated to
reduce the chance of infection. If dental
work is done during pregnancy, the second
trimester is preferable. It is best to avoid
dental work while pregnant if possible and
avoid exposing the developing baby to any
risks, even if they are minimal.
Holistic treatments
Massage is beneficial to help a mother relax
and reduce stress. It will also help those
pregnancy aches and pains. Acupuncture
is also generally considered safe as are
manicures and pedicures.
Oxygen facials
These facials are considered safe and can
help increase blood circulation and plump
out any fine lines or wrinkles.
POST-PARTEM
The ‘post-baby’ body type with fat now
distributed subcutaneously especially in the
buttocks and thigh area. There are breast
volume changes with sagging, especially if
the female has breast fed her infant. Breast
volume may increase but usually we get
shrinkage. When one refers to the “Mummy
Makeover” what are the most typical kinds
of treatments related to this post childbirth
makeover? What are women most likely
looking to treat or enhance post birth?
Most of these makeovers are related to
the removal of fat. Liposuction has been
the mainstay of this quite recently. This is a

cosmetic surgery operation that removes
fat from the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks
and elsewhere. There are many differing
mechanisms of liposuction.
Conventional liposuction is mostly
performed under general anaesthesia, and
largely practised by plastic surgeons. The
whole procedure lasts two to three hours. It
is possible to remove large amounts of fat,
often eight to 10 litres, quickly in one to two
hours. However, it has many disadvantages,
including the fact that the patient must
be hospitalised, which adds significantly
to the cost. Recovery time is slow, as after
any procedure under general anaesthesia.
More recently, it can be combined with
other procedures (i.e. radiofrequency) that
involve a level of skin retraction. The result
is affected by the age of the patient, quality
of skin, presence of underlying disease or
smoking, and the presence of previous skin
damage such as those caused by childbirth
and surgery. The risks, financial costs, and
lengthy downtime associated with surgical
procedures for fat reduction have led to
the development of several non-invasive
techniques.
Non-invasive body contouring
Non-invasive body contouring now
represents the fastest growing area of
aesthetic medicine. There are currently four
leading non-invasive techniques for reducing
localised subcutaneous adipose tissue:
low-level laser therapy (LLLT), cryolipolysis,
radiofrequency (RF), and high-intensity
focused ultrasound (HIFU).
Cryolipolysis is the non-invasive cooling

of adipose tissue to induce lipolysis — the
breaking down of fat cells — to reduce body
fat without damage to other tissues. Cool

interest in non-surgical fat reduction for
other sites, such as the inner and outer
thighs.

orally for 12 weeks. At each visit at baseline
and for 12 weeks, skin features including
melanin index, wrinkles, and other relevant

Before delving into this, this article will
look at the known health benefits of restful
sleep in the supine position.
Sleep, which occupies 33% of the human
lifespan, is a complex physiological process
that regulates mental, emotional, and
physical performance. The quality of sleep
is strongly influenced by habitual sleeping
posture. Many studies have associated poor
sleep quality with adverse health outcomes
(e.g. cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
inflammation, neurocognitive dysfunction
and more).1
Scientists, doctors, and aestheticians
agree that the supine position is the best
posture to ensure restful, restorative sleep.
Mimicking the upright posture in everyday
life allows a neutral lordotic curve of the
neck, reducing the pressure on the spine.
Conversely, prone or lateral sleep forces the

way of sleeping. In adulthood, the supine
position is the least common sleep position.

Research has shown that REM sleep is
more easily achieved in the thermoneutral
zone, the optimum temperature that
provides the body’s thermal comfort.9
However, the body’s thermoregulation is
less active in restful conditions such as
sleep. Thus, the microclimate generated by
bedding and clothing determines the body’s
thermal comfort zone.
Compared with cotton or synthetic
materials, it has been found that sleeping on
or under wool rather than any other material
improves the quality and length of sleep at
high (29°C) or low (17°C) temperatures.10
Wool can maintain body temperature
consistently in all the sleep stages because
it self-regulates, creating an insulating layer
while drawing moisture away from the skin,
thereby helping the body to cool down
naturally.
Therefore, a wool pillow filling as the

enquiries sent to clinics by potential patients and examine
the correlation between response time and booking rate

booking. An important factor that contributes
to higher booking rates is the clinic’s response
time to a patient’s enquiry from any channel.
The challenge for your clinic is to respond
fast to enquiries and get ahead of your
competition.
We analysed 48,000 enquiries from
patients to medical aesthetic clinics in the UK
sent via WhatClinic.com and found a strong
correlation between the time to respond to
an enquiry and the probability of booking the
patient. In fact, not responding within one day
reduces the chances of booking by 42%. This
means that you may be losing almost half of
your potential clients by just not responding
as fast as patients expect you to.
To be better prepared to handle patient
enquiries, it is essential to know when to
expect them. Our data shows that clinics
receive the majority of enquiries during
the opening hours when practitioners are
carrying out treatments. If the clinic does
not employ a receptionist, the practitioner
should either interrupt the procedure or
delay responding. Enquiries are also sent
during after-hours. In this case, the speed
of response is crucial, as it is most likely
that the potential patient will contact other
clinics as well. If the practitioner does not
employ external help, such as InDesk, they
should decide on either handling enquiries
during their free time or risk losing a potential
booking.
What we also found in our data is that the
number of enquiries received on Saturdays
during the week. When it comes to telephone
calls, they are almost as frequent on
Saturdays as on weekdays.
When it comes to the number of enquiries
in relation to the day of the month, the figures
are significantly higher at the very beginning.
Probably, patients feel financially more
comfortable paying for their treatments at
the beginning of the month. With the higher
demand, it can be a challenge to cope with
all the calls and messages, and even a 1-day
delay in contacting the patient may lead to
losing 42% of your bookings.

disease, or injury and its
attempt to heal itself. Whether you’re
aware of it or not, this clever response is the
body’s way of keeping us safe from harm
and stimulating healing. Auto-immune
conditions, like arthritis, cause your immune
system to misinterpret threats and instead
attack healthy cells, leading to damage.
Acute inflammation relates to short-lived
immune responses. For example, a small cut
or dealing with a cold or virus. In these cases,
symptoms such as pain, redness, or swelling
usually subside in a matter of hours or days.
However, chronic inflammation typically
relates to a much longer time frame, i.e.
months or even years, and doesn’t always
end after the body has fully healed.
Long-term inflammation of this nature
can cause a wide range of symptoms,
including ongoing pain, weight issues (loss/
gain), mood disorders, digestive problems,
fatigue, and frequent infections. Serious
health conditions like cancer, heart disease,
diabetes, and Alzheimer’s have all been
linked to chronic inflammation, so reducing
inflammation in the body is extremely
important for longevity and maintaining
optimal health.1-2
Fortunately, chronic inflammation can
be managed and improved by your client
changing their lifestyle, and diet plays an
important role in this.
Following a Mediterranean-style diet
has been shown to reduce markers of
inflammation in the body.3 Although there
are many variations of the Mediterranean
diet, this way of eating generally focuses on
eating a variety of healthy plant foods and
lowering the intake of animal products, but
with a focus on fish and seafood. This type
of diet typically includes large amounts of
vegetables and fruits, as well as nuts, seeds,
legumes, and whole grains.
Moderate amounts of fish, seafood, and
poultry should be included, as well as small
amounts of dairy and eggs. Some red meat
may be included in very small amounts.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS
Turmeric, ginger Broccoli Green tea
and clove
Healthy fats from extra virgin olive oil,
avocados, and olives should be included in
abundance. The unsaturated fats found in
these foods are particularly beneficial for
lowering inflammation.
INFLAMMATORY FOODS
It’s also worth noting that certain foods
can be pro-inflammatory, and these sorts
of foods should be limited in the diet,
especially if your client is looking to reduce
chronic inflammation. Unsurprisingly, the
worst food-culprits for causing inflammation
are the same foods most of us already know
should not be a staple in our diets. These
include ultra-processed foods, refined
carbohydrates and sugars, deep-fried
foods, processed meats, sugar-sweetened
soft drinks, and anything containing trans/
hydrogenated fats.
EXERCISE
Exercise can have both anti and pro-
inflammatory effects on the body,
depending on duration, intensity, and
recovery time. Exercise stimulates the
body’s anti-inflammatory response by
activating the sympathetic nervous system-
which helps to increase the heart and
breathing rates and blood pressure.
Daily physical activity for just 20 minutes
of moderate intensity has been shown to
have anti-inflammatory effects.4 Moderate
exercise means the heart rate should be
within 100-120 beats per minute (BPM),
depending on fitness levels. Suppose the
client doesn’t wear a heart rate monitor.
In that case, the “talk test” can be a good
indicator of intensity levels - when exercising
at moderate intensity, they should be able
to talk comfortably but unable to sing a
tune.5

world of aesthetic medicine is increasing in
size, yet despite this growth, it remains small
and close-knit when it comes to human
interaction.
Medical professionals mix online
and in person, meeting at conferences,
training academies and socially. Company
representatives frequent many different
clinics each day, seeing and hearing what’s
going on at every site they visit and sharing
snippets and updates with others. PR
agencies and journalists announce the
latest developments in treatments, new KOL
positions, and industry news, having sourced
the relevant information from different
people. Awards ceremonies are bursting with
people networking, socialising and talking
about themselves and others.
This is a people-focused industry, and it
can work incredibly well for you if you manage
and protect your industry reputation.
Doors will open, opportunities will present
themselves, and your profile will elevate.
However, if you fail to protect your name, you
will, at best, limit your growth in aesthetics
and, at worst, damage your own reputation
and business.

bring to the aesthetic world and the relationships you build

in the use of QR codes. When scanned by

smartphones, those little matrix barcodes
will pull up a wealth of pre-programmed
information on a restaurant, website or brand.
It tells us what we need to know, showcases
the best bits and helps us decide whether it’s
something we want or need in our life.
Your industry reputation is very similar to
a QR code. Promote and market yourself as
the number one surgeon for abdominoplasty
or the best nurse injector for liquid facelifts.
As long as your work reflects this, the
information will serve as a concise bio or
‘business card’ to others as your professional
reputation.
An industry reputation offers others an
insight into who you are, what you do, your
character and your ethical and professional
standing in aesthetics. It can inform people
about your level of education and areas of
expertise but also tells them what you are
like as a person and whether you’re someone
worth getting to know or someone, they
should avoid connecting with.
It isn’t medical expertise alone that builds
an industry reputation. Industry reputation
is a combination of medical expertise and
character; how you interact with others, the
value you bring to the aesthetic world and
the relationships you build with companies,
suppliers, consultants and other satellite
service providers. It tells people whether
you have influence and could be an asset
to them. Industry reputation also informs
people if you are warm and fun-loving and go
out of your way to help others, freely sharing
your knowledge and experience.
Word will get around, and that will
positively affect your industry reputation.
If you help others connect, you’ll soon be
labelled as the go-to person for introductions
and networking. Your industry reputation
touches people you have yet to meet as
they get to know your name, face, and how
you fit into the aesthetics community. What
happens next? They verbalise this ‘QR code’
to others, and it can bring new exciting
opportunities your way.

will that necessarily open doors to new
opportunities? Will it allow you to grow your
profile, expand your business, make the right
connections and increase job satisfaction?
Possibly not. Here’s why.
Think back to those conferences where
you’ve been in the audience listening to
a Key Opinion Leader present on stage.
Why did they select that particular medical
professional to speak on this subject?
Perhaps you believe you have much more
knowledge and expertise than the speaker
or know someone else who would have been
able to provide much better content and
education than the person standing on stage
in front of you.
How did they manage to get this
opportunity? Quite simply, their industry
reputation (‘QR Code’) opened the door
for them. They have a relationship with
the company they are representing. The
company knows that this practitioner is
popular and can draw a crowd. The audience
always enjoys their presentations and
respects how they share business knowledge
or ways to improve clinical results. The
company that invited them to speak has
listened to the industry reputation, found
it to be positive, and given them the role of
KOL. It’s the same for people who contribute
to journals and magazines. Their industry
reputation goes before them. They are
known to be knowledgeable, imaginative and
great at writing.
What’s more, they can stick to a deadline
and can be relied upon to provide great
content. Why would a magazine editor
take a risk on someone who doesn’t have
an industry reputation as a great content
provider over choosing someone who is?
Your industry reputation can help with
business too. Perhaps you launched a
training academy, but you don’t seem to be
as busy as other academies despite offering
the same standard of training.Consider what
people are saying about you. Graduates will
talk about the support they received and
how approachable the tutors were, as well
as the content and education provided. If
you’re not being as helpful or engaging as

others, then why would they recommend
your academy to colleagues and friends?
Delegates want to know how approachable
you are, whether you’re skilled at teaching
techniques to others and even if you provide
a great lunch on the day. Small things add up
to a powerful industry reputation.
WHEN THINGS GO WRONG
Never underestimate how closely connected
people are. People talk! If you are rude or
dismissive to people thinking they aren’t
very important, word will spread and limit
future opportunities for you. Arrogance never
comes across well, so expecting to win an
award on name alone without taking the time
and effort to correctly fill out the application
shows a lack of respect for the process.
Writing or speaking opportunities are going
to be few and far between if you behave
unpredictably or controversially. If you are
late paying bills or owe people money, don’t
be surprised when businesses don’t want to
deal with you or staff turnover is high.
If your actions in public and online aren’t
aligned with your brand and how you want
others to view you, revisit what you are doing.
If you expect companies or colleagues to
pay for dinner or drinks every time you meet,
you’ll soon find yourself excluded from
future arrangements, which means you’ll
miss out on valuable networking. If you copy
people’s ideas, you may find yourself out in
the cold, excluded from business and social
events. If you cut corners, overcharge and
underdeliver on treatment results, don’t be
surprised to find your patient retention drops
and your clinic gets a bad reputation. Once
your industry reputation is damaged, it can
be very hard to fix as that ‘QR Code’ can also
share negative information about you.
HOW CAN I REPAIR MY REPUTATION?
It will take a concerted effort on your part to
repair any damage. Speak to someone you
trust and ask for honest feedback. What do
people think of you? What’s being said? Do
others view you as a professional or a party
animal? Form an action plan to address
any negative issues raised. You may need to
apologise for your behaviour or make some
adjustments to how you interact with others.
Restricting personal posts on your business
social media will reduce the risk of ‘off duty
you’ damaging your professional reputation.
Manners cost nothing, and respect can be
given to everyone you meet regardless of
their role in our industry. Consider getting an
experienced PR agency to ‘relaunch’ your
image to raise your profile in a positive way.
Reach out to others and ask for their advice
and support in helping you relaunch your
profile.
GROWING YOUR INDUSTRY REPUTATION
It’s far easier to protect a good reputation
than fire-fight a bad reputation, so make
sure you consider your actions and make
changes before any serious damage
happens. Decide what to make public and
what to keep private to limit damaging gossip
about you. Consider what you upload onto
social media. You can still be authentically
you but perhaps think twice before posting
something controversial. If in doubt, ask a
friend first. Our industry is a social one, so
you can still party, but do you really need
to get so wild AND document it? Once
someone screen-grabs a comment or photo
you posted, it can circulate rapidly and cause
damage, so think before you post. With a risk
of sounding like a grandmother, “It’s nice to
be nice”. Politeness costs nothing, so treat
the people in aesthetics the same no matter
what title or role they hold. What can you
genuinely do for others without expecting
something in return? Remember, people
recommend people they like, whether that’s
a patient recommending you to their friends
or a colleague putting your name forward for
a new role or award. It feels good to help and
support others, and developing this side of
you will benefit your industry QR code and
bring longevity to your aesthetics career.

treatments our clinic provides. Someone who

and therefore someone who is engaging,
knowledgeable and knows the importance
of the client journey. A therapist who will be
a great brand ambassador for the company
and contribute to the business’s profitability.
Someone who can start straight away and
would be flexible on working hours.”

RECRUITMENT
So why is it so hard to find this person?
Could it be that we are expecting to find all
the qualities we desire wrapped up in one
person? Once we find this person, there
needs to be alignment between their salary
expectations and the salary on offer. Working
hours need to be sustainable over a long
period, especially if it includes weekends and
evenings. It really needs to be a match from
both sides. Both parties need to feel lucky.
Relationships are about compromise,
and finding the right staff member will
involve compromise too. Decide what the
non-negotiables are and what you could
compromise on. Perhaps the therapist
is not trained in all the treatments the
clinic provides, or they can only commit to
working three or four days a week. Could you
compromise on these for someone who is a
great fit for your business?
A positive side effect of Covid-19 was
that we had to adapt. We had to do things
a bit different. We realised the importance
of relationships and what really mattered.
Bear these in mind when you recruit your
next staff member. Focus on the important
stuff like attitude, work ethic, integrity and
personality.

First and foremost, ask yourself if the
prospective staff member would be a good
cultural fit for the business and then go
from there. I was recently recruiting for my
own company, and it was down to a few
candidates. One was very sales orientated
combined with a relentless streak. You might
think great attributes for a recruitment
consultancy, but when I broke it down, we are
not a very salesy bunch. We are more about
building long term relationships and solving
problems where we value trust, integrity and
mutual respect. Think about your company’s
values and find an employee who will be a
natural fit and match.
HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FINDING THE
ONE?
When advertising the role, focus on why your
company would be a great place to work. Job
ads tend to be very one-sided, and often it’s
all about the candidate and what skills they
should have. Rather highlight how future
employees can benefit from being part of
your team.
Bear the “WIFM” acronym in mind.
“What’s in it for me” is what candidates ask
themselves when they are reading a job ad.
Put yourself in the employee’s shoes and
what benefits could be of value to someone
apart from their paycheque. Perhaps
ongoing learning opportunities to develop
their skill set or flexible working hours to
accommodate children, looking after parents
or support other responsibilities.

talent as they have created a culture where
people want to work. Company perks
include trading in holiday days and taking
sabbaticals to fulfil bucket list dreams.
Another client provides free childcare for
her staff on Saturdays. Think about what
perks you could offer your employees and
how you can use them as a tool to attract
and retain staff.
Being able to make good decisions and
choose the right team members when
recruiting will greatly impact the growth and
success of the business. Getting it right can
be challenging as we want the best possible
outcome based on the information we have.
Learn to trust your gut. It can help you make
difficult decisions or when you must choose
between two candidates.
When doing interviews, be yourself. We all
have our own unique styles. Some prefer a
more formal and structured interview. I have
found that when I put people at ease and
make them feel welcome, I get to know them
better during the interview. Try different ways
and see what works best. Ultimately, the
interview is about getting to know the person
and establishing if they will be a good fit for
the business. Be mindful of how you feel
straight after the interview. Did the candidate
leave you feeling energised and positive? If
not, they might not be the right fit for your
organisation.
I always ask candidates why they want to
leave their current role when I do interviews.
Based on their answers, here are seven ways

Worthy
Make staff feel valued and that their efforts
are appreciated. Empower them and let
them take ownership. Ask their option and
involve them in the decision making. On a
daily basis, your staff are on the front line
dealing with your clients. They have an
excellent sense of what your clients want or
how things can be improved to provide an
even better service. When employees don’t
feel valued, they will look for work elsewhere
where their talents are appreciated.
Autonomy
Don’t micromanage and let people do the
roles you pay them for. The lack of freedom
breeds frustration and leads to a lack of trust.
Steve Jobs sums it up when he said: “It
doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and
tell them what to do; we hire smart people so
they can tell us what to do.”
Transparency
Be transparent during the hiring process.
If the role is misrepresented, there will be
unrealistic expectations, and staff won’t
stay. Don’t make promises during the
interview that you cannot commit to. Provide
clarity around the package on offer so the
prospective staff member can make an
informed decision before accepting the job.
Share the mission and vision of the company
to ensure goals and values are aligned. When
values are aligned, there tends to be mutual
respect, and staff stay longer.

Development
Ensure that people don’t stagnate in their
roles but continue to grow and develop.
Instil in your staff a mindset of continuous
learning. Nelson Mandela said, “Education
is the most powerful weapon you can use to
change the world.” Constant improvement is
key, and you want your staff to progress and
evolve. This will contribute to the business’s
success and fulfilment of its people.
Support
The lack of support can lead to overwhelm,
underachievement and resignations. Focus
on people’s strengths and provide support
and encouragement. Assign a mentor to
new starters. This will nurture them and
help them thrive in their new position. The
right mentor will provide accountability and
assist the new staff member in integrating
seamlessly within the organisation. Don’t
underestimate the effect the mentee will
have on the mentor. The relationship will
mentor will benefit from personal growth,
which in turn has a positive impact on the
business and their longevity within the
organisation.
Fun
Think of all the jobs you’ve had since you
started your working career. Which one
did you enjoy the most? Chances are that
the job you have fond memories of is the
one where you worked with great people.
People stay longer in roles where there is
teamwork, camaraderie and an element of
fun. Create an environment that supports
this, as team spirit is an essential ingredient
for performance and success. As Andrew
Carnegie said, “There is little success where
there is little laughter.”
TO CONCLUDE
We all have different leadership styles and
how we communicate with people, but when
you are looking to recruit, remember this:
• Don’t miss out on great people because you
are too focussed on having every box ticked
• Be that leader who looks beyond the box
and recognises when someone is smart,
willing to do whatever it takes to succeed
in their role and has the right attitude and
mindset to serve your customers
• Be that person who takes a chance on
someone, especially when they remind you
of your younger self - someone who was
once at the start of their career and just
needed one person to believe in them. One
person to give them a break. One person to
pay it forward.
