The video tells about the space

Therefore, what do you think is our lesson

for today? Our lesson for today is about
area, Ma’am!
Excellent! Let’s give him a Kris Aquino
clap.

So today, I am going to discuss to you how

to find the area of triangles, parallelograms
and trapezoids using sq. cm and sq. m
D. Discussing new
concepts and practicing I have here three situations. Let us read
new skill and analyze each situation.
1. Karen has a botanical garden. The
garden is triangular in shape. The length of
the base is 6 meters and the height is 4
meters. She would like to cover the whole
area of the garden with carabao grass. How
many square meters of carabao grass are
needed?

What is the shape of the botanical garden?

What is asked in the problem? Triangular / triangle

The number of square meters of

carabao grass needed?
How can we find the area of the triangular
botanical garden? Do you have any idea?

h = 4m

b = 6m

A = ½ (b x h)
= ½ (6m x 4m)
= ½ (24m²)
A = 12 m²
Excellent!

The illustration below will help us find the

area of the garden. The botanical garden
has the shape of a triangle. The length of
its base is 6 m and its height is 4 m.
If we draw another triangle that is exactly
the same as the given triangle and arrange
these 2 triangles as shown in the figure, a
parallelogram is formed.

From the illustration, we see that the base

of the parallelogram is 6 m and its height
is 4 m. Height is also called as Altitude.
Thus, the area of the parallelogram is 24
sq. m or 24 ㎡. Since the triangle is ½ of
the parallelogram, the area of the triangle
is ½ of the area of the parallelogram. That
is, 24 ㎡ ÷ 2 = 12 ㎡.
So, the formula in finding the area of a
triangle is:
Area of a triangle = ½ (b x h) or A = b x h
2
where b = base of the triangle
h = height of the triangle

So how did we derive with the area of the

triangular botanical garden?
Who can do the solution in finding the area A = ½ (b x h)
of a triangle? = ½ (6m x 4m)
= ½ (24m²)
A = 12 ㎡
Great Job!
Let’s proceed to the next situation.

2. Diane and her group mates have a

parallelogram-shaped vegetable garden. It
has a base of 5 meters and a height of 3
meters. They planted it with pechay. She is
interested in finding the area of the
vegetable garden but she does not know
how to do it.
Let us help Diane find the area of the
parallelogram-shaped vegetable garden.
The vegetable garden has the shape of a
parallelogram. Its base (b) is 5 m and its
height (h) is 3 m.

A=bxh
=5mx3m
Therefore, the area of a parallelogram is = 15 ㎡
the product of its base and height.

Area of a Parallelogram = base (b) x 15 ㎡

height (h) or A = b x h

Now, who can show to the class the

formula in finding the area of the
parallelogram-shaped vegetable garden?

So, what is the area of the parallelogram-

shaped vegetable garden?

Now, let’s take a look into the third

situation.
3. Mr. Cruz cultivated a small garden lot in
the shape of a trapezoid. The bases are 3
meters and 6 meters, while the distance
between the two bases is 4 meters. What is
the area of the lot?

Trapezoid

Area of the trapezoidal garden

What is the shape of the garden lot?

What is asked in the problem?

To find the area of the garden lot, we need

to find the area of the trapezoid.
The lot has an upper base of 3 meters and a
lower base of 6 meters. Its height is 4
meters.

If we take another trapezoid that is exactly

the same as the first, we can form a
parallelogram as shown below.

We can say that the base of the

parallelogram is the sum of b1 and b2 of
the trapezoid. We can also say that the area
of the given trapezoid is ½ that of the
parallelogram.
The area of the parallelogram can be
solved using the formula:

A = ½ (b1 + b2) h or A = (b1 + b2) h

2
A = ½ ( 3m + 6m ) 4m Yes, Ma’am!
A = ½ (9m x 4m)
A = ½ (36 ㎡)
A = 18 ㎡

Therefore, the area of the trapezoidal

garden lot is 18 m2.

Do you know now how to find the area of

the given plane figures?
Very Good!

Okay, so before we proceed to our group

activity, may we read the formula in
finding the area of triangles, trapezoid, and
parallelogram.

Now, I will divide you into five groups.

Each group will have a grab leader. The
grab leader will come in front to get an
object they wanted to measure (Teacher
will give the real objects.) Then, find the
area of the object using the correct
formula. Assign a rapporteur to present
your output you will be given 5 minutes to
accomplish the task.

E. Developing Mastery So, for you to understand further the

process in finding the area of triangles,
parallelograms and trapezoids using sq. cm
and sq. m, let’s play Spin It, to Solve It!

All your names are listed in the roulette.

Five lucky pupils will be picked to solve
the given problem. After reading the
problem, you solve it on the board to see
whether you used the correct formula. In
case you do not know how to solve it, you
need to call a friend. Understood?

Are you excited? Yes, Ma’am!

Let’s Spin It, To Solve It! Yes, Ma’am!

Anaiah has a triangular piece of cloth. The A = ½ (b x h)

height of the triangle is 15 centimeters and = ½ (6 cm x 15 cm)
the triangle’s base is 6 centimeters. What = ½ (90 cm²)
is its area? A = 45 cm²

Keziah decided to make a triangular A = ½ (b x h)

garden. The base measures 5m while its = ½ (5 m x 10 m)
height measures 10m. What is the area of = ½ (50 m²)
her triangular garden? A = 25 m²

The bases of a trapezoid are 8 cm and 10 A = ½ (b1 + b2) h

cm. Its height is 2 cm. What is the area of = ½ (8 cm + 10 cm) 2 cm
the trapezoid?
= ½ (18 cm) 2 cm
= ½ (36 cm²)
A = 18 cm²

A residential lot in the shape of A=bxh

parallelogram has a base of 15 m and a = 15 m x 20 m
height of 20 m. What is its area? A = 300 m²
A park in the shape of parallelogram has a
base of 50 meters and a height of 35 A=bxh
meters. What is its area? = 50 m x 35 m
A = 1, 750 m²
Congratulations! You all did a great job!
F. Finding practical Do you have gardens at home? Answers may vary
applications of concepts & Do you love gardening?
skills in daily living What benefit can you get from gardening? Answers may vary

Let’s read a short story on how the

Rodriguez family spend their time
together.

The Rodriguez family spend most of their

time in vegetable gardening. This served
as their bonding time. Every afternoon,
each family member has an area to take
care. They weed their own area and they
water the vegetables planted on it. Aling
Maria is in charge of the triangular-shaped
part of the garden whose height is 9 meters
and a base of 12 meters. She planted this
part with pechay. Rohan and Ronan, the
twin brothers take care of the trapezoidal
part where they planted it with okra. This
part has a height of 5 meters, and its bases
are 7 meters and 9 meters. The
parallelogram-shaped part is planted with
eggplant. This part is being taken good
care by Mang Gil. Being the head of the
family, he has the largest part in their
garden. The height of his area is 15 meters
and a base of 25 meters.

Now, let’s help the Rodriguez family find

the area of the following:

A. Part of the garden where the pechay are

A. A = ½ (b x h)
planted
= ½ (12 m x 9 m)
= ½ (108 m²
A = 54 m ²
B. Part of the garden where the okras are
planted
B. A = ½ (b1 + b2) h
= ½ (7 m + 9 m) 5 m
= ½ (16 m) 5 m
= ½ (80 m²)
A = 40 m²
C. Part of the garden where eggplants are
Planted
C. A = b x h
= 25 m x 15 m
A = 375 m²
